New wrencher and XJ owner here. My brother, without this video, I would not have had the ability or the confidence to tackle this project. THANK YOU so much, this video was beyond helpful. If we ever cross paths, I've got a beer with your name on it. Thanks again, Jordan
Just finished this job following your directions. Great video - only thing to add is that there are 9 bolts plus 2 nuts holding the manifolds on for a total of 11 fasteners , not 10 as you say in the vid. You should also mention getting the lower manifold bolts in is quite the PIA. Thanks again for posting this
Man this is a great video. I appreciate you putting this content out there. I bought my son a cash XJ and of course there have been issues. With this I got the freeze plugs swapped out in about half a Saturday. Thanks!
You might be able to get away with that, just make sure to clean the surface off good and make sure it cures before you start up the vehicle. Not the ideal fix but it may work in a pinch.
Well, today my jb weld patched freeze plug started leaking in a different place. So I'm back to your video. Lol also just changed out the water pump this weekend. Thanks again gor the no BS video. Straight to the point.
If your belt tenisoner is different there 3 types Old style is off the power steering pump its a pain Newer style as video shows Newest style sonething to fo with alternator and I believe your alternator is on top I only saw one of theses motors in wrecking yard I think it's 98 and up not sure on that one
@@OutJeeping thanks for the reply. Turns out I might have enough room to access the freeze plug by simply removing the air box. Going to try and swap it out tomorrow. Hoping for the best but ready to tear things down if needed.
@@teamfreddy5945 Just make sure you have enough room to pound in the new plug straight otherwise it will be a headache. Even with everything off like what I had, installing the plug by the motor mount was a pita.
@@OutJeeping Knocked it out over the weekend. we ended up removing the manifolds out the way to insert the freeze plug. Pressure tested and replaced it 2 more times until we confirmed no pinhole leaks. Peace of mind knowing the car has all new gaskets, held pressure and was able to put a few miles on it with no issues. Now to get it though emissions. :)
well that's a HELL of a lot of work for just some freeze plugs :P - too bad the manufacturer didn't find a more burly alternative that wouldn't need service
Hi, I replaced the freeze plugs very easily with this video but one of the plugs keeps popping out when I drive it a little fast on the hwy. I think pressure builds up and pushes it out. Any idea what this problem might be? Thank you
Like why is it called a freeze plug? They can also be called expansion plugs too but the reason for that is like a secondary problem solution from its original intention. The primary reason for them is to get the casting sand out of the block when they are making the block. But a secondary solution would be if water were to ever freeze in the engine block that it would pop out the plugs before cracking the block.

Glad I could help!
This job is certainly a ball buster but this video definitely helped. I was even able to get a brass plug in the second hole! Thanks for sharing this.
I want to Thank You for this video. I watched this and it provided enough detail for me to do the job.

Permatex no. 1 or Indian Head shellac on the freeze plugs. Make sure the holes are grease free.
First time doing mine and I feel like this helped me understand a lot. Thanks!
Awesome video, thank you sir for taking the time to make this very informative video. This video was extremely helpful for me.
Def going to tackle this asap. First time doing freeze plugs.

It’s been a while since you posted I enjoy your videos I own 2 Jeeps 🚙 myself
Yeah its hard to keep up with videos while being in college but I'm trying my best. Thanks for the support!
want to own 3 ? FOR SALE!
Who was the manufacturer of that block heater I also live in Illinois and it gets cold
This is awesome. Thank you so much.
What year is this jeep? Thanks for the video!
The one in the video is a 2001
Hey i have a chevy trailblazer 4.2 vortec do you think the freeze plugs are the same as yours or different cause i cant find them anywhere online
I would have no idea. Jeep engines and Chevy engines are 2 completely different things.
What other parts need it besides intake manifold gasket and exhaust donut??
That's pretty much all you need and some coolant.
@@OutJeeping you were right got it done already..good job on the video !👍
What is the water's coming between the engine and transmission what is the problem there because the freeze plugs are not leaking
Do you have any idea why the water would be dripping down between the engine and transmission because I have no idea
@@JohnMoore-gl3dq It could be a head gasket leak at the back or a freeze plug on the back of the engine.
Good video man!
Great video very thorough
Nice to see another offroad channel! I just subbed and looking forward to more videos. I have an offroad channel too, where are you from?
Ben Kraus Cool, thanks for the support! I'm from Wisconsin.
OutJeeping I’m from Wisconsin too, where about are you?
I'm from the Oconomowoc area.
Do you guys know what size 2001 jeep xj freeze plug size
I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport with a 4.0 and just did mine. I bought Dorman 565069 Brass plugs which are 2” and they worked perfectly.
What size are the replacement plugs?
If I have a leaking freeze plug....Can I just patch it with JB WELD untill winter is over with?
You might be able to get away with that, just make sure to clean the surface off good and make sure it cures before you start up the vehicle. Not the ideal fix but it may work in a pinch.
I hour of run time so far at 190 operating temp and no leak so far.

That was a great video is it the same on a WJ?
If the WJ has a 4.0L then it should be identical.
What I meant was the same disassembling of all the exact parts and manifold and exhaust that's what I meant I should have been more clear thanks.
Can leaking rear freeze plugs cause coolant in oil?
They can not, they only result in coolant leaking to the outside of the engine when they go bad.
If your belt tenisoner is different there 3 types
Old style is off the power steering pump its a pain
Newer style as video shows
Newest style sonething to fo with alternator and I believe your alternator is on top I only saw one of theses motors in wrecking yard I think it's 98 and up not sure on that one
How long did it take to replace the freeze plugs?
Depends if you are changing anything else. I'd say 4-5 hours. Took me a couple afternoons because I also changed the head gasket.

You might not have that plug installed nice and square with the block. They can be difficult to install while the engine is still in the vehicle.
@@OutJeeping thank you
jeez can't you reach around and just leave the exhaust in place?

What don’t u dam mechanics tell us what size the shit is been sitting here for 20 mins trying to get the exhaust off and can’t find the dam size
If you can't figure out how to size up a bolt then maybe working on vehicles is not for you.
