F is probably my favorite note... sounds so sad, but hopeful...
Among world flutes, there's the universal phenomenon, it seems, of the standard pitch instrument. With the Native American Style Flute, that medium or standard pitch is F#, and any flute that is higher than that pitch, even by a half step, which is G, sounds light and bright - qualities that are associated with hiighness of pitch. On the other side of the coin, flutes that are lower than the standard F#, even by a half step, which is F natural, as in this flute, sound dark, mellow and haunting, with such qualities being associated with lowness of pitch. The Japanese Shakuhachi, on the other hand, has a standard or medium pitch of the D above middle C, which, coincidentally, is the exact same fundamental note of the Irish Flute, half a world away. And so, if you take everything relative to the standard or medium pitch, the F natural Native American Style Flute, a half step below its medium or standard pitch, would correspond to the C# Kyuu Sun Kan of the Japanese Shakuhachi. Both instruments, the F natural NASF and the C# Kyuu Sun Kan Shakuhachi, have a slightly but decisively darker and more mournful tone to them, and both excell at playing solo, improvizational pieces with a lot of heartfelt feeling to them. In the Japanese Shakuhachi tradition, that would be the solo unaccompanied Zen inspired Honkyoku repertoire, which corresponds roughly to the type of improvizational solo that you just heard Jonny play in this video. IN other words, the standard Hassun Kan Shakuhachi in D is used to play traditional Japanese Sankyoku chamber music with the Koto and Shamisen, whereas the C# Kyuu Sun Kan is the favorite size or key for playing the solo Zen inspired Honkyoku pieces. Then, there is the Shinkyoku or "new pieces" repertoire, of which the most famous piece is undoubtedly Haru no Umi, or "The Ocean in Spring" by Michio Miyagi, which is usually played on a Roku Sun Kan in the key of E - just google it up on TH-cam - it will quickly become one of your favorite pieces of Japanese music!
Here's the basic rundown on the medium or standard keys for various world flutes, demonstrating the universality of the standard key phenomenon: NAtive American Style Flute = F#; European Recorder (1/2 world away) - F natural (pretty close). Japanese Shakuhachi = the D above middle C, Irish Flute (1/2 world away) - D above middle C (Pennywhistle on the D one octave higher). Romanian Pan Flute (Nai) = G above middle C; Andean Quena (1/2 world away) - same G above middle C. In addition, the overall tone quality of a Romanian Pan Flute and an Andean Quena are very similar. Amazing, isn't it???

A GREAT improvization, once again, Jonny! Ancient Territories? Yeah, I visited the guy once - he's out there in the desert of southern California, in Yucca Valley. It seems like that AT flute you're playing is made from Zebra Wood, which is one of AT's favorite woods - one of those pretty "eye candy" woods too. The unique V shaped design patterns, not just on the end caps, but in the main acoustical wood itself, come from AT's unique flute construction and gluing / lamination pattern - he glues his flutes in two halves left and right, not front and back.
Soooooo sickkkkkkk
that's a beauty
