    Omak Lake is one of the best lakes in the Pacific Northwest to target Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. It was formerly a destination visited by many anglers who often enjoyed great success catching many of the lake's large trout. However, in recent years participation and use of this fishery has declined dramatically. What happened?

    My time working for WDFW I quickly realized most anglers i encountered were middle class and well below. The raising of license and fees have had a profound impact on them. (Let alone the big increase in the cost of tackle)!
    Ive been personally very critical of both Oregon and Washington in their approach. Seems like they are biting the hands that feed them. Anglers are getting fee'd to death.
    Compare what fishing license cost in the midwest like Missouri. We pay 4-10 times here and they seem to have as good or much better managed fisheries.
    Thank you for bringing this topic to light. Whether it be public, tribal or private.

      But the subject is about charging high fees which are diminishing opportunities for budget conscious anglers. I added my experiences with the State agencies to basically agree with the premise of the video. I don't "Hate" WDFW, ODFW or the Tribes. They all do somethings good.
      But I don't agree with the increases in fees, licensing etc. I have a glovebox full of passes just to allow me to recreate on Public Lands. Add in all the licensing, launch fees etc. your unfortunately pricing a lot of people out. Just like Tyler pointed out in this video.
      It's unfortunately trend on all lands in the Northwest.
      I agree with Tyler, what's the purpose of the large price increases on Omak? Certainly not to promote more angling opportunities.

    Welcome to the Okanogan, was surprised to hear you came to the area. You pretty much hit the nail on the head, don't think the Tribe wants us on the Res so are making the cost out of reach for so many. Came back from Spokane with the new boat and thought about Omak Lake as we went by, no longer. Being raised in the Methow, if it wasn't trout or Salmon it wasn't worth catching, so after many decades I have gotten an interest in Walleye and Koknaee. Came across your videos last year and am learning from your very informative videos. Working outfitting the new boat and will be trying places like Conconully and Spectacle. Who knows, may run into you some time, would enjoy talking to you.

They shutdown the res to all non tribal members and then raised they prices 150% saying it would only be for the equivalent time the res was closed. Here we are way passed that time frame and they never lowered prices. They also got rid of their season pass.

    Here is a thought offered up - not in hostility but in the spirit of thinking differently about a lake fished rarely. There is value in fishing in solitude, nothing wrong with allowing some fisheries to remain or descend into providing that experience for anglers. There is also value and adventure in earning the benefits of a prized fishery through self-discovery - without the aid of a screen or the inter-web. This is getting harder and harder to find and/or accomplish. Many of the places I once loved to fish because they provided these benefits and experiences are now gone. Something to think about.

    Our Fish and Game commissioner is appointment by the Governor. And we all know where he stands on fishing and hunting. The WDFW is currently being sued for not adhering to their charter of promoting fishing and hunting opportunities. Instead they are dismantling or eliminating seasons, driving up prices, and closing access. Riffe Lake and Alder Lake access and the elimination of last years Spring Bear hunt are only a couple prime examples of their preservation over conservation mentality. Soon only the wealthy will be able to afford our sports, just like it is in Europe and although this lake is managed by the tribe, the direction is similar to that of the State. Nice video.

In my neck of the woods, they privatized a massive fishery Lake Simcoe, I believe biggest fresh water ice fishing fishery in North America, by charging heavily for parking. Hi fees are often used to cut down traffic. However, good news is where there is a will, there is a way, at least in North America one can still find some decent water with effort.

    Fishing is so expensive now that it really isn't worth doing unless you have easy and cheap access to certain locations. Fishing is becoming more of a luxury if you want to travel to better places to catch fish. Some folks enjoy catching and eating fish, but the ones that do it don't care what you think. You won't see them posting anything and they have their honey holes. Catfish are the way to go because there are usually no rules or limits in most places.

  • @MrKoobuh

    Pricing the average person out has no downside for fisheries managers, it reduces fishing pressure and human presence on the waters, and allows the few people who don't care what it costs to have a more pleasant time recreating. Much like trophy hunting in the west, fishing in Washington is quickly accelerating toward the only-the-affluent-need-apply model. Same model in Whatcom county, restricting power boats and adding layers of cost to boating through AIS inspection fees, to reduce the number of users and allow the landowners on the lake to enjoy it more fully.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well this is the tribes not Washington state. They have tried to increase our fishing license costs but the legislature blocked it. We have no AIS inspection in this state nor fees associated with it but that great liberal bastion of Idaho does!

    • @Fishin4funout4trout
      @Fishin4funout4trout ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice video, but, uhm... How did they get Lahontan cutthroat trout in Washington? They used to only exist in two lakes in the world - both of which are in Nevada, and those being the two remnants of ancient Lake Lahontan - Pyramid Lake and Walker Lake. Walker Lake no longer has enough water to keep the salinity level low enough to support fish due to the tribe in Shurz, Nevada's greed.
      How did Lahontan's get in Washington? Did the tribe up there buy some from the Pyramid Lake tribe and ship them all the way up there?

      What value is in it for the average human to pursue fishing in 2023?
      Just to say I caught a master angler fish and apply to the dnr to grt another master angler patch?
      Starting in 2023 the dnr is making hunters in michigan pay $8.00 per patch for successful hunters. Most of the deer are sick with end etc designed rendering it useless to eat. Or if you do eat it it could kill you. Come quickly Jesus the deamoncrats in high places are killing our society and thinking they can hide in bunkers while everyone else gets nuked and radiated. Then come out in 10 years and restart the populations.

It's listed on the WA department of game site under fish records.

    Once anglers find out a spot is shut down….. they won’t come back till they learn it’s open. Everyone probably thinks it’s still closed. We had this effect happen turning away business when the deer processing filled up. They won’t ever come back and they tell all their friends not to go there cause it’s full, for ever. They don’t realize we will process what we got and take deer again soon.

And even when they allowed non-tribal members, which was rare and poorly posted. it requires a Tribal Permit which is over $30 now and going up again I hear.
