    ⭐️In this video, Mike takes you on a tour of an impressive HO-scale layout!
    This model railroad train display showcases the talents of members of the Ozarks Model Railroad Association and features operations of the Frisco Railway, Burlington Northern Railroad, and BNSF Railway. The layout has been under construction for at least the last 30 years and is one of the largest model railroad displays in the region.

      Thank you! I’m having a lot of fun planning things out. I look forward to getting to the good stuff sometime soon! I’ve been on the hunt for some grain elevator/feed mill kits I can use for the Appleton City section. I think that’ll make for a really cool little area here on the rebuild/expansion.

    Looking forward to the progress of this layout. I modeled Union Pacific in an 1991-92 era, but have always loved the Katy!

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! Thank you! 91-92 is a good era as well. I do have some fond memories of the UP from when I was a kid. I’m pretty sure I might get some sighs from fellow modelers if I run any of that yellow power on my MKT layout! Perhaps some of the MP canary units would be an okay compromise? Ha! -Mike

    Awesome room, Mike! It's gonna be alot of work prepping the space and building the layout, but it'll be worth it in the end when trains are running! Thanks for sharing!

      Thank you, Randall! I definitely have my work cut out for me! I’m taking extra time to get the space done- and complete the planning- since I will be here for quite some time to come. I want to get it right, but I’m also excited to get some trains running! -Mike

    It will be fun watching a layout being built from scratch. Your double doors and the small section of the old layout gave me an idea. Instead of a duck under or a lift gate how about a module that can roll out. When the layout is not in use the module is removed to allow access to the doors. During operation sessions or just enjoying the trains the module would be in place.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching, Christopher! The idea of a roll-out module is intriguing. That’s certainly sounds like one good alternative to a duck under. I will have to brainstorm about that one and see what I can come up with. That would be easier on the back, that’s for sure! -Mike

    Mike-looks like a great space for your layout! My only advice is take your time and finish the construction before starting the layout. I have seen some great multi-level layouts, but prefer single level myself.

    Very nice space to build your new layout. Look forward to following along. Might want to check the barrinna lights I think they make a connector so you can make the lights continuous and not have the cords between the lights.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, John! I will definitely check with Barrina about those connectors. I’m probably sending this set back and exchanging them for some that are easier on the eyes. These ones are 9000 lumens. They make me feel like I’ve been staring at the sun for too long…maybe a little too realistic! Ha.

    WOW! These are the things dreams are made of! OOOO The excitement! I remember the start of my last layout. The smell of fresh cut plywood and paint. AAaawwwww..... I'm seriously envious of the amount of space you have here. My layout room would hardly make a crew lounge for your layout. Being only 12'x9' with 4 levels. I did not have flat out space so I went up, you know the old saying, the sky is the limit? Not true, anything above your eye level is the limit. :) Just wow! Keep on living the model railroaders dream! That's going to be a nice layout. :)

      Hello! Thank you…yes, it is pretty exciting. The planning process has given me a few headaches- but in a good way. Haha. I’m grateful to have the space. Over the years, my layouts have been confined to whatever life provided- spare bedrooms, garages, etc. I guess I finally feel settled down now that I have the space for a decent sized layout. Ha! I appreciate you watching and staying tuned in for the journey! -Mike

      Thank you! It is encouraging to see it come together day by day. As I mentioned in the video, it won’t be as monstrous as some basement empires I’ve visited- but it’ll be more than plenty. I could have added some real estate by not carving out a restroom- but I decided in the long run it’ll be handy having one downstairs!

    Dear Main Track Trains, very interesting how you went over the basement as it is now. Cool to see what kind of work already has been done.
    On the lights you’ve installed. Like what you said on adding a filter. Don’t know if you plan to add a valence over the layout? Do think though that would be a great way to keep sufficient lighting on the subjects and will prevent the blinding effect you now experience whilst the light is shining in all directions.
    Considering on a double deck layout, because there’s plenty of space towards the ceiling, don’t put your first deck to high, which will most definitely restrict the available space above the subsequent scenic decks. Also, I think the long wall is an excellent location for a significant staging yard. Keeping in mind what you said about the layout footprint; such a great length of run will allow for very low gradient access towards the staging level. Maybe you’ll consider a helix, at the very least between the two scenic decks, but to reach the staging yard I humbly don’t think you really need one. Great vid, looking forward to seeing your progress in following episodes. Cheerio

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! I sure appreciate you tuning in! I have played with the lighting some more. I have indeed gone the route of a valance type of setup. I may experiment some more with some other ideas, but it has seemed to work so far. I agree- you don’t want to blind anyone. I found out the hard way after working around the open lights for a few hours! My previous lights weren’t nearly as bright. I’ll probably do a lighting episode sometime soon! -Mike

    you should definitely put in Warrensburg if you expand enough I almost modeled that area before deciding on what I am planning on now lotta industry there back in the day in the railroad bottoms plus the valley where the tracks run out of town to the west are gorgeous

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Drew! Warrensburg is a pretty cool place, too. I visited there often while living in Sedalia. My very first train ride was on Amtrak to Warrensburg! I recall watching quite a few trains downtown during those years, but I’m thinking most of the industries were gone by then. That line was a great place to watch trains in the 80s and 90s. -Mike

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! I am playing with some possibilities, but I am planning to stay as close to the prototype track plan as possible. Things will obviously be condensed in spots. I am following the official MKT plans from 1984, which is pretty close to my 1987 timeframe. That makes planning easier, but it is frustrating trying to whittle down what I have room for! -Mike

    From many years of operations, TALL layouts are better than low layouts. I'm 6'. I hate to bend over to see car numbers and uncouple etc. It is not fun on the back or the knees. A layout I have run on is set up for kids to see and run, it is way too low. You can always give a person a step stool, but it is much harder to cut someone off at the knees to work on a low layout.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s great advice! I’m thinking I’ll go with either 55 or 58 inches high, although closer to 65 would be eye level for me. I built a small module last night that I plan on mounting at the different heights to test which works best. I don’t plan on having any sections more than 2 feet deep, so arm reach shouldn’t be a problem either way.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! Great question! I am working on a single level format currently. However, I am constructing it high enough that I will easily have room to add a lower level in the future. We will see how long it tries me to get the first level done! -Mike

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching! Right now, I am planning a mostly single level layout. However, I do plan on having a lower level staging area under one portion. I'm also constructing my one deck high enough to clear a second one below should I choose to go that route sometime in the future. I'm thinking one level will keep me plenty busy for the time being! -Mike
