Thank you for sharing this conversation with one of my favorite intellectuals, Nikole Hannah Jones. I am so glad the haters have not been able to silence this brilliant woman.
I don’t think that it’s so much that many people *want* to engage with this history (as they don’t even know it exists) - but rather that those in or of power realize that if ignorance is dismantled that the hierarchy of wealth and power is then dismantled as well.
Not exactly. While the facts are essential, the psychological damage is ignored. We are all witnesses to the normalization and perpetuation of Malignant Narcissism in American Culture. Try to take us all through rehab, they say NO NO NO.
@ True that not *all* people would not be cured of their ignorance. That said: not only would educating children on reality from kindergarten (as opposed to the selective memory version they currently receive in public schools) enlighten minds from the beginning of their childhood development - but even for many adults - information they have not received in their lifetime would no doubt have an impact. After all, there is a *reason* that type of information is being blocked. The powers be are not blocking it arbitrarily. But, again, don’t think anyone living in ignorance is seeking that type of information. It would need to be introduced intentionally.
My belief is that Americans can’t help but look at their role as similar to that as a child in a family, with a traditional hierarchical structure. Those who are most comfortable with the idea of breaking from tradition are comfortable with learning new things and accepting difficult truths. Likewise, people who cling to old ways, find more comfort looking backwards and grouping themselves with others like themselves who remain on home soil and fear striking out on their own.
Policy has made it the way it is as well… keeping ordinary Americans with the bulk of taxes because there are many of us, and reared loop hole for the rich and corporations… because corporations have the rights of “individuals… unfair at best,
Far too many are afraid of history. No one alive now is responsible for slavery or the trail of tears. If you are triggered by things you learn you can grow from what you learn. The future deserves your attention to history.
There is such a massive amount of knowledge and political discourse, going back hundreds of years, that leads to the inevitable conclusion that these people are petty, foolish grifters, whose 15 minites of fame are almost done. Sadly, they will be replaced by new tap dancers, continually comforting and fascinating those who seek easy answers.
Such a great point about agency. This is a fundamental freedom that is part of a democratic society: the freedom to alter social and political organization. Graeber and Wengrow count this among the 3 freedoms that indigenous peoples had that we don’t necessarily have (the other 2 the freedom to disobey and the freedom to leave and be accepted elsewhere). This is ultimately about freedom.
Just after the Emancipation Proclamation and around the turn of the 20th century, school curriculum began to change and the black experience was only taught in terms of how white America benefited. So we were taught about Frederick Douglas, for example, but not about Charles Remond or James W. C. Pennington. The choice here was based in fear, and it succeeded in producing generations of Americans who had very little knowledge of this important part of history. That fear is still there! But things are changing.
Everyone who loves their country to some extent is a "nationalist" so to use it in the negative is really a fallacy. Also, history isn't some obscure subject and children/adults have all the liberty in our country to explore many topics. You don't have to limit your knowledge because it's not on a school syllabus. Thank you❤🇺🇸
It’s not “your” or theirs or my history. It’s the history of the US. A nation’s history encompasses its unique origins, survival through trials, and future direction. While every nation has a story to tell about itself, every national story is different, shaped by the political imperatives, cultural climate, and institutional arrangements of each national community.
If we were meant to hold anyone liable for history...we'd have to charge whites& blacks,Native Americans etc. All for enslaving and being enslaved. If history doesn’t accurately and completely reflect the reality of what happened, it NEEDS to be rewritten. What qualifies you to characterize the meticulously researched, Pulitzer prize winning 1619 Project as trash?

Okay, now I want to know what's up with Grover Cleveland.

She is spot on!!! It's all American history. Love Nikole Hanna-Jones. Truth teller. ❤❤❤

@@lifecloud2 And you’re sure you’re not inflating its importance?

Not limiting one’s knowledge-good advice! I suggest you do the same and look into the differences between nationalism and patriotism.
😢
History always affects policy making
Nikole Hannah-Jones has said she is not an historian.
What happened to the reset?
Fishblate Jacobi Judah P Benjamin Albert Pike...
Now, why on earth would I be afraid of your history?

@@rasija4 Everything is broken down into mine and yours. Black History, etc... You have a nice idea there but its time is not yet here.
You would have known if you had gone to school and paid attention. It is so sad people think this is newly discovered.
Hannah Jones is such a fraud. She desperately needs a better understanding of history!!
😲..ok, so lets hear YOUR VERSION Smart One !! ..😠
@ My version of American history? You want me to start with Jamestown and end with today? You’re joking.
So, what, you just skipped over the whole slavery/Jim Crow business?
@@vtfollett No. That’s part of it for sure. Note I said “PART”.

These women are trying to rewrite history with the trash 1619 project. I don't think they truly care about history. That's what I'm afraid of.
You need to think what history even is.
