A HUGE thank you to Silver Quill and Doctor Wolf for their contributions to the script and providing their voices for this video! All the art in the video was drawn by me, and consisted of 176 separate drawings all together. With a new look for Maddy and Mary Sue, a brand new design for Silver Quill and a redesign for Dr Wolf, this project was great fun to work on, but BOY was it hard work! Worth it though to work with two of my favourite reviewers.
This was a mammoth project and its far from perfect but I did my best with it. It's a subject I've wanted to cover for a while but I wanted to have someone else with a non pony OC to provide their perspective on the subject. Since writing and recording this video I have discovered other non pony OCs, so there are more than I thought, but they are still few and far between. Do you know any other non Pony OCs, apart from Silver Quill, Dr Wolf and Tyandaga? Let me know in the comments below!

What species is your OC?
Rikkaku is a Hippogryph in a non-traditional sense.
My main OC is a hydra with elemental magic, each head represents two elements and a different type of dragon that represents the elements of that head. I love elemental characters and creatures, so a hydra is a cool way of mixing these concepts
Bronies worst fear is creating an oc that's already been taken. Finding a unique, never used before name is the worst part of the whole freakin thing!!!!!

Mad Munchkin like my griffon OC? i mean, i could write a book about him, send him on some adventures and even let the main character from the book i already wrote have a cameo (dont ask how)
anyway, this cameo thing is only possible because of a certain aspect of my book, which is kinda fun to write. imagine a mix of Discord´s hom world and Distortion World from pokemon platinum. i mean, goodbye logics and physics, hello fun.

Hammy Haven I know that feeling it took me two solid months of thinking about a way to make my OC unique before I thought I was ready to get him commissioned to be drawn only to realize I forgot some really base things like what his cutie mark would be.
Patchwork i had the same problem with mine. so first i made him and his family have a curse that they dont get cutie marks, which causes them to be skilled in many things, but then i went with the invisibility spell, which he can do at his age because he has a special talent for manipulating the psychological. he can see energy with a certain spell, which allows him to use the lock picking spell. but more info about him will be published in my spin-off series, if i find an animator.

It's always off putting to see Dr. Wolf on all fours.
It's hard to make your OC look original. You're constantly worried someone will call it "too mary sue" or "you stole your design from the brony artist" the truth is, because there are so many fans and artists, and lots of different art styles taken. It's difficult to find one unique to you, as your art style may be similar to another artist. However, as every artist is never EXACTLY THE SAME as another's work, it may be hard to find a medium that stands out, that makes people go, "That MUST be so and so's work, their style is VERY distinctive" Even if you stray from the four main choices, if you DO create an OC, like a wolf or hippogriff, there will always be people who say, "Oh, you copied Dr Wolf or Silver Quill" and that's harsh. The reality is, we, the brony community, need to be less critical about other's artwork, as their struggles to please you are many.

I mean, if you made a good character, and created lore around what being a crystal pony actually means for daily life, then I think that is a good idea.
But really, it still is a pony subspecies. Like bat ponies/thestrals or seaponies (which are awesome if done right).
Allen Holloway crystal ponies exist in canon.
Yes, they exist in canon. But they are not fleshed out at all. The only thing we know about crystallization is that it is affected by emotion and the Crystal Heart has something to do with it.
In order to make it a good character, you need to know things like that very well. The solution is to create a good head-canon about it.
i was once on DA and was making a character for a bronie RP. i tried making a robot pony and the bronies in this RP chat berated me because it was a robot.

I use a draconequus OC, and I too was berated. They aren't OP by any means (I don't roleplay anyway), but the species enough was enough to elicit outrage.

I have an mlp OC that is a Chimera. (google it to understand) Her character is outgoing, but can be sensitive, she likes being in groups but can keep to herself at times. This lead a lot of people to be confused, social? Anti social? Outgoing? Scaredy-cat? No body really understood her, but that’s why I like her!

Mine's a generic changeling drone that had to... leave (lightly putting it) the hive/colony due to unfortunate misunderstandings. They don't have much personality and their character is slowly being built up through roleplay.

My OC is 75% pony, 25% panda. She's basically a normal pony except 1) her colouration is a bit different, 2) she's not as intelligent (and thus can't speak), and 3) she eats a different diet.

