Starting a drone business in the UK - visiting someone who's just done it

  • I get lots of questions about how to turn your drone hobby into a business. In the UK there's a well-defined process and rules, so it was interesting to speak to someone who's just been through the whole thing.
www.skyeyevideo.co.uk receieved its CAA Permission for Aerial Work in May this year, and I asked owner Barry Tindall about the process of getting qualified, getting permission and also shadowed him on a quick local job to see how it all works in practice.
You asked (I’ve no idea why) so now you can buy mugs! See bit.ly/buymugs

My "On the Kitchen Table" videos are mainly aimed at newcomers to multirotors, quadcopters, drones and UAVs, particularly to the DJI product range, and the Phantom line in particular. I have how to's, product reviews, tips, tricks, hints and information for beginners and those in the early stages of the hobby. I film "on the kitchen table" to show people that, like me, you don't need a workshop and an array of specialist equipment and years of experience to get started and progress with flying these amazing aircraft and enjoying making great aerial videos and stills. So if you have bought, or are thinking of buying, a DJI Phantom 3, Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision or Vision+ or Plus, Inspire 1 or even building your own DJI Flamewheel F450 or F550, or considering the Lily, 3DR Solo, Yuneec or more then you too can do it... on the kitchen table!

Thank you for that information. I'm trying to get my lidar company to be my passion and profession. As an historian and archaeologist it's incredible the things which can be achieved with this technology.

Great vlog I'm glad it shows that there is more to this industry than just flying around and having fun. Hopefully it will put off the people who are just looking to get a quick payday . And to survive in this industry you have to be by the book, I'll be training next year I want to do this part time to start and maybe work for a company .

Great video, thank you. I live in rural France and am currently looking in to starting a small drone business. I have just purchased my first drone (YUNEEC Q500+) and have started doing my research in to what I need to do before I can start operating. The rules differ slightly here but your video has given me a good insight in to how to begin. Thanks again.

Very interesting Simon great video. for over 2 years I've wanted to this for a living but I've not been in position to take the plunge, but after seeing all that's involved, it takes all the fun out of it for me..I think doing it as a hobby is much more fun...

I've been getting into multirotors recently with the aim of getting some nice pictures and videos. I fairly quickly realised making money from it won't be possible without serious investment to the point its almost a full time business, and this video just hammers it home a little more. Having said that, for non-commercial use the rules are surprisingly reasonable and I hope people still get into the hobby even without the thought of making their money back because it is good fun.

Very useful as I am seriously considering such a business venture, thank you to both Barry and SimonWhilst I fully understand the need for rules and regulations for such activities, it clearly appears the bureaucracy is somewhat over the top for a business ventureGood luck Barry...

Very interesting. I'm part way through the PFAW qualification process having done the theory part, now on to the Ops Manual. My experience was that the training was bringing the disciplines associated with manned flight into unmanned flight, particularly around safety and risk management.

An excellent and informative video. It appears to be very similar to the system in operation in the Netherlands. Although there is talk of UAVs under 4 kg being exempt, lets see. I'm also a helicopter pilot which makes the process less onerous. Cracking job Barry, I wish you every success.

Simon , yet again a very helpful and useful video, i have an idea for a niche commercial use, but i'm not sure if it is commercial viable, more research needed

Hello Simon. Great video! The CAA have significantly improved processing times - I submitted my documents on 18 June and received my PFAW on 6 July - less than three weeks!
