Thanks for taking the time to made video, and yes I dropped the little spacer down into the abyss too. Mine would idle and run slow but stalled when I wanted more rpm.
Update. I have found my motor would run for a minute then stall. Turns out the vent in the fuel cap does not work and would cause a vacuum in the tank. Take apart the cap and find a BLUE rubber plug that stops the vent from working. Pull it out. ALSO. You don't need that fuel pump and it's only another potential problem waiting to happen. Run fuel line from the switch directly to the carb for a gravity feed instead. 👌Works better.

Had one of these on a little crawdad type boat got in a trade like new Ran like a champ day one then ran into issues pulled up a few TH-cam videos and found out the gas left in it messed up the carburetor turned into Jell-O the only way I could get it to run is to spray seafoam directly into the carb got it all cleaned up got it to run OK and traded it off very temperamental. You may want to carry a small Tommyknocker for that float Lol.🇺🇸🍻🤜🏻
Had to put a filter on my generator so small pieces of plastic would stop getting into my carb. New seems to prove they don't make things like they used to.
I have the same motor, and I had the same issue. The fixes you made will help, but you need to adjust the float level. You will need to take it apart again and pull the pin from the float seat. Bend the saddle so it closes the float seat better. It will work properly after that.
Thanks for the tip I ended up just getting frustrated and I was about to sell it but I gave something a try I purchased the 3 1/2 hp to 5 hp conversion kit it basically replaces the carburetor and the prop size but it’ did solve all issues
@@801Outdoors My motor is actually the 2.5hp but it's identical to yours. I have also run my motor on propane, and that works pretty good. Drain the gas from the carb, pull off the vacuum line for the fuel pump and attach your propane supply there. You will need to play with the throttle to adjust your air flow, but it works pretty good.
I have the same motor, and has the same issue. No matter how clean I keep the carb, it will run fine for a while and then DUMP fuel out the overflow as it floods itself out. Very frustrating. Blasting out the jet with carb cleaner always fixes the problem, but it's a pain to get at. From what I'm reading, people are having better luck with (Much cheaper) aftermarket carburetors on this motor. Mine just arrived. $40. If you reply to this comment, I'll make sure to comment back and let you know how it goes with my generic downgrade LOL. The fuel filter is probably the key. Small jet, easily plugged, makes sense. I'm doing both to be safe.
@@Ldubs970 I tried the other carb, and it didn't run right. OK but not right, maybe half throttle. Eventually tried bypassing the fuel pump so it had gravity assist. Did not work. I tried some stuff LOL. Then I learned the real secret. 1. You must never tip it up when the fuel switch is in the ON position. If you do, it will dump fuel. 2. Always run it dry by shutting off the fuel switch and running it till it dies. Since then, it has only done its fuel dump trick on me one time... Actually a great little motor. Just have to know its trick.
That's a nice little motor man I have a 2012 Mercury outboard I bought in wanting 14 Mercury makes a good motor but if those needle valve get plugged that's no bueno. I'll have to do a video on my life horse power Mercury motor for you with a little bit of the backstory from it. Man I like that homemade motor stand I'm going to have to build me something like that
No commentary on the subject but imo all small engines should be strictly run on non-ethanol fuel with a fuel stabilizer additive in every tank. That practice will save you a lot of grief and expense. If the engine has a fuel shut-off then use it to burn all the fuel out of the carb at end of day. If no fuel shut-off then install one.
@@houstone713blastin I've used Stabil 360 marine for years but recently switched to K100 based on test run by Dony73 Small Engines on YT. K100 Label recommends 1/2 oz/gal for regular use and 1 oz/gal for long-term storage. Check your label for the product you use. You can go over just be sure to put at least minimum.
@@Grumpyneanderthal thank you so much I appreciate your knowledge 🙏 I'm new to this and just purchased the 3.5 mercury this weekend. I don't want to run into any problems so going to only run ethanol free gas with additive in every tank.
There is a filter in the fuel line, right next to the fuel cock (shut off) valve and it goes into the larger fuel hose, next to the valve. This filter will clog over time and become a mystery, as to why the Tohatsu 2.5 and 3.5 (rebadged Mercury), has fuel delivery issues.
my 2.5 is guetting me crazy is leaking fuel trough the little hose that comes out in the underside of the cover next to the cooling hose ..dont know what to do i cleaned carburator allready
What is the price of this type of carburetor? is it possible to get a used functional model like this since the new one is quite expensive (I am from Bosnia - Europe)
My 2020 3.5 sputters when I'm out in the water anytime I go close to have speed. I'm guessing it must be carburetor related. Just bought it back in the spring and it's been doing the same thing ever since.
ok here it is ,, i had problems from the get go with this motor and they were all carburetor related, what i did and i'm suggesting you do the same is to buy the kit that turns the 3.5 into a 5 hp when you put that new carburetor on it all your problems will disappear its like having a new outboard. it worked for me go to ready set boat website there like 200 bucks but keep this in mind there is something wrong with the stock carburetor and you have to change it or throw the outboard away
How did that inline filter work out for the summer? I have heard that they can cause priming issues on these small motors... Any issues to speak of? Thanks.
no priming issues but i still have have a issue with the float getting stuck and dumping out all the fuel i just picked up the 3.5 to 5 hp conversion kit and i hope the new carb fixes all this
@@801Outdoors I'm going to stick with the motor for the season but I am kinda getting the sense that this engine is just not built all that well. Bummer

I agree I sold mine it was just to unreliable i just bought a 2023 Honda 5 horse and with fingers crossed I hope I don't have the same issues I had with this boat anchor.
Hi. My air box connected to the carburetor is draining a little bit of oil! I have a 2.5 Mercury 4 stroke. Have you had this happen? What do you think can be the cause? Thanks in advance sir.
There’s a bar that runs from the large motor to the trolling motor and it’s you can disconnect it but when iconnected I’m able to steer the trolling motor by turning the large motor from the steering wheel
Anyone? How do you bleed air bubbles from that style of inline fuel filter? No matter which way I turn mine, while running, or even open ended hose, I can't get the air bubble out. I wouldn't otherwise care, except I think the heat expansion of the air in the afternoon may be the cause of a pesky fuel leak. Done it ever since it was new out of the box.
Are there any adjustments on the carb? I had the same problem, it will idle ok throttle it up will go dead, I can chock it to keep it running. One other thing when mine dumped gas it also got in my oil.
My 2.5 Merc did the same as yours. I changed out the oil, cleaned the carb, put fresh fuel, and tried again with ethanol free fuel. Mine will run for about 30 minutes then stall out flooded again. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the carb under warranty. I still have the same issue. This motor left me stuck on the lake, so once bitten twice shy.
