I still have mine in the attic somewheres...it's an HO but when my parents gave it to me, I was a teenager and had other things on my mine...and yes, it was neat to get it back then...
I'm always happy when manufacturers continue or bring back their old stock like this. A reminder of where the company started. And it's even better when they can make something like a train easy for beginners and children to use.
I just purchased this set from Amazon. This is a nice set! ***Beware*** If you purchase this set from Amazon you will only get a partial Lionel warranty because Amazon is NOT a Lionel authorized dealer, and you probably will NOT be able to have any warranty work done at your local hobby shop, which means you would have to ship it to Lionel for repairs unless you want to pay the full cost yourself.
Very good looking trainset. Born in 1953 I grew up with a 1960 Santa Fe passenger trainset. This video brings back good memorires from when my Dad built in our basement with pleny of lumber and painted cement for the mountains a 3 level mountain tiered layout he started around 1958. It all came down in 1971 when I started college. Thanks for showing. I really like those train sounds the best. Mine only had a horn. I never became a model railroader but Lional rubbed off on me many years later riding all the AMTRAK long distance routes west of St. Louis / Chicago. I can say I rode the route of the Super Chief several times in those 5 weekend to weekend trips.
Thanks for an interesting review Eric. It is amazing how Lionel trains have evolved since the early 1950's when I received my first train set. From plug-in-the-wall transformers to wireless control and digitally sampled diesel horns as compared to the old horn which was basically a tunable buzzer operated by a D cell battery to name a few. Your quick tutorial on changing a traction tire was very informative. This is certainly a great starter set for the money. It's good that you've taken the time to cover this portion of the hobby.
One of my favorite videos from Eric's it really shows how to do some work on the Santa Fe ft Diesel and it shows what's under the hood. This is actually a pretty good set although the engine seems to be a different scale than the cars but that's Lionel, still looks good
Thinking about getting the starter set. Recently got the Thomas Percy starter set. Grandkids loved it. The Bluetooth worked perfectly on my iPhone. Only dislike was the coupling. A minor annoyance. Also, we live in a small condo. After the grandkids left, packed it easily the original box and stored it. Very easy assembly and disassembly.
Honestly when I got this set I was thrilled on Christmas day last year. Was completely unexpected and I have to say for a starter set it is one of the best out there by far. I'm actually really impressed on how loud the speaker is in this engine being a starter engine.
The locomotive is an EMD FT locomotive the F standing for 1400 horsepower and the T standing for twin, the reason why it has twin in the designations is because these units had a permanently coupled B unit with the A units.
Eric does a great review here. also he shows you a little bit of the maintenance on this train. the fact that this train is maintainable, and the way the trucks are geared, was a selling point for me.

I have the 1948 first run Lionel Santa FE Chief with the early passenger cars. The aluminum cars were not stored properly, they were wet in a soaked carboard box, sent to me as is. I got them on the cheap, they weren't dented / banged up at all, dirty and rust, took trhem apart, and cleaned on them for a couple of months, cleaned and repainted the the gray parts, now sits static on the selves.
Eric, you deserve much more than 34k subscribers. Your videos are amazingly detailed and fun and enjoyable to watch. Also I’d like another Eric’s trains live episode, because you haven’t made one in almost a year and it’s cool to see you live. Also, are people just allowed to come to visit your layout at any time of the year? (Planned ahead of time of course.)

Hi Eric! Because of this model, i was considering o but due to lack of space i had to go ho. Though I'm happy with my layout, o is still my second favorite scale
Hello Eric, I’m just starting out with Trains and I do know the difference between the starter sets and the the good stuff, most of the engines I bought Legacy. What’s your thought on the cars themselves?
Great review! I just got this set, been running it for a few weeks and the front truck has a bit of wobble to it. Curious if anyone has ever experienced that? Traction tires seem ok on the front truck.
Eric, what is the most realistic HO scale EMD FP45? Athern told me they are not making the blue box line anymore, so what is their top line products now? Thankx
I’ve found that you can run these on a legacy system. You just turn the track Power to 18v then just use the remote provided with the kit. That simple.
That is the Lionel Norfolk & Western SD45 #1776, although he already did a review of the Union Pacific version not too long ago, so it probably isn’t a high priority locomotive to review, but I hope he does since I’m a fan of that engine too.
I remember a long time ago getting one of these on Christmas morning. It was the best Christmas ever!
Switchpoint Productions do you still have it
I still have mine in the attic somewheres...it's an HO but when my parents gave it to me, I was a teenager and had other things on my mine...and yes, it was neat to get it back then...

