Did I speak to soon in my review of the new MKT SW1200s switch engines by Walthers? When the units wre released, I gave the models a great view for their smooth operation, great sound, and intricate details. In my first ever "review revision" I talk about how the ESU LokSound 5 decoder in of my new units burned up and temporarily shorted out my layout.

Question of the day: What is your favorite decoder brand, and why? This SW1200 was one of three ESU equipped units I have; the rest are Tsunami and TCS.

Soundtraxx Tsunami 2 (please do not be confused with Tsunami as Tsunami 2 replaced Tsunami) as you don't need a special programmer to have the prototypical sounds for the prototype nor have to spend the long amount of time waiting for the custom sound files to download unless you want music on your locomotive. One thing about a lot of the locomotives that have ESU main boards in them, ESU didn't make them fully compatible with other brand of decoders therefore you have to replace the main board with a decoder buddy. I had 3 ESU decoders from manufacturer locomotives smoke on me and stuck Tsunami 2 and Blunami (Tsunami 2 w/ building in Bluetooth) in them and haven't had any issues since. Also Soundtraxx has the Tsunami Soundcar that can be added to your rolling stock and easily consisted with the Tsunami 2/Blunami decoders. I did a video on that several months ago.

Sorry to see your SW1200's have to go back for repair. I had an issue with a brand new Atlas with Loksound, sent it back in for repair, they let it set in their warehouse for 6 weeks before telling me that it had gotten damaged in shipping.. Unfortunately after so long USPS was unwilling to pay my insurance claim so basically Atlas screwed me out of over $200. Hope you have a better experience with Walthers.

It’s an ESU/Loksound problem. I pre-ordered/purchased an HO Scale AC4400 from ScaleTrains, within 1st hour of run time, half the lights stopped working, but continued to run and operate normally. ScaleTrains sent shipping label to send back and sent replacement. 2nd loco ran fine for 4 days until it experienced same issue as yours and even melted shell above decoder, sent that one back and ScaleTrains sent 3rd loco. I monitored the 3rd loco extensively while running with an infrared laser thermometer and gradually added rolling stock for weight. Ran perfectly for 25 hrs of documented run times, then had same issue as first one. ScaleTrains indicated it’s and issue with the decoder or the motherboard the decoder plugs into. The 3rd loco is at ScaleTrains undergoing surgery to replace motherboard and decoder. After the first 2 had issues, I suspected a bad batch of decoders. I have an ES44AC from ScaleTrains that runs flawlessly

Hi! I contacted Walthers customer service at 1 800 4 TRAINS and they sent me a return label. They asked some simple questions- like what the problem is and where I purchased them. It was a quick and easy process. I’ve been told the issue isn’t just the Katy version, and some other batches of road names also had problems. I’ll keep everyone posted. As far as decoders are concerned I only had one problem with a ESU decoder that was with Rapido SW1200 and they fixed it right away.
