I didn't know that folks were creating Formula fields to show related record fields ...I thought everybody knew that if you have lookup then you can access lookup object fields easily.
You are ahead of the game! There is so much to know in Salesforce world, features like this are often not learned. I have seen people doing this recently, I also was not aware of this feature in my early admin days. I learned about this feature at Dreamforce in 2013 and was so excited about it. People sometimes think it's easier to create a formula field than to create a custom report type and then recreate their report. Creating more fields takes up more data storage space in the end.
