One of the overlooked gems of the guitar world. Been listening to Uli since the 70's not that I play like him but definitely an influence. Every little lick or phrase is melodic so pleasing to the ear like a breath of fresh air.
Been a Uli fan since late 70’s, saw him a couple of times in early 80’s,. Uli has just toured UK , caught gig at Cardiff, superb. Great band and they’re heading to the USA in 2024
Huge Uli and Scorpions fan. Taken By Force is probably the studio Scorpions album I listened to the most during the 80s. Most of my guitar buddies thought he was too esoteric or too far out there but some of that stuff was amazing. I also feel quite a bit of his rhythmic stuff and even some of his lower register lead bits can be slowed down to one third or one quarter speed and pass as an inspiration to some of the doom guys like Trouble and esp Candlemass, at least circa 1984 - 1988. So much goodness in there.
Ritchie and Uli are the first true shredders. They showed the rock world that there is so much more to it than just pentatonic scales. Another awesome lesson Dave!
@@knightfall9394 Yes, but his solos on Mistreated, Death alley driver, Gates of Babylon utilize Aeolian, Harmonic minor and Phrygian dominant scales, furthermore he made use of Dorian, Mixolydian and even Hungarian minor sometimes.
@@knightfall9394 quite an ignorant comment considering all the internet sources you have at your dispersal for educating yourself on a little more of blackmore's works

his brother is a great player as well,Zeno Roth, sadly he passed away in 2018,but the music will live on with us.very good lesson David, thank you for the time you put in to creating these great lessons that you provide for us,keep rocking brother
Yes, his brother Zeno Roth was great, too. I saw Uli in Cleveland in May, and he played a tribute song for his brother called don't tell the wind. It was one of his brothers songs.
My favorite TH-cam guitar teacher teaching the ways of my favorite guitarist. Yes! If only I could get my hand to move fast enough for his stuff. I've been trying to learn his solos on Longing for Fire for years. His melodic inventiveness just blows my mind. Now if you do a video on Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner all will be complete.
Tokyo Tapes has my favourite strat tones ever, and practically every day I wish I could lay my hands on an extended range guitar to copy some of his ideas. Brilliant player.
Uli is a total badass, he said he heard the opening lick of the Sails of Charon being a violin. Instrumentally he heard it as part of a violin concerto.
Dude, you have quickly became my GO-TO teacher. You are a killer player and just as excellent at teaching and explaining in terms everyone can understand! Thank you very much for what you do!!
I remember the day I first heard the Electric Sun Earthquake album , pretty soon after it came out, bought as an import, since it was hard to find anywhere. Very inspiring, to say the least. We were all Schenker fans, and had seen Pat Travers and Frank Marino, but this was a different style - super fluid with exotic tonalities. Sure, our minds and ears were already boggled by Sails Of Charon, but this was Uli's project for sure.
I never caught that on to the Randy Rhoads trills in Pictured Life.......WOW!!!! I can't un-hear it now!!!! I LOVE Uli Jon Roth and Randy Rhoads!!!! Awesome video!!!
I've been listening to Uli since the late 70's, truly a fantastic player and influence to others. He also played a gig at my local bar and I got to have a good chat with him, super nice guy and very willing to talk about music stuff and try to explain his thought processes to a mere mortal!!!
Great feature, David!! Uli has been a hero of mine, along Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen, for quite some time now… If people don’t understand how phenomenal of a player and writer he is, they should have a look at some his footage from the ‘70s right up through today… He was married to Hendrix’s girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, until her passing… The man is a true legend!! Well done, Mr. Brewster!!
One of my favorite Scorpions albums live Tokyo Tapes it's a screamer Uli is all over that ! The Sky guitars are definitely something completely different Kool lesson David 🤘
Yes he says it himself, he was heavily influenced by Hendrix from a style, performance and flair perspective, ofcourse Uli took his playing to the stratosphere level........he is an absolute master of his craft......
Looking forward to listening to this later when I have more time and can watch on the big screen. One of my faves. But wanted to comment that I hope with Bernie Marsden's recent passing, we will see a lesson from you on his work with Whitesnake.
Bernie was with the band Babe Ruth before Whitesnake and does an incredible solo at the end of a song called Oh! Doctor. It’s short but very sweet. And the tone is mind blowing.
