i use bases because I have no skill of drawing on a computer on paper, its fine but not in the slightest on a laptop or computer I'm too shaky when doing fine lines XD
Bee Sollux Captor I had the same problem too, but if you wanna get better, dont use bases. my drawings on my wall still look like shit, but I still don't use bases because 1. it doesn't teach you anything on drawing bodies better and 2. they look even shittier in the end. just practice alot and I bet your drawings will be amazing in the end :3

guys. It's not like that. i'm a musician who can play a handful instruments. That's the artform that drives me. But I love it when people talk about what drives them too. I personally do not have the drive or desire to draw but i appreciate those who do.

Even Hasbro themselves are guilty of blatantly re-colouring characters. I can forgive Raindrops for being a recolour of Rainbow Dash, since her design is pretty simple and Raindrops is a background character, but the merchandise itself... oh God. I remember back in 2011, and brushable that wasn't any of the Mane 6 was just a re-colour of the Main 6 (they weren't even characters from the show). Worse were the blindbags, when Lyra was a Twilight recolour, Trixie was a Rarity recolour and EVEN FLUTTERSHY was just a Rainbow Dash recolour. The mobile game was no saint either, where we got characters like Forsythia (Rarity recolour) and Sprinkle Stripes (Applejack recolour). Thankfully, Hasbro have gotten their act together and thanks to the show's popularity, even supporting characters have gotten their own moulds and playsets.
Was just about to say that. Funny thing is people are more accepting about it in Transformers? It that because they're robots and thus could LITERALLY come off an assembly line?

I've slowly been moving away from bases. I used to (and still kinda do) have lots of trouble drawing humans, so I used bases all the time. I just could never get the proportions right. And the hands! THE HANDS! Edit: Welp nine months later and I haven't touched a base since I made this comment. My art has improved SO much. I can actually draw people now, and I like how they turn out most of the time. *I still can't do hands to save my life but I'm working on it.*
I used to suck at drawing hands too, but then I looked at this tutorial and BAM, I could suddenly draw hands really well after about 5 tries. Use your own hand at first, then ask friends or family to pose for you. thevirtualinstructor.com/how-to-draw-hands.html
I also used to draw onto bases back then, but my dad (who always watched me draw shz) saw me and said "Hey, you can't just steal that, you can't improve with those things. You're technically STEALING something from someone made, it's like someone does half the work and you're making it all effortlessly." and then I stopped xD
I remember commenting "what are your thoughts on bases" a few years ago, and I (almost) completely agree. I had to let go of using bases a year ago and now I feel more original in what I do. It was scary at first, but rewarding. I myself have made bases and am not very proud of them because my new work gets almost no attention. I can say that I have had "my" bases stolen before, and it doesn't feel very good. Please credit the base maker, making bases can actually take hours or days. Great video, Maddy
I've had someone tell me I didn't do art right and was stealing before. I took a screenshot from an anime, drew on top of it, changing pretty much every design of the original, except for the eye shape since who I was drawing had the same ones, spent 3 days on it. It was done in pixels, too. The line between the shading had about 5 different colours in it for better blending. No idea how that was stealing and not making it different, just the same pose. And this person had proper grammar. Then they started saying bad words, and saying that they'd report me. Ah people, some are just.. Many words could go there.
i cant draw and its not for lack of practice and trying its cause i have very limited sensation in my fingers and toes so fine details are difficult however there are other forms of art one can delve into other than drawing. There are those who find artistic inspiration in music and rhythm and others still who paint pictures with words. My poems and short stories may not be very good in my opinion but they are fun to write and others seem to enjoy them so anyone can find their nitch in the artistic community if you put your mind to it and fallow that passionate soul. ^-~
people have to use bases to start off half of the time :/ and it doesnt ruin originality.. all ponies (unless they are special) have the same body, so just add some hair and things and bam
How the hell does it ruin originality? Most- or a lot- of ponies in ponyville have the same body type, unless they're royalty, or a ""special"" pony. Bases are for people who are just starting out on art, or they're also for people who are trying to find a certain pose for a character but just either can't find it, or just can't make it themselves for some odd reason.
FluffyPuffe it's helping people get better at designing a character's clothing and accessories, it also gives you a sense on what art style you want. Ik it sounds like a big deal taking a base and using it, but it isn't, you get an idea on what you want to do with ur art style it's very simple and understandable why people do this, but ur opinion is ur opinion and you did not give ur opinion rudely, good job on that :) I'm genuinely happy about this I swear
My friend is one of the best artist I know and she started by practicing with bases. She sometimes still uses then for fun and as a referance- I agree that you shouldn't use a base without credit and that you should step away from them as you get better, but saying they don't help people improve just isn't true--
It mostly just upsets me when artists,if you can really call them that, create whole channels solely on recoloring bases , and hell even have people pay money to get characters drawn with these bases. If you don't try harder harder you're not going to get any better.
You mean to tell me I've been drawing things from scratch, when I could've been stealing other people's drawings to do half the work for me? Seriously, it did not even occur to me that it was common practice for a Person to color over a base. I always thought those were put out for people to practice with, like those drawing stick figure skeleton things. I used bases to practice drawing pony anatomy, and even then, I drew the base several times in several different ways, without tracing. Such a naive fool I've been!