That doesn't make any sense. Beyond not fitting with the lore of canon, if all that's affected in her design is coloring then you could literally take that piece out with no changes. Just making a random mix of species without being willing to stray from the norm of pony designs completely misses the point o this video. I would suggest choosing a species that would fit into the look of the show, if you're absolutely set on having a hybrid. If not, just make it a straight pony, there's no problem with that.

Most of the difference with her is mental ability, not really physical appearance.

I wasn't a brony when i made a drawing of my brony friends as ponies and I've had a goatee for the longest time so i thought it'd be funny if i ended up being a goat in the mlp universe, i drew him as an angry little guy and later (when I became a brony) during a joke with friends I said I'd live in Fluttershy's chicken coop cus she takes care of animals and my character would NOT like that at all.

Funnily enough, the reason I created a zebra OC was from a poll on Equestria Daily. Out of all of the options available (core 3, alicorn, griffon, etc) zebra had the fewest votes. I enjoyed the idea of zebra OCs and wanted to see more ideas of what they'd be like aside from Zecora.
Most people don't know about my OC because I don't really have an opportunity to show him off. Aside from my profile picture and channel art, I wouldn't have gotten much use out of it. I also don't quite have the artistic talent to make drawings of him myself that I'd be proud of, so going without the OC was more convenient for me. I never needed to use him until my AMWDW session, and even then, one of his volunteers drew the images of him.
If you still want to use that oc, I could make icons of him. Granted, I don't draw equines as well as canines or other things I tend to draw more of, but I'll give it a go! :^) I do have an outside life, so I won't be able to come up with a good amount of icons with various expressions until maybe the weekend, if I get the motivation, but I'll help if you want. I don't have an updated drawing of an equine I can show you, but my dA is Starstar87 if you want to look at my art style.

It took me awhile to figure out what I wanted my OC to be or look like. So what I did was put three of my most favorite Mythical Creatures/Animals together.
Dragon+Cat (every wild feline in the world combined)+Wolf (Dire Wolf)
My niece, said that the name was to long, so I put all three names in a Name Combiner. I searched until I found the perfect name: The Dracatolf!
I wanted everything about my Character to be unique! So after I figured out the name of the species of my OC (I also made my Character the only one of her race for Extra *Uniqueness* ), I had to come up with the design (& dear Celestia that took ages)
Plus I was also helping my Niece with her OC.
So I went for the Body of a Dire Wolf, Wings of a Dragon (not the webbed kind), Retractable Claws of a Feline, Speed + Strength of all 3 combined, Fire powers (my character doesn't breath fire like a normal dragon) and Magic.
Then there was the name and color palette 😑>_
Dudes, I made my OC a phoenix, originally my first OC was a pegasus. BUT I wanted to stand out more in the fandom, so, long behold Jwaly was made! With a enchanted scarf that allows her to talk XD (with her "Cutie mark" on it) So I understand Silver Quill's solution to adding a pony hind quarters to his OC. But What I really think people shy away from non-pony OC's because they consider them a non character or...*Shudders* Pets, so hey, Spikes a "Pet" so why can't I make a phoenix OC! in conclusion, I wanted to share my frustration and sympathy for non-pony OC's.
I think you've confused oc with ponysona. An oc is a "random" character that doesn't really relate to real life. A ponysona is your pony self or somebody else's pony self.

Technically if it’s a character for a story based around a show or game it’s a FAN CHARACTER since it’s not 100% original, since it’s based off a show/game ect

See, this is why I get angry when people hate against Hybrid or Non-Pony OCs. We're just expressing our unique personalities and differences, not to mention displaying much more creativity. There's nothing wrong with them. Some people just don't want to accept that change.

Hm I thought of one OC that I believe hasn't been used at all yet which is a peryton a half deer half bird mythological creature that can be thought of as being good or bad in order for this mythical creature to mate it needs a human heart to do so. So yeah I used that creature as my MLP OC I thought that this would be original and I want to hear your thoughts about my idea?

The Autistic Pony yes and in fact Frankly I prefer a Wolf to that of a pony.. after all I think Dr. Wolf definitely stands out as a defnite unique character who is very unique to the brony Community.. And ya got me sold Dr. Wolf. , (there will be more dogs running around i the brony community soon!).

