Comparing Grocery Prices Five Years Ago to Today (Inflation Is Crazy!)

  • My $50 grocery list in 2019 costs HOW MUCH today?!!
    In this video I'm walking you through an old $50 grocery list from five years ago and comparing those prices to current grocery prices at my local ALDI. Let's just say that inflation is NOT cool. (But there are still ways you can save money on groceries! It just takes a bit more effort.)
    Have you been noticing similar price increases where you live?

    If you look at the increase in ground beef, steak, bacon, eggs, milk, chicken, the price increases are dramatic. My old receipts show these items at half or less than they are now. I wish we had an Aldis here, because I'm not finding these prices to be as good where I am - unless a special sale. Regardless, although some cheap processed items have changed less, most things have increased dramatically. They have also reduced the size of many packaged items. I just bought 5 lb bag potatoes for 4.99. I could find them in 2017 for 99 cents. Eggs could be purchased for 1.00 or less. I'm paying 3-5 dollars now. Ground beef was 99 cents per pound, now 2.99 to 5.99 lb. I could find bacon for 99 cents. Now I'm paying 4.00 to 6.99. Sirloin steak was 2.99 or less; now around 5.99. NY, tri-tip, ribeye steak has doubled and tripled in price -- I'm now paying 10 to 14 dollars a pound for those. When they talk of inflation, they hand pick certain items that have had less increase. Inflation and deflation (paying more for less), hidden fees; added fees to EVERYTHING. The current regime is killing average working americans.

    Almost everything is up 30-50% with some being 100+%. Please don't say something that went up in price 30% isn't a big jump. That is an insane price jump in such a short time. We are being squeezed because they printed so much money to enrich the rich and now the rest of us are all poorer for it.

    • @TheTexMexMom
      @TheTexMexMom  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fair point! I guess when I said that I just meant it wasn’t as much as the items that jumped more than 100%. But yes absolutely 30% across-the-board is a massive amount more that we are spending each year and I know we are all feeling it. :(

    • @TheTexMexMom
      @TheTexMexMom  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      True, that would be an interesting discussion as well! Most people I’ve talked with (myself included) feel like inflation has at the very least canceled out any raises we’ve received.

      @@TheTexMexMom Absolutely. My husband gets a 3% raise each year to pace with inflation, but last year inflation was 3.65, the year before a whopping 8%, and 4.7% in 2021. So he actually makes less now, dollar for dollar, than he was a few years ago. I'm self-employed, but I've been raising my prices every few years with the assumption that I was giving myself a raise. No no, just keeping pace with inflation even though I've raised my prices 40% in 10 years!

    When you factor in smaller quantities and going from store to store to save money, prices have doubled. Tell your boss you need a 100% pay raise..LOL I decided to grow a garden this year from seeds in 15 gallon grow bags and I've got cucumbers, tomatoes, okra, egg plant, cantaloupe, strawberries, jalapeños, bell peppers, dill, basil, zucchini, tomatillos, onions and potatoes. Yeah it's a little work but it's fun and it forces me to eat healthy. Now the economics, there is a little upfront cost but once you have the infrastructure in place ,every year your costs go down to almost zero. I will more than breakeven in the first year alone. Quart mason jars are your friend! BTW Native Texan here, I'm trying to learn piano so if you teach lessons I'd be interested ;-)

    Daaang, where do you live?? Unfortunately our closest store is a Safeway, and their chicken prices are currently like $6/lb! Even at Walmart, it's $4/lb here. It's cheaper to buy beef now, which is crazy. And their store brand eggs are almost $5/dozen--Target has them for about $4/dozen, which is even cheaper than WalMart but that's still INSANE to me that you got two for that price!

    It's good to know what the down-home CPI is. It's the kind of inflation that affects the working class. There is a version called “core CPI” that excludes food and energy, so it's not accounted for when calculating inflation. Housing is also excluded. For most people, these 3 are the top monthly expenses. You are offering valuable insight that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't.

    Lady,you are talking about 5 years difference in price. Yes I agree some things are way out of range. Also alot of these people on here have larger families than then. 5 yrs difference in groceries are not going to stay the same. People are having to buy more groceries because they have alot of kids. Also everybody is buying organic. Which is higher. No wonder their grocery bill is high.

      @@TheTexMexMom it is amazing how people don't change the way they shop when prices change... We reverse meal plan and it has been the best thing for our budget.... We are two adults, eat all meals at home or at least take out lunches from home (dinner leftovers)... People are still buying their wants instead of needs... When people stop buying all the high priced items, prices will change... Right now businesses/companies have no incentive to lower prices because people keep buying the items at the higher prices... Supply and demand people! Stop buying the $2.99 lb chicken breasts... Stock up when they are $1.99 lb... Several stores around the US have them on sale $1.99 lb at least twice a month... Buy the 10 lb of chicken leg quarters... Walmart is $8.72 but usually on sale cheaper a couple times a month... Dried beans, rice, oatmeal... People need to learn to make things instead of buying all the things... Time to find solutions instead of complaining about prices!

    New subscriber from Norway here, and yes the prices has gone up here too. Very interesting to see this kind of comparison. I use coupons and are shopping the sales. I also buy in season and a lot of frozen veggies and berries. I feel I can still get good deals, and I know my prices, but slowly I have had to accept that the cucumbers are over $2 and so on. Cucumbers are never on sale, but say grapes are on sale, but on a higher price than it was as a regular price before. My mental state has shifted and I can say to myself “that was a good price” on something and before I would have thought it was very expensive 😂🤑🫣

    In addition to prices going up, food manufacturers are not only decreasing the size of products (shrinkflation), but many of them are also changing the ingredients to cheaper ingredients to cut costs.
    I was guessing about $150, so that was a nice surprise. Does that seventy some odd dollars include the lettuce you would have bought or was that how much you actually spent? Just curious.

    • @TheTexMexMom
      @TheTexMexMom  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes it does include the lettuce. I honestly was surprised it wasn’t more too, but still it’s a more than 50% increase which is crazy. I’m wondering if I was comparing prices at a store like Kroger if the increases would be even more.
      Also yes, shrinkflation is the worst! So frustrating as a consumer!

      The fact you have had to shift your entire shopping style/choices is the exact point of the video.