I can draw very well on paper but I'm not very good at drawing on a computer, I've been trying to get better at digital art but ehh I'm not really getting any better. Perhaps once I can get a tablet I'll be better at it.
I know I am really late, but I've dying to tell you my opinion! I fell into the pony base hole once, but soon I started practicing drawing my own ponies! I found it really fun, because I could let my imagination go wild! Before, I had to limit myself to what the people of devianart gave me. Now, I'm getting really good, and I've gained a lot of confidence. Thank you for helping me grow as an aspiring artist.

Well to make a long story short Amber Spark + Evening Breeze + my self + Summer Sky are a pretty durn good recoloured version of Season 1 Luna and Wind Whisper is a good recoloured Sweetie Belle it’s only Winter Magic and Cloud Runner + Jumbo that are based off of there original bases
I hate recolours too, especially when they make up stories that they're their sisters, or brothers!! I mean, they could use bases, I use bases when I can't think of anything to draw myself (or when I'm just being lazy) but I HATE recolours!!
I agree with you 100%. And, I like that you pointed out that other fandoms are guilty of this laziness, too. I feel like re-colour OCs is one of the things that gave the Sonic fandom a bad name. Re-colour OCs, no matter what fandom they're done in, only seek to hinder the fandom and hold back the potential of anyone trying to become a better artist.

I am one of the people who uses bases, I don’t use them to « practice » I just do it for fun. I already have my own original art style and I don’t need other people bases to draw characters, I just do for fun. But you have a very good point in this, when I show my drawings (that I used on bases) I always say to people that I used a base to draw it and it’s not my original art style, like I said I do it for fun, plus it’s fun to see my oc in different art style. Because of this video i stoped using bases. I did find the bases really easy and fast to do. I started with looking at references and going from there, and now I have found my own design and style. Also because of your videos I've changed how my oc is. When I first saw your videos they really upset me until I decided to just watch one and decided that you made really good points and that I agreed with you to some extent. And eventually I do now agree with you 100% on things like this, I just stumbled across one of your old videos and I want to say thank you for helping me, even though I doubt you'll see this xD
when i first started drawing, i just looked up sections of what i wanted to draw (i.e., face shape, eye styles, etc.) and just tried to draw them individually. after a while of that, i looked up ways to show emotion- soon enough, i stopped those altogether. its good to use stuff such as bases when starting, but not later, when you finally can get the shape on your own...
I am sooo bad a drawing but i Love to do it but it's just that i fall Into such a deep depression when I see others fantastic artworks like yours, and I try to draw beter everyday but I'm still soo bad at it and that almost makes me cry of both anger and sadness 😠😟 (don't feel bad for me, I'm just bad at almost everything)
I hear ya'. T-T I usually feel the same way. But then some little kid who doesn't know how to draw comes along and looks at my artwork and says, "Wow, you're amazing! I wish I could draw like you!" and I'm just dumbfounded, wondering why they're so impressed. Then I wonder if these "fantastic" artists that _I've_ been admiring sometimes feel the same way, especially since I always see _incredible_ drawings on DeviantArt with artist's comments whining about how it didn't turn out as good as they hoped. _No matter how bad you think you are, there's always somebody else out there who would do anything for even half of your skill._ I guess what I'm trying to say is, *you're probably better than you think you are.* Try not to compare yourself to others. Sometimes it helps to look at _your own_ old art and see just how much you've improved. ^_^

