I was drawing my lovely templar, nearly finishing it, when suddenly this video pops up. And after seeing it, it made me reconsider redrawing the all thing, to be more accurate. Thank you so much Metatron. Love your videos keep up with the good work :)
Hehehe... That reminds me when I first did an analytic chart of warplanes (I was 12 years old, now I'm at 36 to 37...) I included about 25 planes and I was proud of myself, as I was the only one who had done it. 6 years after, I couldn't believe how silly I was, having conluded so little info about them, only weight and performance specifications and avoiding to state radar, weapons included, ECM equipment etc. Now, that I am an analyst, I look at my old archive what I have done so far, how I begun and where I am now, I can easily understand you when you debunk yourself. And there are still so many I want to learn and understand... Have a nice time, mate, with respect from Greece. Keep the family safe in our difficult times of pandemic.

You should do a video on the historic development of mail like you did with shields.
Talking about great helms and templars, despite the popular association (mainly because of the Deus Vult memes) it happened to be worn even by the sarracens they fought.
Iconographic examples can be found on the Cantigas by Alphonse X of Castille.
Furthermore, there you'll see that if it wasn't for the banners and the light cavalry you couldn't visually distinguish moors from cristians.
rather misleading, the moors in iberia were a far different beast from the muslims in the middle east. moorish armor was generally not very different from that of their christian adversaries, and of course that extends to their helmets such as the great helm. you have to remember that not only did the muslims in iberia frequently hire christian mercenaries (and vice versa), many of their own forces were still primarily of iberian descent rather than berber or arab. the muslims the templars would have faced, while not being as differently armed from the europeans as one might believe, still had their own distinct identity when it came to arms and armor, and i’m not aware of any examples of great helms worn by them existing.
It's a great sign that you've grown in your field when you look back on your past works and see your mistakes and cringe a little bit. Embrace it!
If you were wearing a Halloween custome, then the Lord of the rings sword and the wall hanger shield are quite fitting with the theme.
Honestly I thought the shield looked relatively nice but it's compensating for the lack of shiny on the maille and apparent anguish in his desert march.

Every time Metatron talks about armor being used after it was common place all I can think of is A Knight's Tale. For all it's faults it has a key example of a lower rung nobleman still out and jousting in outdated armor.If you can afford new armor you get it, but if you can't you wear what you have.
how was it? armour got handed down in the family. why throw away a perfectly fine piece when it can still be of use.

theory as to the origins of the term chainmail. i think it started in the here in the U.S. and that's because instead of calling our mail post, we call it mail. so it could be the word chain was added so as to clear up confusion.
Yeah, redundancy isn't an error. The only bad thing is that it can create an impression that "mail" is a generic word for armor, wch it is not, resulting in things like "plate mail", "banded mail" etc.
I'd guess: German influence. It's called Kettenhemd/Kettenrüstung/Kettenpanzer in German. Kette = Chain.

Context matters. I don’t think anyone would think a knight was wearing letters, or that a postman was delivering a mail shirt.

I think it's kind of funny scholagladiatoria subbed to you starting out when he was around 35k and now you're 170k bigger than him. The algorithm can be a fickle mistress.
Doubt it's the algorithm as much as it's metatrons content being easier for the common pleb to understand and follow, as well as mixed content that includes games, which has a much larger audience than history fans.
@@zeroqp That's exactly why it would be the algorithm and how it works. Broader range of content equals more likely to pop up in peoples suggested or as the next video in auto play Plus then there's the random blessings it does. Have you never seen these small sub 10k subscriber channels that suddenly have a years old video dwindling in the 4 digits views the whole time boom to to near millions of views out of nowhere.

I always thought that the problem with having holes on the left side of the visor is not that they compromise the structural integrity of the plate but that they might catch the tip of lances, spears and arrows and transfer all the force to the head rather than letting the point slide off

If you're open to suggestions, I would love to see a video discussing the possible advancements of weapons and armour if firearms were never invented. I think it would be interesting to apply more modern materials and knowledge to medieval technology

correcting your own mistakes is very respectable. never stop making awesome content Metatron!
Oh, posh, yeah, I know, it's "mail", if you're a specialist talking to other specialists... but most people say 'chain mail' , and that's alright, though I might start correcting them if they start saying 'mail' to mean armor in general, and armor types that don't include chainmail in particular, from a leather jerkin to a brigandine coat to full plate harness... heck, being French, I have to say 'cotte de mailles' all the time, knowing it originally meant a mail coat, but without any other word to designate that armor type in my native tongue. BTW, you've got so many videos I've not managed to find if there is one where you tell what the way to say it in Italian is.

It's really nice that you never really spread any misinformation, but you still rectified some things that could potentially be misleading or not in depth enough and therefore give a wrong idea to your audience.
Shows how much integrity you have with your work, because my bet is that 90% of youtubers would only own a mistake if it was direct and blatant spreading of misinformation. As in, I think they would correct themselves and apologize if they claimed if they claimed the great helmet always had holes on both sides, but if they, like you, haven't mentioned anything about the holes being in one or both sides, but showed only examples with bilateral holes, I think most wouldn't admit any mistakes and just insist that they never said they *all* looked like that, and that it's not their fault people got that impression

I suspect that butted mail may have been more historical than we give it credit for. Why does it exist today? Because some people can't/won't spend a lot of money on good rivetted mail, and some armour beats no armour. Well, I've been saying for years that technology may change but people never do. A combatant of the 14th century may not have been able to afford good rivetted mail, but if butted mail is available more cheaply, he may have bought that. Then add in survivorship bias. The cheaply made "it'll do" armour was more likely to be scrapped and recycled than the good butted mail.
also, if he actually won a battle with his butted mail, there were bound to be corpses with some good riveted mail to be scavenged. so it really shouldnt need much successful battling to upgrade.
i think you misunderstand. right now, the difference between riveted mail and butted mail for reenactment is almost entirely cosmetic. back then, the difference between riveted and butted was life or death. a knight doesn’t go into battle with his primary armor being half assed; that’s a good way of getting himself killed. he’d spend the money on fancy riveted mail because he was putting his life on the line.
18:19 in the content creating bizz they call this creators regret which is when you watch your old videos did them for fun but as you get more professional about creating content and you didn't know how well they would do you wish you could change the past...

And as far as chain mail goes -even Matt Easton is not a snob about the terminology. Yes he calls it mail but i've never seen him hold "chain mail" against any one. The ill-fit would fit better for lesser ranks. Arsenal grade was "mass-produced" to the extent the Middle Ages could do that and was generic in sizes so most men from a feudal array could wear it at short notice. Short mail coats also appear in art depicting archers in this period.

Dont ask Indians in social media to make an armor. Meet a genuine Indian armor smith in person. Make him know some history, make him research and advicce your style. He might make it well.
This is actually great, I'm sure it gives a lot of people the courage to start.
If you started out this bad and learned along the way, then we can all do it! It's encouraging to see that you don't have to be perfect to start making content, as long as you remain honest and able to look at yourself with a critical eye.