I have made OCs before, but only for characters in stories I make. I can never seem to find a design or OC character that fits me as a person. With more species, there is more variety, but it is hard to have enough self-reflection to create yourself honestly and completely, especially if you don't really have a developed personality yet. I hate bragging, so it is hard for me to give an OC any of the characteristics of myself that I am proud of. In addition, any flaws that I notice for myself I try to fix, anyway. The only thing left is the personality quirks that make me unique... which are almost impossible to see objectively. Of course, it is not impossible, just really, really hard, and I find myself delaying in actually creating one.
It's like I have to get my cutie mark first before I can make an OC. It's frustrating.
Of course, I'm taking all of this way too seriously. But I can't bring myself to do something this important psychologically this wrong. (except when I tried making OCs when i first started... They weren't abominations, but... ugh... no actual character.

I personally don't watch My Little Pony, but I have nothing against it. This seemed interesting to me, so I watched it. I noticed that during the video you said your OC was a type or Scottish fairy, and that just made me wonder: have you ever heard of a dulahon? It's a type of Celtic fairy that can survive a head. I first heard about them from an anime, and you probably had to look into types of fairies, because, I don't know about how it is wherever you are or with whoever you hang out with, but types of fairies from different nationalities aren't common knowledge where I am. So, it seems to me that you are interested in that sort of thing, so I'm just curious. But don't think you need to answer my question, because I'm not all that important.

I wasn't asking why she didn't use a dullahon. It's just that in my culture types of fairies isn't common knowledge, so if her culture is similar to mine in that sense, that tells me that she did research, which in turn tells me she's interested in the topic of fairies, so I was unsure how many types of fairies she knew of, so I was just wondering if she knew what a dullahon was.

My OC is a Pegasus, BUUUT shes acually a changling. Thats why she gets along with her channeling friend so much, she hardley knows the main six. What she does know about them is that she stops by raritys boutique sometimes to get her mane done and just like everypony else she knows twilight is the princess of friend ship and all that. So shes really just like everypony else aside from the fact shes a changling.

when I was still in primary school, I didn't know much about many sexualities. I wasn't attracted to boys (the norm), yet dated boys only because I thought that it'd be weird if everyone else were getting boyfriends and not me. it wasn't until late year 8 that I realised what asexual/aromantics was, and that I was one.

True. Ahuizotl IS a real creature now and in fact he is based on the mythical Aztec creature called, of course, Ahuizotl. So his species is indeed a viable one to use.
ALso Centaurs, Chimeras, and Gargoyles (Scorpan) Though, what weird me is that Ahuizotl is named after the creature. Which sparks up an enormous mystery towards his character. And in the Daring Do And The Eternal Flower, he's either a demigod/regular mortal, so he's not an immortal creature of sorts. So something is a huge gap right there.

I do think your points are quite true and interesting, but I'll stick with my unicorn OC. I like the magical and uniqueness that a unicorn possesses, I just like the Greek culture that unicorns surround. It's my opinion though :)
Same here. I picked the unicorn species because it fits the best with my personality. Though despite that I've been able to create other original characters of varying races; despite this my one and only OC that represents me will continue to be a unicorn.

I was a unicorn for a year and a half, mostly because back then I thought you could only be a pony. That's until I came across the Equestria Daily poll and saw that Zebra OCs were a thing. Since Zecora was and still is my favorite character in the show, I made my own zebra OC, Firefly.
Holly Martin Eh... not to burst your bubble or anything but... it's Pegasi that CAME from Greek mythology. Unicorns is actually(Whether you choose to believe it or not) points to coming from Indian mythology, no not the North American Indians, although that would be quite hilarious.
This is also the case in one of the first claims of Unicorns existence which was somewhere in Medieval Europe. I know I sound like a madman, but it's true.
Another thing, is that Unicorns, contrary to popular belief, were never thought of to be Magical. That's just the way people thought of them as since they were so "Rare" back then(My guess is around the 14 to 15 hundreds).
Just like how dragons were thought of as deities since they were also rare. But get this, Dragons were REAL. Just not the Western kind...
