How to make a custom upholstered armrest (Scorpion Crawler Project)

- You guys have asked a bunch of times for another upholstery video, so here you go: Watch as I build a custom console cover/armrest for Matt's Scorpion Crawler project. Matt asked me to make one that would match his new seats. Enjoy!

I wasn't sure how french seams worked prior to watching this video. I'm sure there were tutorials out there on just that. But it's much more entertaining to learn it when it involves an off road rig. Great video!

I've watched a lot of videos on this channel, but I must say this was one of the most informative I've ever seen. I had never really considered upholstery as a project that I was able to do and this made me think otherwise. Great video!

You made it look too easy. Im doing exactly the same thing but with laether material. Mine came out too tight on one side and bulging on another side. Lol not sure what i did wrong.
Great work but added layer of glue to mold while stapling would have been a nice touch

Nice job!! One question. Since you routed out the groove to push the edging down in, couldn't you do basically the same thing for the corners also?? Sure wish I had your skills...
yes, I would do that if I could do it over again. I planned on doing the corners differently in the beginning. Fabrication is never an exact science. As Matt likes to say, its a lot of problem solving. Good thinking on your part.
So it would work.. I thought maybe it would make the corners too weak or something.. I suppose a furniture grade plywood would be best though.. Best gluing and zero voids...

What staple gun are you using?
How much $$ for that job?
Isnt that a Felled (fallen) seam not a French seam? A french seam would have the seam ends inside a pocket of the seam allowance.
is that a jigs staple gun?? i cant use one of them because when i turn the gun around to pound staple stubbles down i always dump all the staples out i use senco at my work at good ole smith brothers furniture
It's actually a BEA 123 that I picked up from a pawn shop for $20. I had to replace the buffer but it's been the best staple gun I've ever used.
I was just watching and realized that you were turning on your compressor in the one shot. swap the switch out for one of those timer knobs that will make it so that you won't find your compressor running a week later
that was actually a shot of me turning the sewing machine off. Sorry for the confusion but you're right about the compressor!

Do you have a link to the base foam you used? I'm having a hard time selecting the foam for my project.
This was a scrap piece I salvaged from an archery target, but its called "EVA" foam. If you do an internet search, there's several places that sell it in various thicknesses.
Can you please tell me where to buy the foam in your video?

I guess you could say I apprenticed. I worked for a small upholstery shop all through highschool. He taught me the fundamentals and I went from there.
I don't lika jeep, i hate Trump, but the mix of your voice and the music was so relaxing, that it turned out that I subscribed to your channel.
Even with the volume all the way up , I can still barely hear you ..... Time to break out the headphones ... Can you use a regular sewing machine for something like this , or do you need one designed specifically for upholstery work ?
I have a kenmore from the 50s that I use for work like this.
You can use a regular sewing machine if you can get the stitches long enough and if it can handle the thread and material thickness. A good choice would be a Pfaff or Juki machine.
+Tyler Bleepinjeep I got an old singer peddle type my great grandma used to make seat covers for A models back in the 40s
+Nick Vandiver the book says use some kind of thread called cat gut but I was told it's like fishing line
wow! cat gut hasn't been used for decades. That's pretty cool. The thread you want to use is called "Bonded Polyester" and you'll want something in the TEX 90 size. You may also see DB92 as roughly the same size.

The racing seats that Matt put in the Scorpion have French seams on them and I wanted to match the seats to tie the interior all together. I'll show you guys how to sew a welt (piping) sometime down the road though.
