Couldn’t agree more. My local shop has been rolling through them and I’ve literally tried to find one that had bad quality control because I figured “they can’t all be good” and they surprised me every time. Every one is set up perfectly
Reverend is the best deal going, they stay in tune and have spot on intonation above the twelfth fret.. I wasn’t used to that. @@sketchyold I think all of us like to rock out sometimes, but when trying to determine the sound quality of a guitar using extreme gain has very limited use in evaluating the pickups. Unless of course your goal is to get a guitar that is going to be doing nothing but high-gain.
"Did he ever get the patent?" -- He certainly did. Beginning in 1962, the PAFs began carrying labels that showed the patent number instead of "Patent Applied For". The new label read "Patent Number 2,737,842."
However, the famous collectible Gibson LPs are the 58, 59, and 60 model years that had PAF marked pickups in them. And note there are only 4,000 of the 2,500 originals left!
Actually Gibson avoided to place patent number as long as possible and once they have started placing numbers on the stickers they have intentionally placed a number from some other guitar part. Why? Well they wanted to prevent other Companies to use patent to help them engineer their own solution. So P.A.F. was way to claim it is protected by the law but avoid giving the technical information to other companies.
The bass roll off is a audio log pot. So most change happens right in the beginning of turning it down. To get a lot more adjustment range, I changed mine out for a reverse audio log and it gave me much more adjustment. Its a super interesting control to mess with when plugged into a fuzz that cleans up when you back volume down
A lot of Reverend's guitars remind me of the stuff being manufactured by Teisco and Harmony in the 70s and 80s. That have that distinct Japanese vibe to them that screams retro, but with a modern edge.
I absolutely love Reverend Guitars. Something about them just draws me in and makes me want to play. Those necks are so firm and straight. The frets are nice and big, The look, the feel, the sound. Sooo good.... I'm going to buy another. I also love the hand signed inspections on the back of the headstock.
I love Reverend Guitars! I have a Manta Ray 390 (finished in a lovely color called Mulberry Mist, a kind of creamy strawberry) that I absolutely adore. So incredibly well-made, the pickups sound great, love the bass knob, locking tuners, and so playable. GREAT value for the price, no doubt about it. Now when I dream about my next guitar, I tend to focus almost exclusively on Reverends. I admit I am a sucker for their retro-yet-contemporary design aesthetic. So cool!
I’m a big fan of Reverend’s...great players at mid level prices. If you haven’t played one, you should...Joe Naylor and Ken Haas are true innovators and geared to producing quality instruments for real world players.
Yes! They eventually got the Patent for the humbuckers in '59. But only added the Patent numbers a while later. Although both have the same design, PAF pickups are much more sought after than their Patent number counterparts in the vintage guitar market.
Thank you guys ... you did it again! Great axes from a not so popular manufacturer: - they look great and do have that little extra to stand up against "total copies" of LP or Jag or Tele style of common runners in the market - i liked the looks of all 3 types - they sound great individually ! No need to compare them - that T-type was totally new to me; great blue wonder (;-) So, thanks a lot for this great demo!
If I think about who I associate playing Reverend guitars - they are mostly post-rock players (and no, I don't mean Royal Mail workers!) so you want that volume knob reaaaallll close to the strings so you can do easy volume swells. Just my two cents! Great video as always folks.
You guys at Andertons are awesome. My last two guitars I got was due to your reviews. Been a fan of Reverend - even when it was still located in Michigan, and somehow, I've always managed to have one of their models in my small quiver o' guitars. Been thru quite a few models over the years, and I've now a Double Agent W (the one with the Wilkinson trem, chronic blue w/' tortoise guard). There's just something about these guitars that make them instantly comfortable to play, and why I'll always have one, but I think my DAW is a true 'keeper'....And yes - that Avocado color is the bomb!
That the Captain thought that American Woman was written by Lenny Kravitz was heartbreaking. Then to be unable to remember the great Canadian band The Guess Who...Cap...

A few weeks ago I received my Double Agent W and I absolutely love it :-). The only thing that slightly bothers me is the string action particularly past the 7th fret, I presume this is because the Wilkinson trem is raised off the body to allow some pullback on the bar (it's my first Wilkinson trem by the way). Or are there other things that need to be done to make sure the intonation\tuning etc is unaffected?
