I think you’re draft to get rid of such a nice example. I’d at least get the rocker covers off and have a closer look at that lifter. Wouldn’t take much time and effort to do. As for working on the V8, they’re mechanically quite simple and should be no more daunting to work on than the 4 cylinder models.
Understand your lack of a proper space to do any in-depth work but if you get the rocker covers off first you might find that a major rebuild is unnecessary.
Also, this would provide some good footage and even if you still intend to sell it on, you might get a better price for it if you have a better idea of the condition of the engine.

One of the most popular and well-regarded oils from the golden days of British motoring was Duckhams 20W-50 mineral oil (no synthetic in those days) which was always discernible by its green colour. The Halfords oil is either dyed green as a homage to those long lost days or, more likely, it is manufactured for Halfords by Duckhams themselves.

The best things about the UK: Begins with "P" and ends with "UB" also oil in a tin can instead of plastic. You know where you are in life in the scheme of things, but hate to see you get rid of a nice car that you could enjoy. I did live in England for three years and I know how hard it is to find a nice older car there. The lifter could still clear itself when you drive it with some clean detergent oil in it. Look forward to future videos and thanks for posting.

That oil looks like one of those trendy green smoothies but it's probably cheaper! Great video. David makes me laugh. It would be cool to get a mini.

Sticky lifters are very common with a V8 that is left and not driven. I had a sticky lifter on my V8 - I used some Tecsol but they are long gone. Try some Liqui-moly Lifter Additive drop it into the oil and run the engine for 25-50 miles, get it warm, then see what the pressure is. If the pressure is in range - drive it. V8's have to be driven. That engine, if it starts, is one tough MF. If the gearbox is good, the engine is great. Drive it.

Don't throw the old oil away, paint your fence/shed with it. My shed is 23 years old and only painted in used engine oil all these years 😊

I’ve been admiring your new P6 in the latest videos, looks like a very clean example you’ve got there…although perhaps not the best engine!
I’ve been giving it some thought. I’m no mechanic, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt, however I am an engineer.
You showed that the carbs had been out of sync and that linkage had effectively been providing much less fuel to one bank of cylinders? I’m thinking this would surely run four pistons very lean, resulting in increased temperature on those four. When you did the compression test you struggled to get half the spark plugs out - were they all down the same bank of cylinders? Suggests to you’d want to replace the head if it’s warped and perhaps a rebore and engine rebuild. I appreciate it would be a huge initial outlay but if the car has a good superstructure under those panels then it will be a worthwhile investment.
Having shopped around for P6s, it seems to me that the truly clean cars (which don’t require extensive welding and restoration) are few and far between. Arguably the coveted Rover V8 under the bonnet is the cheapest, most readily available part of the car. Plus you could make some excellent content covering the rebuild 👨🏻‍🔧
Loving the new videos, thank you as always!

Tip for pouring oil from a full can... turn the can over so the spout is at the 'top' edge.. it lets the air in and doesn't glug everywhere.
    Thanks for the video.

If you don't have the P6..What will you use for content? Passing the driving test and being able to actually drive these cars should be a priority I think

Hi Sheldon. Best way to change the V8 oil is to get it warm first. Then, take the filter off from underneath, far better access. Clean the pump face, and almost fill the new filter with oil and smear a little on the seal before fitting. Hand tighten, plus a bit more twist is enough, then drain the old oil. David should throw that blue handle away and keep the chain. Get an old 1/2" drive, big chunkysize, long reach socket Drill a hole through it, half way down the length, just big enough to pass the chain through and make it into a permanent loop. You can then slip the chain loop around the filter and use a ratchet and extension to twit it to grip. You can buy a similar tool, but home made is much cheaper.

I once had to change the oil filter on a 2007 VW Beetle. I tried almost everything including the screwdriver method but it wouldn't budge. In the end I got it off with a chain wrench.

Thanks Sheldon for making some great videos about hour car journey. I did hope You would keep the rover, because You have been jumping between many cars. But it is good to think about the ecconemy. But I do think You must think about to have a base, a workshop before You buy an other car. Because else You would have the same problem over and over again.

The car needs a garage if it is to last. That is true for any that you buy and try and maintain. Make a plan for that and all then becomes possible. Rather than a Mini an 1100/1300 may be better (Mini's very susceptible to being stolen) ? Same powetrain and if you cant fix an A series you aint trying 🙂. Good luck.

I know David is a good friend but the poor chap has been working in the rain , changing brake pipes , callipers, now changing oil filter and draining oil , in a previous video you said about his health , I’m sure you will say he enjoys it but give a thought to him he’s a lovely fella , you are now saying you are thinking of selling it , hope the chap you got it from has been paid or his mother not sure who you said owned it .best of luck for the future and hope your health improves

Some moron must have tightened the filter with a tool ,smear oil on the rubber seal and hand tight only, I'd take it for a good run when the weather gets warmer then dump it again, also you would be advised to put zinc additive in it, have fun stay safe👍

hydronic lifters usually run on a much thinner oil.
try flushing it and try 5-30w you may be surprised.

    • @leonardgoldberg2879
      @leonardgoldberg2879 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That engine was never designed for such thin oil. Back in the 70's most cars ran on 20w-50. The thinnest i would run is 10w-40 mineral.

      NEVER RUN A ROVER V8 ON 5/30. 20W/50 minimum.

Feck me that oil filter a piece of piss to get too!! Should try some the truly bloody awful positions manufacturers stick them now, if you haven't got the right specific oil filter tool to do job then you're stuck.
Also good to know a Ford Motorcraft belt will fit a V8 Rover engine. 😂😂
Duckems Oil is also green so the customer could check that they had actually been charged or know they had had Duckems oil used. Not actually sure if that's true but still. 😂