art has always been my favorite thing to do! I stared drawing since I could hold a crayon, tho I stopped drawing for a few years, but in 2015, I got back into drawing. I always challenged myself to improve, I've been drawing everyday to improve and trying to find my style, tho it took a while to find it. I'm so proud of how much I have improved since then!
most characters I draw are very random and I just draw as I think of them without a clear picture in mind. often times more times than not one of the eyes will be covered because I suck at drawing eyes. when I was younger i thought the only way to cover one of the eyes was to make the hair longer but now instead I do things like give them an eye patch or have a heavy shadow cover their face. one thing that helps me to make OCs is to pick something I like. like a specific shirt I own or pants or shoes or my favorite wig and focus on how to make the character suit the item or items I've chose. I suggest this to people a lot because it helps me.

When I wanted to start doing art, i looked at lots of lots of references, i finally draw the way i wanted to! from that day on I've always been challenging myself in art and also now i improve everyday!

Bases are actuly, like you said, very helpfull when I first started drawing bases helped me a lot when learning the shapes of the ponys but recolors arent event trying, there not even tracing a base line for line
Ok I'm not trying to be rude or start anything, far from it even, but there are reasons that people use bases to create their OC's. Yes you can argue that it is in a way "Lazy" but the truth of the matter is that there are people who just have trouble making lines that are straight and consistent with the style of the show, much like myself, the reason for this can be a number of things, in my case I enjoy doing digital artwork but my hands aren't as steady as a lot of people's so it's much more difficult for me to create straight lines, or lines that perfectly match up with the style of the show. As well, I believe that if you need to use a base to create your OC it's fine, simply because no matter what, even if they do use a base 90% of the time the OC doesn't much resemble the character that the base was made from in the first place. And as long as redit is given to the one who created the base, I see no harm in it.
Idk if this is meant to be rude or a warning because its hard to animate with already drawn charecters and having to change specific things espacaily things like mouths or blinking eyes

I have used bases for my OCs but mostly I love to draw by hand, im not great with drawing ponies so doing bases kinda helps me in a way and recently I have slid away from using bases unless it's for a reference or it's for fun.
Pillow Dragon Why I hate comments like this: - not necessary - - Sometimes, OCs need to be ranted on or given criticism. Whether it’s a good oc or not. People also need to be more original, instead of just having their “””oc”” look exactly like a canon character. - You say their cutie marks sometimes make no sense, and that they’re too fluffy...so that’s two reasons you hate them...yet you have a dragon(??) pfp that looks like it has a little bit of fluff, and the ears almost seem fluffy. I can see that you may not be 100% professional at drawing dragons (if your pfp is a dragon/if you drew it) but, for this you don’t have as much room to talk. If I hadn’t read your username, I would’ve mistaken your pfp as a cat with horns.