I remember just getting my first ever model train on Christmas. I went nuts.
That almost looks like the one from superman movie

Best reviewer of O-scale trains and related items.

One of the best starter sets Lionel makes in my opinion.
Alot more fun than my 1950 set..My grandchild plays with the 2018 set more than the 1950 set.
This model is BEAUTIFUL!!!!

That looks awesome, I am going to buy a Lionel Santa Fe Super Chief in a few months to go along with my other two trains.

I'm getting this set for my birthday along with some extra track and the add on baggage car and dome car.
What a nice review. Also it bring back memories from the 50's. Thanks Eric
Great video as always Eric. Keep up the great work
This was quite an excellent review!
They need to sell a dummy A unit for this set
I love this set I have it. It runs great on my traditional layout
I just got that set today for Christmas, and it’s awesome.
was already sold on it the new lionel sets look so nice i still got my grandfathers Marklin post war wind up train set with the cars and track
I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work!
Awesome set! Love the finish on the passenger cars!
Matt when are we going to head to that pizza and wing place near town? Let me know

My father in law gave me the vintage version of this model that he has had for decades. It's not currently set or running but maybe soon.
As much as I love Lionchief, MAN do I miss the old Transformer days
Me too and the classic air whistle
Looks like an incredible ready to run set! Might have to buy myself one
What's the difference between the 157 and 159
Very nice , sounds like Tom Hanks on the crew talk .
Wow - this is a surprisingly nice set, well done Eric.
2019 catalog is really nice. I just ordered the Gold Bonnet set. I’m super excited to get it. Hopefully the Q4 delivery date will hold true.
Pretty nice set you have there, you was running it pretty good too 😊😊
Hi I was wondering will you do a comparison and a review of the lion master big boy when it comes out
I was also wondering that because it looks really cool
me too
Nice train set
This is a really cool video and a really cool passenger train please make more videos soon
Eric you are train jesus. it's like you have every train I've wanted.
And can't afford. :(
loved to see the inside components on the locomotive
WOW with that vision line set!!!
Could you do a video for Lionel legacy beginners? Like what is a good locomotive to start out with and how to build a beginner layout.
Correct me if I am wrong, but he may have already done something like that. It was either with Legacy or DCS.
TrainfanJackson4023 oh I didn’t know he already did one
th-cam.com/video/qcC4cla70IQ/w-d-xo.html great question 👍🏻👍🏻😊May I recommend a beautiful Disneyland and train youtuber I stumbled upon and love 😊Eric Ramirez ❤️channel full of love and joy 😊you might enjoy
I love the look of your layout, although I haven't seen all of it.
Maravilloso tren 😍
Eric- very nice review (as always!!}😀- Your showing the BlueTooth App was also very well done; step by step as you did your explanation was perfect !! - Carl J
Great video. Nice started set.
Excellent video review. Thank you.
This would be great if lionel made this in their ho scale line up
18:51, Sounds like my Old Tonka Truck Horn. This is a Beautiful TrainSet.
You know I'm not a like model railroaded but all of my layout is lion chief and Lion chief plus
Will you be doing a lion chef plus 2.0 video when they come out this year ?
Great review Eric!
Nice set Eric!!
Hey Eric! For you're next video, could you do a review on the lionchief B.N.S.F. tier 4 Gevo set?
that was a good and helpful video ,, changing the traction tire ,,
Glad I watched this. Finally understand what that small black rubber ring is for ! Why doesn’t Lionel say they are replacement traction rings ?!?!
I wish you can still see this locomotive nowadays in 2021
Hi, there is something that I would like to see in your reviews. That is when you run the train, it would be nice to have the room lights on and off.
Jake V I do that sometimes, just not all the time.
I have a question can you run those PFE reefers on a Lionchief layout
