How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Nice combine really fast. I hope all of the farming community says a prayer for the Detwiler family on the loss of a great man. Andy was one of a kind and he will surely be missed RIP Harmless Farmer

Not surprising you didn't get a demo cart with all the shortages of equipment and materials. Why not just get the 2 trailers setup without a new big red. So while you are delivering , the new trailers are at the farm being filled, when you comeback disconnect the empty trailers and take the full ones to the elevator

The 9770 will speed up harvest quite a bit, it is a big step up from the 9510😉👍 I'm looking forward to see more harvest videos this fall, hopefully harvest 22 will be awesome!😁👍

The 9770 is a beauty and that 30 foot header looks giant. The size is enhanced by the slo mo; especially the aerial showing the trash blasting. Nice editing.

I know a lot of big league guys who run 10-20 years behind the latest and greatest. My theory is I can afford stuff once I can buy it without getting in to debt up to my eyeballs.
It’s a 30ft head on a class 7 combine push that stick forward and give er the beans
You can’t go down the path of having a demo piece of equipment make or break you. You have to keep it in the “ it’s nice to have” category.
I really like your "Have a Nice Day" sign. People need to chill around farm equipment in the fall. Don't be afraid to take your half of the highway out of the left side, I have seen two too many accidents with vehicles overtaking while the tractor is turning left. In closing, have a nice day and safe harvest.
We were seeing issues with our 9770 when it comes to capacity. Don’t be afraid to run that machine faster to keep the rotor full for better cleaning
The contour style farming you guys do makes for some beautiful aerial shots. Especially in the spring and summer but it looks cool even when everything is brown. Lol 😂

What's the purpose of the little auger in the hopper?
Sure put in a good plug for a grain cart to get someone to sponsor one
If all goes well with that combine, you'll probably have it for at least the next 15 years. Those few perks will make harvesting easier. Travis's comment about how fast the beans get up into the grain elevator shows how much more capacity. A truck for you has made you less reliant on others.
Keep an eye on those front dual rims. Watch for any cracking around the bolts.

Oct 5. I just cleaned off and tucked away my 9770 STS for the winter. You're just starting. What a difference a few thousand miles makes.
It's like us here. My neighbor just got a semi setup. Now local coops for us are closing altoona and bondurant bc they are to old and we are having to travel longer distances for beans. That is why he got a truck I'm guessing.
Another thing. My uncle has two volvo trucks he farms with. One grain cart just upgraded to a brent v1100 from 874 brent. We now have s670 from a 9660. 630fd and 608c.
Do u plan on baling any soybean or corn stubble this fall for your cows or to sell at auction come winter?
Definitely going to be baling corn stalks and try wrapping them!
Hi Ryan do you have to change plates for soybeans or can you just use 1 size for both corn and soybeans? I'm asking because I don't know thanks and is it hard to change them out? Great to see you guys starting Harvest on such a Beautiful day!
100% add the truck, the cart's were outpacing the rest of the operation. Similar with a bigger combine, it's usually more efficient to run a hair slower. We've had guys in the combine push as hard as they can and end up sitting because the farms trucking away from the field couldn't keep up.

Question.... what was the idea behind a 900 series grain head over a 600 series ?

When you get into corn, two trucks will slow down harvest. I have two making a 7 to 11 mile quick dump into a 2 thousand bu pit and have to slow the combine to 3,000 bu/hr or stop with cab corn often! Much less than when the 9600 was the big John Deere.
How about a stright truck in the future? I know Travis didnt like big red and would he drive a stright truck?
Dang almost 3 hours per trip. That would pay for another bin in a hurry for bean storage. Here’s to a safe harvest. Great vid.

I'm courious on ya thoughts about if ya were to buy another grain truck a semi and trailer vs truck with 25' grain bed.
Any plans to upgrade the commodity trailer or are you weighing that vs getting a whole new rig? Speaking of semi's, did you ever do a video talking about that flat bed you bought last year?

When talking about grain carts it depends on a lot of factors acreage, on site bins/dryer, truck and trailers and distance to sell. Based on what you said i think a second truck and trailer has more usefulness.
I'm curious . have you ever checked how much you have saved/lost since you have gotten your own truck and do not have to pay for hauling now
RYAN why don't you get a straight truck so your brother or dad can when in corn go farm to bin faster instead of as many gravity wagons or while you are in town with big red
Just an idea maybe depending if you get a good prophet this year maybe get a new smaller tractor like a 6 or 5 series and have a loader for doing chores on the farm with the bobcat and use itwith the gravity wagons

Hey Ryan, Good deal Harvest is a go. Dad, Travis and Ryan know what you 3 need for harvest. The truck I think is a must. And yea the big grain cart help but at what price? I’m with you on getting another semi and grain trailer. More return on investment and added flexibility.
At 6:07 you have beans coming out this side of the bean conveyor! that normal? At least it's in the tank!
Second grain trailer for Big Red then get a set of bogie wheels with a 5th wheel plate on so you can use the 8235r to move the trailer around the fields while the truck is on the road with the other.
Given your hill country, the 30 foot header will max out on flexing. Good move on the header.

With how far you have to haul grain these days having two semi-trailers in-rotation might be the better solution.

The new combine definitely sped up harvest, and yes a 2nd semi would make you more versatile. But this works for now. Good luck on harvest.....

Big grain cart is nice, but the way the farms lay it is marginal with the 8235 in places isn't it?
Only having one truck is our main pinch point, your thought process is probably spot on
Very wise move grasshopper. ? 2nd truck that is giving you flexibility. Don't forget you could also lease them for storage, transfers and shipments. Hana is one hell of an equipment operator. Have fun with record yields, record time savings and solid pricing.

Great start to your harvest their Ryan. Could you run big red with 2 separate trailers, one in the field getting loaded while your off with a full one. Is it a problem hooking up to a fully loaded trailer. 👍

I don't think any of the FarmTubers that I watch got a grain cart sponsorship this year. In fact I think sponsorships have been a bit scarce this year in general.
I know COVID has stretched all manufacturers thin when it comes to inventory right now.