I used to recolor and I used to use basis but like you said it's just in the early stages and I started drawing on my own and I believe I've gotton a decent style down. So I 100% agree with your video. Also I love your style and character designs!
I draw by hand, though I do use bases when in the very beginning concept stage of a character to work out what colors I want to use. I never post these, I simply use them for personal reference. Once I get the colors down, I stop using the base, save it as a ref for digital coloring for that character, and move on to drawing the character myself and figuring out appearance aside from color. I have also traced drawings in the past to figure out how the anatomy of, say, a horse works. But again, I never posted those drawings, and those tracings hardly ever went bast basic structure and guidelines. Once I figured out what went where, I moved on from the tracing and free-handed the thing until I was relatively satisfied with how it looked.
(Thats my opinion) i imagine that good and bad ocs doesnt exist, everyone has their freedom to create their own character and it doesnt matter do they have neon, etc or not, their OC can be whatever they want and it would extremely boring if everyone had "good ocs". Mary sues are important too. But what i think of Mary sues is that they can be whatever their creators want them to be :) but i think its all, btw nice video :D
Creativity must have some kind of quality control. If everyone made something off the bat without putting any real thought into it and no one cared, there would be no improvement or growth in their ideas at all, and that to me is sad.
I love this video! And completely agree. I hate seeing recolored OCs it's pointless. I just roll my eyes every time someone posts on groups about their new character. No that's not a new OC it's obiviously I recolored Fluttershy(Etc.). I have only been in the fandom for about a year now. And alicorn and recolors drive me crazy.

I couldn't agree more. For those who re-color because they think they can't draw, you can, it is possible. "Impossible" says I'm possible itself alone. Yeah you may not feel comfortable putting the original in original characters, still try. Ocs are meant to be your own made up character, when I was 7 I drew my first OC, named fluff I believe, though it didn't look like any animal at all my father told me I was being creative, and made up my own creature. Also keep up the good work Mad Munchkin!
My plan for my Oc: • First choose colour and if it’s an earth pony, Pegasus, Unicorn etc • Take a base and draw out the hair idea and to see if I like it or not. • draw my own pony sketch and add the hair idea + the colour + a possible hat or somethin’
*watches video* - a few seconds later - *BEEP* Me: *falls out of chair screaming* I love your videos, and I also have two questions. 1) When creating an OC that is based off another character from, say a game or an anime, that is perfectly fine, correct? Obviously, the character won't have the same name, or the same backstory and whatnot. Rather, the idea of the character itself is again, based off of the chosen game character or anime character. For instance, if a character were based on Reaper from OverWatch. The person creating their OC would have their character potentially have a somewhat similar backstory, with the OC being neglected and turning evil. If not that, then the OC would have a color scheme similar to REaper - mainly blacks, grays, and reds. That's perfectly fine, right? 2) Cutie marks. The things that people hate designing due to the problem of trying to figure out how to portray their character's special talent and whatnot. So I know it's not okay to copy another person's design for a cutie mark, or copy one from the show. But, as stated from my first question, would it be okay to use other people's and character's cutie marks for "inspiration"?
I use to use a base for my early ocs, which were pony’s, but that’s because like you said, I was new to drawing just about anything with hooves. Still not sure if bases work or not, but I agree
I used to trace and use bases but now I NEVER do that! What I do now is look at other people's art, get inspired, and make my own piece of beautiful art (by the way everyone can become good if they practice)
You probably won't read this but this is how I see recolors and my experience with them. Recolor ocs ARE lazy and I had one, but I see them as like a base before starting to either draw one or create your own. *only I'm a 3D animator* in my SFM FNAF community recolored ocs are hated a lot especially Funtime Foxy recolors, Idk why. That's what I had. I honestly didn't like coloring a canon model, but I only experimented to see what colors that appealed to me the most, which at that time were black and purple. I chose colors that went very well together *black goes with everything lol* but I only did that as a base. That way I could get an idea for what I wanted my 3D model to look similar to and what colors I wanted. *but I changed my oc very recently so yeah*
I hate using bases because sometimes, I use the bucket filler thingy but when I click the pony, there is only a small bit of colour. One day I decided to stop using bases, but it turned out AWFUL. Now I use bases again.. I THINK I'M GONNA GIVE UP ON MAKING OCS NOW!!
this is all true, a few years ago when i first started making oc's i used bases but never a recolor oc, simply because i was using MS paint and didn't really know how to draw alone. eventually (while still using MS paint) i stopped using bases and slowly my work progressed. i no longer use MS paint and now my work never gets hate comments anymore, i am proud of my work and even though i use a base once in a blue moon it's not often and it's because i just really really like the base, but don't worry, when i actually use a base i always credit the artist and i make sure that everything else is 100% original other than the base of course :3
I used to use bases all the time (you can see on my DA) but now, I use them only when I'm bored and when I use them, I'm not going to let people see them on a public website like DeviantART. But, yes, bases can help people. When I didn't use bases like in 2015, I drew very lazy. Used the circle tool and other things. But then I started to use bases and always lil bit came away from them. And now, I'm here.
I started with HORRID base edits, as an artist, with recolored ocs, but as I sloooowly drifted away from them, I developed a style that I'm now pretty happy with, so, yeah, as you said, it's good for starting artists, but when people get better at bases, seriously, they need to try to develop their own style
I do use both bases and draw my own stuff. When I used to use bases they were just cause I didn't like how my style looked but now I draw a lot more than using bases, but that is kinda hard to tell now since I don't draw as much mlp as I used too. Using bases now for me is just for fun, references, or if there is a base with certain poses or whatnot.