Very good review, Thanks.
*Never too old for Trains!*
When you run trains in reviews, can we get a shot of the train going across the drawbridge?
that's a tough shot to get, that's why i don't do it often.
ericstrains
Ah, ok. That's understandable.
One feature missed on the passenger cars is to have the roof open on a hinge so that passengers can be added and removed at each station stop.
How hard is it to add passengers to these cars ?
I was wondering what that round spare part was that looked like a washer. It was the tire. Thanks. Couldn’t find it in the manual.
Hi Eric! Because of this model, i was considering o but due to lack of space i had to go ho. Though I'm happy with my layout, o is still my second favorite scale
There is a store up in Pennsylvania called Henning’s Trains
They also have the add-on cars that is the baggage car and the dome car
Great Job On The Video.
thats as fast as I've ever seen you run a train on your layout. more of this! speed is a crowd pleaser lol.
Man, my first Lionel train set was essentially this one, but the coach cars had a different paint scheme and it wasn't a Lionchief set.
Was it the el captain?
@@joedaylight It was.
@@OwlEye2010 same here
Hello Eric, I’m just starting out with Trains and I do know the difference between the starter sets and the the good stuff, most of the engines I bought Legacy. What’s your thought on the cars themselves?
Just curious, how fast was you running it, looked pretty fast & pretty cool too 😊😊
Does anyone know whether there is a way to reduce the volume of the engine sound without turning it off entirely?
Roger Metzger the procedure for adjusting the volume is detailed in the instruction manual
Does anyone know if lionel is going to make the B and A unit for this set?
will an old texas special from the 60's run on the new track and vice versa
Do a vid on the pre war torpedo. I recently got one and a video on maintenance could really help out a lot of owners
Well done review.
What would be the next higher level of Lionel Sante Fe that would have "smoke" ? Would this be a set or by purchasing individual pieces. Thank you.
Very nice set
Great review! I just got this set, been running it for a few weeks and the front truck has a bit of wobble to it. Curious if anyone has ever experienced that? Traction tires seem ok on the front truck.
Who makes high quality version of this Santa Fe train in O scale?
Eric, what is the most realistic HO scale EMD FP45? Athern told me they are not making the blue box line anymore, so what is their top line products now? Thankx
did you know that your 4-12-2 number 9000 in real life is actually being restored
Great video.
What do I need to do to run this on a legacy controlled system?
I’ve found that you can run these on a legacy system. You just turn the track Power to 18v then just use the remote provided with the kit. That simple.
Can you run it with a regular transformer as well?? Like the big black one??
Do they make a dummy A or B engine to go with it?
You can add to these sets over time.
I have the set and I really like it but I did not get a lien remote with it the lien remote control with it what do I do about that
Great video Eric as usual and just a question I am wondering do you have any crossing gates's on your layout
6️⃣0️⃣3️⃣🚂😎. 🚂❤️🚂❤️🚂❤️ I think that’s going to be my next train 🚂
Looks good. Interesting that there are no flywheels on the motors.
Hey Eric! How did you get the shell (and cords/circuitboards) 100% completely detached from the engine?
Wow I did not expect this review.👍
Nice set! I have the exact same set too!

If you haven’t reviewed that blue and red engine yet please do, and if you have would you please provide me with a link, thank you
That is the Lionel Norfolk & Western SD45 #1776, although he already did a review of the Union Pacific version not too long ago, so it probably isn’t a high priority locomotive to review, but I hope he does since I’m a fan of that engine too.
Could you do a review of the frisco meteor 4500? This is a steam engine that is one of my favorites
I noticed that the new Lionel locos don't have the groove on the wheels like the MPC ones do.
