The original studio version of Gimme Shelter has one of the most ominous and foreboding intro's in rock history. I love it.

Scott Thrower that’s exactly it, you described it so well.

    • @MrKenny777

Scott Thrower I agree. It’s one of the tracks that epitomises The Stones - brooding and dangerous, like music at the edge of the abyss.

The Altamont version is really dark and heavy too if you ever get to watch Gimme Shelter. Foreboding is a perfect word for this song.

Not only is the original Gimme Shelter the coolest Stones tune of all time, it has to be the coolest rock track of all time. It is pure alchemy. You can listen to it a million times and it still hits the spot like the first time you heard it, or as Keith says, hit those notes with the right timing in the right way and you got a cheap ride to heaven! Thanks Marti.

My favorite Stones song is really hard to say. As a kid, 1970s, it was either “Beast of Burden” or quite likely this song. Then for years (back in early 80s / college days) it was “Paint it Black”, with “Sympathy for the D”coming in a close second. And in the alt-country late 80s, early 90s, period “Honky Tonk Woman,” with “Dead Flowers,” “Far Away Eyes, and even “Country Honk.”
Now they just have far too many amazing songs to pick a favorite. Pure greatness.
Thanks for another killer lesson Marty. You are the man and I know if you have done a YT lesson on a song, I will learn it quickly. Great stuff. Thanks again.

Thanks Marty. I once picked up a guitar at 17 yrs. and decieded I'd rather sing along.... It'll be a minute before I can grasp this one. But I love it! Flash forward.. I've finally got myself an acoustic guitar at 56yrs. It took me a minute! Anyway, I've got a lot to catch up on. You are my teacher. I've got your beginner lessons down I now know the strings names, and your basic first cords, and one blues lesson 1,4,&7. I now pick up the guitar every day, for at least half an hour to on and off all day long if i'm home/ I so want to learn what I should've a long time ago. everything I now know is because of you. THANK YOU so much, you'll never know. I basically thought I could't afford a guitar, or lessons. But with facebook marketplace, I found a nice, cheap guitar, and the Best Teacher on youtube... YOU. I love you and your lessons. I can't wait to go home at the end of summer for a visit, and show my mom my newly taught skills.
Stones songs, all the ones you've already put out, and do you have Dead Flowers? That's my song

    2:52 !!! Thank you!!!
I'm NOT a musician and I always wondered if that was tremolo.
After 50 odd years my question has been answered !!!