guys. It's not like that. i'm a musician who can play a handful instruments. That's the artform that drives me. But I love it when people talk about what drives them too. I personally do not have the drive or desire to draw but i appreciate those who do.

Even Hasbro themselves are guilty of blatantly re-colouring characters. I can forgive Raindrops for being a recolour of Rainbow Dash, since her design is pretty simple and Raindrops is a background character, but the merchandise itself... oh God.
I remember back in 2011, and brushable that wasn't any of the Mane 6 was just a re-colour of the Main 6 (they weren't even characters from the show). Worse were the blindbags, when Lyra was a Twilight recolour, Trixie was a Rarity recolour and EVEN FLUTTERSHY was just a Rainbow Dash recolour. The mobile game was no saint either, where we got characters like Forsythia (Rarity recolour) and Sprinkle Stripes (Applejack recolour). Thankfully, Hasbro have gotten their act together and thanks to the show's popularity, even supporting characters have gotten their own moulds and playsets.

I've slowly been moving away from bases. I used to (and still kinda do) have lots of trouble drawing humans, so I used bases all the time. I just could never get the proportions right. And the hands! THE HANDS!
Edit: Welp nine months later and I haven't touched a base since I made this comment. My art has improved SO much. I can actually draw people now, and I like how they turn out most of the time. *I still can't do hands to save my life but I'm working on it.*
I used to suck at drawing hands too, but then I looked at this tutorial and BAM, I could suddenly draw hands really well after about 5 tries. Use your own hand at first, then ask friends or family to pose for you.

I remember commenting "what are your thoughts on bases" a few years ago, and I (almost) completely agree.
I had to let go of using bases a year ago and now I feel more original in what I do. It was scary at first, but rewarding. I myself have made bases and am not very proud of them because my new work gets almost no attention. I can say that I have had "my" bases stolen before, and it doesn't feel very good. Please credit the base maker, making bases can actually take hours or days. Great video, Maddy

I've had someone tell me I didn't do art right and was stealing before. I took a screenshot from an anime, drew on top of it, changing pretty much every design of the original, except for the eye shape since who I was drawing had the same ones, spent 3 days on it. It was done in pixels, too. The line between the shading had about 5 different colours in it for better blending. No idea how that was stealing and not making it different, just the same pose. And this person had proper grammar. Then they started saying bad words, and saying that they'd report me. Ah people, some are just.. Many words could go there.
i cant draw and its not for lack of practice and trying its cause i have very limited sensation in my fingers and toes so fine details are difficult however there are other forms of art one can delve into other than drawing. There are those who find artistic inspiration in music and rhythm and others still who paint pictures with words. My poems and short stories may not be very good in my opinion but they are fun to write and others seem to enjoy them so anyone can find their nitch in the artistic community if you put your mind to it and fallow that passionate soul. ^-~

