a little trick I use sometimes especially for FTS in zrl is to pick a point of attack and commit to it, I already have an idea of the power I need to maintain to get first so will actively not look at the screen but rather my power on my bike screen and head down all in mentality and forget everyone else for that time. works wonders as if someone does come past you subconsciously don't ease up because you know your going to max, find this useful for short KoMs aswell like NYC head down x watts
Great tip Rob! I know others that are a firm believer in this also. Sometimes you can do more power than you ‘think’ or ‘feel’ you can also - so your method would definitely be better to squeeze out every last watt! Sometimes I can squeeze a couple extra watts out if I see a rider gaining and only a few metres behind me, but sometimes it is the opposite!
Thanks mate - that’s super cool to hear from one of only 3 riders I have the privilege of having ridden with that have a National champs Jersey in their wardrobe! 👊👍💪🇺🇸
I think this is a great tip to win a sprint but to get the best time it is more important to have a high entry speed. Strava doesn't show this segment so it is hard to find what my times are but if memory serves I hit the start at around 43 kph and averaged low 700s for a better time.
Thanks Ian - I think you’re talking about the first tip of going from the back, I mentioned 3 tips, the second of which was ‘go well in advance of the start line to make sure you are up to speed before the start of the sprint’ - so sounds like we’re on the same page 👊👍. I’ve got top 30 on aqueduct KOM on Strava taking the go early approach
Thanks Dan. Unfortunately the last couple of recap videos were my lowest viewed videos ever so trying some other content. The race recap videos won’t be going away though so stayed tuned for another one very soon!

Having the right bike and wheels definitely helps too. Great tips!
Great shout! That will definitely make it into volume 2
