  • Dave Murray is a legend! in addition to actually being the only guitarist who stayed with Iron Maiden through all of the band’s albums!
    So what we can do today is take a look at some of the isolated guitar solos by Dave, see how they sound without Adrian’s and Janick’s parts, and then discuss a little something about his playing style overall, answering the question of whether Dave Murray is actually that great... Spoiler: HE IS!!!
    00:00 - Intro
    00:19 - Let's hear it
    05:40 - Absolute champion
    06:29- Standing still? No, thanks

      Are you a guitar player? No offense. But, I couldn't disagree more. He's mediocre, sloppy, and really not all that fast. He hides behind using his neck pickup - as it hides his sloppiness and it's hard to really hear what he's doing.

Also, his live solos over the last decade or so seem to lack a bit of creativity and variety. But in no way is he a mediocre player or sloppy. His legato paying is smooth and instantly recognisable. He’s not sloppy at all. Arguably because he stays well within his comfort zone with his playing (which I guess you could say is a negative). Great player

    The thing I've always found the most impressive about Maiden, isn't any one man's efforts, but how expertly they layer the guitars. It's never too much. Timing and space between parts of solos, gives the songs a depth that few bands can rival. Martin Birch was a mastermind.

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agreed. Maybe that's why the solos never really stood out to me with Maiden songs because they may have be mixed to not stand out, but to be like an additional rhythm part of the song.

    • @andrewbecker3700
      @andrewbecker3700 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@mattm7798 The style they favor, rotates guitar lead parts almost continuously. This gives the songs complexity without overindulgence. If all the guitarists in multi guitar bands start battling it out for who's lead part should be the main focus of the song, you'd never end up with any songs over 3 minutes long. "Ryme Of The Ancient Mariner" epitomizes this this style of composition. It's my all time favorite Maiden track.

    My favorite Dave solo comes in Caught Somewhere in Time. Like an out of control run away train, that speedy beginning is perfectly built in after the first chorus. Not a comment about Dave’s playing…which is fabulous.
    Back on the Seventh Son tour, saw them on their last US date in Hampton VA. Had a female friend who, ahem, managed to get full access backstage passes. (She had actually travelled with the band/entourage from the show the night before…that’s all I know and all I wanted to know!). After attending the usual meet & greet with all the other folks w limited backstage passes, she led me to the dressing room which was two large-ish connected rooms. Lots of people in there, lots of alcohol, some food. Bruce was pissed off about something, don’t remember what, and had retired to the tour bus. My take on the rest of the band and the rest of that night:
    Steve was truly kind and made you feel like he was interested in whatever it was you were saying. He also came across as wickedly smart.
    Nicko was a hoot. He was drinking and having a helluva good time. Seemed to be the life of the party.
    Dave was already pretty smashed by the time I got to speak with him. He was very cool, but I didn’t get to talk with him until later in the night…largely because:
    I spent about an hour or so sitting on a couch bullshitting with Adrian. I am a guitarist as well. So Adrian and I started talking and we ended up talking about gear and guitars. It was pretty in depth about tone and settings and technique, and how it all ties together. Early on, I tried to be polite and not monopolize his time and beg off, but he said, “No this is cool, I don’t get to have conversations like this at these things very often.” So the two of us sat there with a couple of adult beverages in hand and just BS’d about the guitar.
    It was an amazing night!

    The retained takes always were those with the most dynamics over the few little noises or "mistakes".
    Soul before technic (and don't make me wrong, the technic is really high). Merry Christmas to all and Happy Birthday Dave !
    Fav solo ? Too hard to choose. "Be Quick or Be Dead" isn't mentioned here so I take this one, speed, fluid, crazy...

    I used to crank the solos from Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (Somewhere in Time) on my cheap Walkman back in the 80's...such great playing from Adrian and Dave on that album. I always liked how that track was a little odd, but those solos always seemed to soar through my soul, and they always held a special place in my heart. I wore out my cassette of Somewhere in Time and it was the first CD I ever bought...almost 40 years later I still have it. Thank you Dave!

      I think that most people see Iron Maiden guitarists... and Judas Priest guitarists as well, as a whole. Meaning they don't distinguish much between Dave, Adrian and Janick and simply view them as a unit

      @@MetalPilgrim Well that is another truth - that the twin guitars of Maiden *are* a unit that make their sound what it is. Just like Moody and Marsden or Tipton and Downing.

    He is not most tecnical, but his style is very iconic. It's very easy to recognise, almost as a vocalist is easy to recognise.

    I can listen to most of maidens songs and tell you who is playing what as far as solo's go. Adrian is more thought out and planned and Dave is does alot off the cuff. Both are truly amazing and together they are such a compliment to each other, but it is easy to tell dave just by the way its played. He really is an awesome player and musician.

    I played Dave in an Iron Maiden tribute band from 2013-2018. My favourite solos to play live were Powerslave, Fear of the Dark and Phantom of the Opera. Most fun song - Hallowed Be Thy Name. His solos and sound always somehow are (at least to me) so full of blood and horror!!! And he is so unique, although it doesn't seems like it is something special. But he is ! He is secret weapon of Maiden's sound!!! We allways thought it's Steve's bass and his way of making Maiden's unique sound. And of course it is, but Dave's way of playing is that what on Steve's basis gives the right shape!!!

    My favourite solo is on the song Powerslave, it was also quite genius how the whole band captured an Egyptian sound style within a Heavy Metal Band, even the rhythm guitar behind it sounds Egyptian, how they did that I can only conclude one of them had a past life of that time, Best album by far.

      The sond was written by Bruce Dickinson.
      The song uses harmonic minor and diminished scales.
      That's the classical arabic sound.
      Also the slide octaves given open arabic feel.

    • @MyammiRose
      @MyammiRose 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rockzilla5150 Yes its genius how they made the whole song sound like that even the rhythm guitars behind the solo, I just love how they did it I can never get bored of it, I knew it was some kind of scale and may not have anything to do with past lives,...but who knows with what inspired them to write such a great song, and very thought provoking. :)

    Dave's solos are like little compositions of music within the song. CSIT solo is a masterpiece in and of itself IMO. It is super complex, with no erroneous notes, they have to land on the right chords at the exact time or the whole solo is off. Tremendous musicianship right there.