How the hell does it ruin originality? Most- or a lot- of ponies in ponyville have the same body type, unless they're royalty, or a ""special"" pony. Bases are for people who are just starting out on art, or they're also for people who are trying to find a certain pose for a character but just either can't find it, or just can't make it themselves for some odd reason.
FluffyPuffe it's helping people get better at designing a character's clothing and accessories, it also gives you a sense on what art style you want. Ik it sounds like a big deal taking a base and using it, but it isn't, you get an idea on what you want to do with ur art style it's very simple and understandable why people do this, but ur opinion is ur opinion and you did not give ur opinion rudely, good job on that :)

My friend is one of the best artist I know and she started by practicing with bases. She sometimes still uses then for fun and as a referance- I agree that you shouldn't use a base without credit and that you should step away from them as you get better, but saying they don't help people improve just isn't true--
It mostly just upsets me when artists,if you can really call them that, create whole channels solely on recoloring bases , and hell even have people pay money to get characters drawn with these bases. If you don't try harder harder you're not going to get any better.

Seriously, it did not even occur to me that it was common practice for a Person to color over a base. I always thought those were put out for people to practice with, like those drawing stick figure skeleton things. I used bases to practice drawing pony anatomy, and even then, I drew the base several times in several different ways, without tracing. Such a naive fool I've been!

Well to make a long story short Amber Spark + Evening Breeze + my self + Summer Sky are a pretty durn good recoloured version of Season 1 Luna and Wind Whisper is a good recoloured Sweetie Belle it’s only Winter Magic and Cloud Runner + Jumbo that are based off of there original bases
I hate recolours too, especially when they make up stories that they're their sisters, or brothers!! I mean, they could use bases, I use bases when I can't think of anything to draw myself (or when I'm just being lazy) but I HATE recolours!!
I agree with you 100%. And, I like that you pointed out that other fandoms are guilty of this laziness, too. I feel like re-colour OCs is one of the things that gave the Sonic fandom a bad name. Re-colour OCs, no matter what fandom they're done in, only seek to hinder the fandom and hold back the potential of anyone trying to become a better artist.

I am one of the people who uses bases, I don’t use them to « practice » I just do it for fun. I already have my own original art style and I don’t need other people bases to draw characters, I just do for fun. But you have a very good point in this, when I show my drawings (that I used on bases) I always say to people that I used a base to draw it and it’s not my original art style, like I said I do it for fun, plus it’s fun to see my oc in different art style. Because of this video i stoped using bases. I did find the bases really easy and fast to do. I started with looking at references and going from there, and now I have found my own design and style. Also because of your videos I've changed how my oc is. When I first saw your videos they really upset me until I decided to just watch one and decided that you made really good points and that I agreed with you to some extent. And eventually I do now agree with you 100% on things like this, I just stumbled across one of your old videos and I want to say thank you for helping me, even though I doubt you'll see this xD
when i first started drawing, i just looked up sections of what i wanted to draw (i.e., face shape, eye styles, etc.) and just tried to draw them individually. after a while of that, i looked up ways to show emotion- soon enough, i stopped those altogether. its good to use stuff such as bases when starting, but not later, when you finally can get the shape on your own...