I love your video, Uli is my favorite guitar player, I was around 12 years old when Tokyo tapes album came out , that turn my world upside down in music , after that I wanted more Uli but he left scorpions, but then he came back stronger with his new projects ,now I"m 58 and stiil a huge fan of Uli. He touring right now he is coming to Ramona mainstage in a couple month, I'll be there to seeing play and also to say hi, not only he is one of the greatest guitar players ever also a very nice person, I met him twice. Keep those videos going ,you are doing a excellent job , you just discribed everything about Uli just perfect, I"m glad that there are alot of Uli's fans outhere feel the same way. Thank you for sharing those lessons
Back in the 1970s we rock guitarists we're aware of Ulrich Roth from on the early Scorpions albums but he was a bit of a mystery since it was before the band reached much popularity in the USA. Ulrich never considered himself a metal guitarist and has always been more into being a composer rather than a guitarist. He's great!
found Virgin Killer at a discount store in 1987 my first time hearing Uli, changed my whole perspective on guitar playing. Got to meet him several years ago and he is truly one of the nicest and down to earth musicians you'll ever encounter. still get chills every time I hear Sun in my Hand. thanks for the insight and you're appreciation of Uli and his style
These were my musical beginnings. Extremely influential for me. Thanks for this. Check out the song: Eleison off Beyond The Astral Skies. Amazing song on an Amazing album.
Great lesson. Michael Romeo has been my favorite player for a long time. Uli is a big influence for Romeo. Romeo actually got me into Uli. I think Romeo did a tribute to Uli on the last Symphony-X album with the song: "Charon". Phrygian dominant theme. I don't think Romeo ever said it was an official tribute song, but the style/influence is pretty obvious.
I recently had Sails of Charon pop up on my itunes and I have just been blown away by it. That last rip before the vocals at around the 2:00 mark just gives me chills. I never heard the early Scorpions stuff and wonder how much harder edged they would have been if he had stayed
I went to bed early last might and missed this! Uli has been one of my top 5 fave players since the early 80's.😍🤩 Edit: I think 32 frets is the least amount of frets on his Sky guitars, but most are 36 frets, with one or two that have only whole steps for the last few frets. Or at least that's he had over a decade ago.
Love Uli, especially his bluesier playing.the solo on your light is probably my all time favorite. In Trance is my favorite uli scorpions album. Evening wind is another great solo
great vid.. way above my modest ability but very enjoyable... uli is like the hidden gem of guitaring, he very rarely gets included in top 100 guitar polls , i like that because that keeps him secret.. always enjoyed his work.. saw him in 2000 using the sky guitar doing this bach stuff which kinda went above everybodies head...and crossed paths with him in a pub in the uk.. we paused for a brief micro second looking at each other..i think he was waiting for me to say 'hi uli'... but.. i thought.. no it wont be him in here, so i said nothing... and of course the crush velvet black jacket an scarve it WAS him... lol... he lives here in kent uk ...lol.... any chance of a Rudolph schenker and matthias jabbs lesson for us mere mortals....?
Loved the Scorpions in the 70's after Uli left, I wasn't into the Scorpions as much anymore... Uli is an Outstanding guitarist, he should be recognized.
Many years ago Roth did a live tribute in Germany to Jimi Hendrix called The Spirit of Jimi Hendrix. The vocalist the hired was mediocre but Roth’s playing was spot on spectacular. Great player.
Hi, David, *thank you* for this! My friends and I discovered Ulu through Tokyo Tapes and fell in love with him! He looks and plays *exactly how you picture a Wizard to play!*
Hi Dave, thanks for the great work o UJR's work. Maybe you may be able to do a lesson on the intro of "Polar Nights" before the main riff. form the Scorpions Live Tokyo Tapes album ? Some great tips in this lesson, thanks.
Max Webster's "Battlescar," with the guys from Rush as special guests, is ridiculously epic! Features guitarists Alex Lifeson & Kim Mitchell doing beautiful, harmonized guitar lines!
Yeah, I think Uli Roth has always been a one of a kind guitar player - I've been totally struck by his powerful and virtuosic playing since the first time I'd seen and heard him play. No wonder that given his interests as a musician and player he sort of "transcended" the stuff the Scorpions were heading to just as they became ever more commercially successful - and he quit... I'll always remember having seen Uli play with the Scorpions in the (obviously rather smallish) break area or "forum space" of a local elementary school (just imagine that!) before the band eventually made it big.
Uli Roth is one of the few guitarists who is pretty much perfect in rock lead guitar.. he has explosive chops, great bending and feeling and tone and can do bluesy or exotic sounding stuff, nearly every solo he does is unique and fits the song just right. I put Gary Moore in that category too
Hi David, I've already asked you about the pickups in your Les Paul, now would please let me know what pickups you are using in your Strat for this video?
Man this is very helpful. Could you do a cover on Electric sun? There's not many people who know that song and barely any or none at all who has covered that song. Its a masterpiece

But Uli was thankfully talked out of it by Klaus and Rudolph. But in America we knew of them and not the Scorpions until about 1980. By that point Uli was out of the Scorps and into his Electric Sun phase.
