    I won a 15K by several seconds from the 2nd place when I was in my 20's because I counted wrong and thought I was in 2nd place for the second half of it. I was so concentrated in just staying upright and running to try and catch the person in the first place that I didn't even pay attention to anything else. Could just be genetics, our bodies are all incredibly different and the more styles of training you do the more strengths and weaknesses you'll see that you just naturally have. Like I'm nothing special for the most part except for my arm muscles, they have like an inhuman amount of endurance. I can do a maximum intensity arm routine for easily an hour straight. Or arm wrestle a room full of people for several hours without getting tired. And the next day my arms won't even be particularly sore. My arms just genetically are efficient or something, the rest of my body sucks though. 😂

    As a person who is stocky built I personally never noticed larger leg muscles hindering my running. I was in the military and we did endurance runs for hours and I was golden the entire time. Granted I ran at about 7-8 minutes per mile, but I still ran for 4+ hours without stopping. We had water stations around the track and basically you just ran until you couldn't run anymore. I was able to go longer than most of the cross country runners with their skinny legs. My stocky legs helped a lot with keeping my upright on uneven ground.

    The best pace is exactly the same speed the whole race such that you gradually increase effort until it’s at 100% for the final 20-60 seconds (or the time it takes creatine phosphate stores to deplete from 100% effort, which varies).

    Does drafting really matter in running? My intuition is that the amount of power spent moving air is fairly negligible compared to all the losses due to going up and down and energy loss of the shoe-ground contact.

    • @n0tpossible
      @n0tpossible 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      The benefits are fairly negligible in almost every circumstance. But when youre all professional athletes who are trying to eek out wins by the tiniest of margins, even a faction of a precent can be meaningful.

      In certain circumstances it makes all the difference. Drafting helps with pacing and energy conservation. I remember one race in which it was very frigid cold and windy that I ran behind a guy who had the same stride as me. It made the run much easier compared to how it was at the beginning where it felt like I was running against a wall

    I think the way the Africans are running start to tape leading and pulling away in longer distances instead of running with the pack is changing how distance running strategies work. Now, you simply have to be fast for the entire distance and not just finding a point in the race to “make your move.” Kipchoge made the concept work. Also, on a lesser scale Ingebrigtsen From Norway likes to squeeze the kick out of competitors by running hard the whole race.
    In the 70s Steve Prefontaine tried to perfect the strategy. Many times he failed, but he was figuring the training needed to run Gun to Tape at one incredible pace.

    I never tried distance this way but back when i was a heavy boy in a residential placement i would go to gym class and jog for 45 minutes. At first i could barely keep it going. But as time went on i became an unstoppable force. I would maintain the same pace the entire time and i would just continue lapping anyone else also running.
    After a while your legs get used to the motions and at that point you can put things on autopilot.