I usually feel the same way. But then some little kid who doesn't know how to draw comes along and looks at my artwork and says, "Wow, you're amazing! I wish I could draw like you!" and I'm just dumbfounded, wondering why they're so impressed. Then I wonder if these "fantastic" artists that _I've_ been admiring sometimes feel the same way, especially since I always see _incredible_ drawings on DeviantArt with artist's comments whining about how it didn't turn out as good as they hoped. _No matter how bad you think you are, there's always somebody else out there who would do anything for even half of your skill._
I guess what I'm trying to say is, *you're probably better than you think you are.* Try not to compare yourself to others. Sometimes it helps to look at _your own_ old art and see just how much you've improved. ^_^

art has always been my favorite thing to do! I stared drawing since I could hold a crayon, tho I stopped drawing for a few years, but in 2015, I got back into drawing. I always challenged myself to improve, I've been drawing everyday to improve and trying to find my style, tho it took a while to find it. I'm so proud of how much I have improved since then!
most characters I draw are very random and I just draw as I think of them without a clear picture in mind. often times more times than not one of the eyes will be covered because I suck at drawing eyes. when I was younger i thought the only way to cover one of the eyes was to make the hair longer but now instead I do things like give them an eye patch or have a heavy shadow cover their face. one thing that helps me to make OCs is to pick something I like. like a specific shirt I own or pants or shoes or my favorite wig and focus on how to make the character suit the item or items I've chose. I suggest this to people a lot because it helps me.

Ok I'm not trying to be rude or start anything, far from it even, but there are reasons that people use bases to create their OC's. Yes you can argue that it is in a way "Lazy" but the truth of the matter is that there are people who just have trouble making lines that are straight and consistent with the style of the show, much like myself, the reason for this can be a number of things, in my case I enjoy doing digital artwork but my hands aren't as steady as a lot of people's so it's much more difficult for me to create straight lines, or lines that perfectly match up with the style of the show. As well, I believe that if you need to use a base to create your OC it's fine, simply because no matter what, even if they do use a base 90% of the time the OC doesn't much resemble the character that the base was made from in the first place. And as long as redit is given to the one who created the base, I see no harm in it.

- Sometimes, OCs need to be ranted on or given criticism. Whether it’s a good oc or not. People also need to be more original, instead of just having their “””oc”” look exactly like a canon character.
- You say their cutie marks sometimes make no sense, and that they’re too fluffy...so that’s two reasons you hate them...yet you have a dragon(??) pfp that looks like it has a little bit of fluff, and the ears almost seem fluffy. I can see that you may not be 100% professional at drawing dragons (if your pfp is a dragon/if you drew it) but, for this you don’t have as much room to talk. I used to recolor and I used to use basis but like you said it's just in the early stages and I started drawing on my own and I believe I've gotton a decent style down. So I 100% agree with your video. Also I love your style and character designs!
I draw by hand, though I do use bases when in the very beginning concept stage of a character to work out what colors I want to use. I never post these, I simply use them for personal reference. Once I get the colors down, I stop using the base, save it as a ref for digital coloring for that character, and move on to drawing the character myself and figuring out appearance aside from color.
I have also traced drawings in the past to figure out how the anatomy of, say, a horse works. But again, I never posted those drawings, and those tracings hardly ever went bast basic structure and guidelines. Once I figured out what went where, I moved on from the tracing and free-handed the thing until I was relatively satisfied with how it looked.
(Thats my opinion) i imagine that good and bad ocs doesnt exist, everyone has their freedom to create their own character and it doesnt matter do they have neon, etc or not, their OC can be whatever they want and it would extremely boring if everyone had "good ocs". Mary sues are important too. But what i think of Mary sues is that they can be whatever their creators want them to be :) but i think its all, btw nice video :D
Creativity must have some kind of quality control. If everyone made something off the bat without putting any real thought into it and no one cared, there would be no improvement or growth in their ideas at all, and that to me is sad.

