  • Rebuild and repair a power torque motor from an HO scale Tyco Locomotive. The power torque is a pancake motor in a metal housing that is basically a beefed up slot car motor. In this video I show how to disassemble, rebuild with Oxgard and put the motor back into operation.

Great video. The thing that used to irritate me about those Tyco pancake (power torque) motor design, is that tiny pot metal gear that was held in place by some "liquid nails".

Thank you! I've been looking for this exact rebuild.

The motor is a casting, probably 413 aluminum. 413 is nearly the same weight as lead, but much more sturdy. which eliminates adding a weight somewhere else. I would not power brush these surfaces, but cotton swabs and 91% alcohol or an equivalent should do. I do like the OX guard as a good conductor and preservative. Always keeping in mind that we have access to a large number of synthetics that great for a precious little engines. Yes, parts for these are harder to replace. I have been able to get brushes that are slightly oversize, and reduce the diameter and cut them to length. Its unfortunate Tyco made these like they did ( can't change that now). I would like to have seen one of these as a 5 pole motor, maybe some day it will happen. One thing for sure, is that we got a lot of variety engines from them that became a fantasy collection for us. Other makers did the same, just not as much a the big T. I am amazed to think they never got into N scale. Well, if you read all of this; thank you. I will step down from the soapbox now as I am really late in making a comment. BYE

The pancake motors in HO slot cars, were used in Aurora slot cars.

I had one more thought for first timers, if the plastic gears seem frozen, listen them up with light oil

Great video keep up the good work

I was just disturbed a bit. I meant loosen up any old oil or grease by soaking it lightly first. The pins they rotate on can break off the casting.

Yesterday I got a Mantua - Tyco in the mail. Today I rebuilt the motor following this video step by step. It is alive. Thanks. These videos are great. Now I need to find a video to rebuilt another Mantua - Tyco, a Santa Fe that says 5628 on the side. I think its a GP20? It has a motor that's flat and looks to be all metal.

how does one go about replacing broken armatures that you say can be repaired easily. I have a motor that has a broken armature/axle for the large gear. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, great video! Have an old Lifelike that was my Dads with a pancake motor in it that I'm trying to tune up, bought another at train show to have for parts, Decided I was going to get it running as it wasn't running, I'm sure it was opened before . When I put the motor back in (after cleanup) between the magnets, it pulls to one side, does it matter how the magnets are in there, polarity?? Noticed one magnet(right side) has some white on it, and nothing on the other. This is an older video but still very useful to beginners like me

I know this is a bit after your post, but you said something referring to repairing broken gear pins. Care to enlighten me.
