    Currently going through a wave of nostalgia at like 3am rn haha, but thank you all so so much for continuing to show this piece loads of love!! 🙏
    15 year-old Emma would be absolutely ecstatic to know that it's still of use to others at her age ☺️ (I'm currently 20 as of this comment 😳 time really does fly...)

    This should be a 30/30 - Don't know what institution you go to, however; If one of my students submitted this I would be very impressed (Some teachers can't compose like this)

    I'm starting mine tomorrow and I have no ideas bc I'm a guitar player but I dont really think I could do a guitar piece and I'm pretty sure my plan for the lesson is to sit in the instrument cupboard at the back and cry 😌 this is rlly good btw

      Wishing you the best of luck - I'm sure that it'll be much easier to think of something for guitar since you'd be the most familiar with guitar techniques compared to other instruments. Also tysm!!

      Tysm for the comment! :)
      I'd say, think about a storyline that you'd want your piece to follow and take inspiration from lots of different things around you, or use images to help. From then on, you can think about the types of musical features you'd want to use - music theory will really help with this!
      For this piece in particular, I took inspiration from the types of weather/seasons there are in the UK then I thought about the musical features that each section could have e.g. the section at the beginning has a song-like melody + regular phrasing to match the sunny weather, whereas the thunder section from 1:14 has an irregular time signature and a loud dynamic to represent its aggressive nature. A quieter section is incorporated beforehand which represents the calm before the storm so that the larger contrast between the two sections help to emphasise the violence of the thunder.
      I'm sure you're smashing your composition right now and I wish you the best of luck! You'll get through this. x

    (I especially like the first 20 seconds)

  • @chavaambuehl7605
    @chavaambuehl7605 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Question - can you write your piece in the style or on a theme from another composer and still get the highest marks or will you be downgraded?
    For example can i write a rondo in the style of beethoven and still get full marks?

    • @EmmaGeorgeJapanUK
      @EmmaGeorgeJapanUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm sure you'll still be able to get good marks even if you write in a style similar to another composer as long as you don't plagiarise anything :)

    What the hell, this is so good! Mine sounded alright but always stook with the key and never added any extra naturals/sharps to make it sound a little more interesting. How do you get that type of "classical" sounding chords like at 0:24

    • @mouldycheesebutlikeinabadw3011
      @mouldycheesebutlikeinabadw3011 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Major 3 chord (3rd is usually minor if diatonic) and resolves nicely to the 6th since it’s a 5th above the 6th

  • @rugbyjames3718
    @rugbyjames3718 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    How did you come up with a chord progression?

    • @chavaambuehl7605
      @chavaambuehl7605 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you can take one from a piece of music and write off of that if you find it easier just make sure you aren't copying the melody or rhythm just simply the progression can help, you can even transpose it into a different key that you want it in and change the rythm and everything to make it yours

    • @sorrychangedmyusername3594
      @sorrychangedmyusername3594 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Don't know, just fuck around with a piano for a while. It's like asking a painter what mix of paint they used. You'd probably get a gist even a simple 1-4-5 progression, all is by ear and all is translated through an instrument. Practice makes references, and references makes inspiration for composing.

    Do you have to play the piece for an examiner? I sort of picture it like my piano grade exams (I’m in y9 and just chose music).

    • @freyabibby5921
      @freyabibby5921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      No the only time you perform is in front of your teacher when you do solo and ensemble pieces as the practical aspect of the qualification. This can be re-recorded as many times as you want and it’s not in front of a random examiner, it’s in front of your teacher! The compositions- which is this video- aren’t performed unless you decide to record a performance for the moderator to listen to (if you don’t like the timbre of the instruments on the computer program you use) . You have as much time as you want to complete them (you used to only have 20 hours) and you do 2, one to a brief and the other is a free composition. So it’s nothing like a piano grade exam x (this is all assuming you’re doing the same exam board as i did (AQA) but even so, I don’t think there are any boards that do piano exam style performances in front an examiner at any point)

    • @chavaambuehl7605
      @chavaambuehl7605 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      well yh your imagination is based on things you hear and see and also nowadays it is VERY hard to sound completely 'original' as there is a high chance of someone having the same idea. Plus you are allowed to compose things off other peoples ideas as long as you are not copying them. People write things in the style of other composers as well but it is still their work. Take Kreisler for example - he wrote many pieces on a theme of in the style of another composer.