I'm glad that I was never able to use bases when I was younger
I couldn't agree more. For those who re-color because they think they can't draw, you can, it is possible. "Impossible" says I'm possible itself alone. Yeah you may not feel comfortable putting the original in original characters, still try. Ocs are meant to be your own made up character, when I was 7 I drew my first OC, named fluff I believe, though it didn't look like any animal at all my father told me I was being creative, and made up my own creature. Also keep up the good work Mad Munchkin!
My plan for my Oc:
• First choose colour and if it’s an earth pony, Pegasus, Unicorn etc
• Take a base and draw out the hair idea and to see if I like it or not.
• draw my own pony sketch and add the hair idea + the colour + a possible hat or somethin’

I love your videos, and I also have two questions.
1) When creating an OC that is based off another character from, say a game or an anime, that is perfectly fine, correct? Obviously, the character won't have the same name, or the same backstory and whatnot. Rather, the idea of the character itself is again, based off of the chosen game character or anime character. For instance, if a character were based on Reaper from OverWatch. The person creating their OC would have their character potentially have a somewhat similar backstory, with the OC being neglected and turning evil. If not that, then the OC would have a color scheme similar to REaper - mainly blacks, grays, and reds. That's perfectly fine, right?
2) Cutie marks. The things that people hate designing due to the problem of trying to figure out how to portray their character's special talent and whatnot. So I know it's not okay to copy another person's design for a cutie mark, or copy one from the show. But, as stated from my first question, would it be okay to use other people's and character's cutie marks for "inspiration"?
I use to use a base for my early ocs, which were pony’s, but that’s because like you said, I was new to drawing just about anything with hooves. Still not sure if bases work or not, but I agree
I used to trace and use bases but now I NEVER do that! What I do now is look at other people's art, get inspired, and make my own piece of beautiful art (by the way everyone can become good if they practice)
You probably won't read this but this is how I see recolors and my experience with them.
Recolor ocs ARE lazy and I had one, but I see them as like a base before starting to either draw one or create your own. *only I'm a 3D animator* in my SFM FNAF community recolored ocs are hated a lot especially Funtime Foxy recolors, Idk why. That's what I had. I honestly didn't like coloring a canon model, but I only experimented to see what colors that appealed to me the most, which at that time were black and purple. I chose colors that went very well together *black goes with everything lol* but I only did that as a base. That way I could get an idea for what I wanted my 3D model to look similar to and what colors I wanted.
*but I changed my oc very recently so yeah*
I hate using bases because sometimes, I use the bucket filler thingy but when I click the pony, there is only a small bit of colour. One day I decided to stop using bases, but it turned out AWFUL. Now I use bases again.. I THINK I'M GONNA GIVE UP ON MAKING OCS NOW!!
i often search up bases to se how people do poses and then tries my own version on it
i love using bases because i like to stay in style with the show, and i always give credit where credit is due.
this is all true, a few years ago when i first started making oc's i used bases but never a recolor oc, simply because i was using MS paint and didn't really know how to draw alone.
eventually (while still using MS paint) i stopped using bases and slowly my work progressed.
i no longer use MS paint and now my work never gets hate comments anymore, i am proud of my work and even though i use a base once in a blue moon it's not often and it's because i just really really like the base, but don't worry, when i actually use a base i always credit the artist and i make sure that everything else is 100% original other than the base of course :3
I used to use bases all the time (you can see on my DA) but now, I use them only when I'm bored and when I use them, I'm not going to let people see them on a public website like DeviantART. But, yes, bases can help people. When I didn't use bases like in 2015, I drew very lazy. Used the circle tool and other things. But then I started to use bases and always lil bit came away from them. And now, I'm here.
I started with HORRID base edits, as an artist, with recolored ocs, but as I sloooowly drifted away from them, I developed a style that I'm now pretty happy with, so, yeah, as you said, it's good for starting artists, but when people get better at bases, seriously, they need to try to develop their own style
I do use both bases and draw my own stuff. When I used to use bases they were just cause I didn't like how my style looked but now I draw a lot more than using bases, but that is kinda hard to tell now since I don't draw as much mlp as I used too. Using bases now for me is just for fun, references, or if there is a base with certain poses or whatnot.
