  • In this captivating documentary, Robin Danehav learns about the incredible journey of Martin, a Swedish entrepreneur, as he transitions from a 9-to-5 lifestyle to building his own resort on the remote Gili Islands in Indonesia. Over 13 years, Martin faced extreme challenges-working three jobs in Norway, cycling through jungles with construction supplies, and battling deep personal struggles. Yet, he never gave up.
    This film is about perseverance, passion, and self-discovery. Martin shares his inspiring story of how he turned a piece of land in Bali into a thriving resort, all while wrestling with the loss of his father and the emotional toll of long-term commitment. Alongside breathtaking visuals of Indonesian landscapes, you'll learn how Martin’s unshakable determination and resilience brought him success on his own terms, defying societal norms.

    Great story, the journey is indeed not straight nor can we do it alone. Thanks for sharing.

    Very well made and inspiring! Thanks for giving Martin the recognition he so much deserves. I'm amazed by his resilience and perseverance and as his friend can only hope some of it rubs off on me because we should all aspire to a little bit more like Martin, who not only created what he set out to do but did so with his own sweat and tears and by learning the language fully and respecting the country and its people more than any other expat I've met.

      Thank you! And I totally I agree, I think if he could bottle his soul up and sell it the world would be so good (and Martin very rich)

    Hi...are you still on Bali?
    Sulit story 😂
    story line a bit confusing so maybe a few more details would explain.
    I have a Balinese/Javanese friend that yesterday, is starting a way for Tamu in Bali to raise their frequency during these expansive times called "We Might Be Giants".

      Sorry if it was a bit Sulit. I tried to squeeze a lot in there :)
      I'm not in Bali still, but Martin is going back there now as we speak after spending the summer in Copenhagen.

    I wish I saw this several years ago when I was there but... was busy dodging dodgy locals who were pushing ice.. seems everyone smokes the shite there, sadly.

    What a great film! I’m also living in Gili Trawangan and in process of building villas here. It sure does require a unique logistical journey hehe! What a lovely and inspiring story from Martin. Hope to cross paths some time. We also have a music studio here so maybe he will enjoy to visit our place so it’s not only work time on Gili :)

    I hate to burst your bubble.
    but a young Bule with wanderlust coming to Bali with little to nothing, staying and building his dream villa (guest house/hotel) is hardly something new or original. Quite the contrary. Come on guys..Canggu, the Giliis (its a well trodden bule path ).

    • @storybydanehav
      @storybydanehav  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I would say originality is perhaps not the point of this story. Did you watch it?

    • @mikerubin7318
      @mikerubin7318 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@storybydanehav Yes, I did. And I've been in Bali off and on for 35 years. Its really nothing new or novel frankly. Its a pretty well trodden adventurous bule path. 20 or 30 plus years ago, perhaps less so and more interesting. #Human trials and tribulations. Paradise Lost in many ways - Bali, Canggu and the Gilis.

    Wow that's a lot of hard work and adapting to that culture.
    I was in gilli T for a week in the early 90's, I really didn't like it. The men made my gf quite uncomfortable with their learing and crude remarks (we can both speak a little Indonesian) seeing local women being beaten by their husbands and local gangs trying to bait me into fighting them.
    Seeing turtle's with their fins stitched together left in the sun before being taken to market and various acts of cruelty. Not to mention the sex pests their not just men but mostly women behaving unashamedly.
    Re the turtle's, we were just laughed at when we suggested to let them live as people will pay to see them laying their egg's.
    That island in particular I found to very primitive and backwards.

    • @storybydanehav
      @storybydanehav  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I hear you, and there is a cultural difference compared to for example Bali, with different religions, values and that sort of thing. I think a lot has changed since the 90's but from my experience when filming this I could definitely see some fragments of the things you mention being there in the background.
      People who are behaving badly in our eyes are usually not bad people, but have been shaped in a certain way through their life and the things that they have experienced which is very different from my own experience coming from Sweden.
      So things clash. And I absolutely hate seeing animals being treated badly. And get so frustrated. And I judge these people doing it. But I also have to reality check myself and understand that change is slow.
      Hopefully in time, it will get better.

    Ghili need government attention. It still not developed at all. it feel like normal countryside of Indonesia in another island, which is not good.

    • @storybydanehav
      @storybydanehav  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes a lot of these small islands that are very accessible for Bali tourists are lagging behind a bit on the infrastructure, if that's what you mean. So much remains to be done, and much is being done.
      When I was there filming this there was no real road on the center cutting way through the island, just potpoles, mud and water from all the rain in the wet season.
      But since then (feb 2024) a large part of it has been paved. So things are moving :)

      Thank you! To get to Gili T the easiest way is to fly in to Bali and then book a trip to Gili T at local destination provider which will set you up with transfer to the port and the boat tickets.
      To book it it's available on Booking.com and Airbnb - just google "Lost Paradise Gili" and you'll find it. And when you get there, let them know you watched this film :D

      I think it would be too much of a gamble to do this on a tourist visa. Also, you can't run a business on a tourist visa. But yes, indonesian institutions are a bit hard to navigate, that's the truth.
