The original Elder Dragons may not have any points, but they’re still the most influential elders, and arguably one of the most influential card cycles in the entire game. Those 5 elder dragons were the very first commanders back when EDH was just a small variant played among a group of judges, and they gave Elder Dragon Highlander its name.
It's weird, because aside from Nicol Bolas the OG Elder Dragons are absolutely atrocious. But I suppose their absolutely fantastic art is part of why they became so popular. Let's be real, Nicol Bolas reading a fucking book and Arcades Sabboth just fucking looking at you are hilarious!
@@atticussalmon4938 the boons were just some 1 mana instants that ranged in power from absolutely busted to Healing Salve. Definitely more iconic, but they didn’t inspire one of the most popular formats in Magic.
Man, this really shows how absurd the powercreep has been in recent years: Most of those dragons require you to pay 6 or 7 mana, do nothing the turn they come in, and you have to wait a turn and attack and go through to gain any value out of them. And that value is like "draw one" If Ojutai was printed today it would cantrip, have lifelink and make you draw all three.
Yavimaya Elder is also not an Elder, and was what I was expecting. I didn't even realize it was just reprinted too (I haven't played in years) when I went to look it up to be sure it wasn't one.
Personally, I really like the "Elder" creature type mostly because it makes no sense. I like to think of it as the "Old Man" creature type. Just picture all of the cards on this list with a cane and grey hair, I think it's pretty chuckle worthy. I think the dying wish of Dragonlord Dromoka would be for you to do "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)", at least before I become an old man myself waiting.
it makes a fair bit of sense if you think of it not as a creature that's strong because it's so old, but rather a creature so powerful _in spite of_ the fact that it's so old granted, there is the side of it that the wisdom and magical power accumulated over all those years contributes to the creature's power, but that's mostly a side for the stuff like the elder dragons. the elder _dinosaurs?_ they're just _way_ too badass for old age to drag them down
Kind of wish they would finish the titan cycle. even if it wasnt in a standard legal set. maybe for commander or something. Flavor wise they are some of the coolest creatures in the game for me.
Super happy my boy Silumgar made it on the list. Good thing I just picked up two more before this video dropped. I bet the price would have been way higher.
Regarding Chromium, another way to design hexproof is to not put it on overstated rares and mythics, and to not to print enough pushed counters and removal that people just stack 28 of them. It's ok to bring those powers down a bit so blue and black can have a little bit of creature quality.
@@NizzahonMagic I think if magic is ever pushed into a context where aura's are good, you've put magic in a great spot where combat is relevant, and both players interact in the most interactive phase.
@@NizzahonMagic This more implies an issue with Boggles splashability, due to it's rather free mana cost, allowing it access to the best auras and countermagic protection, rather than hexproof itself. We;ve had far stronger hexproof creatures than boggles (by points per year) who were not aura stacked, and the main reason is the lack of investment needed in Boggles. As for Boggles himself, he's far more interactive than 16 conterspells "Pass-go" that has been the past 2 years of esper.
Even though Nicol Bolas Classic is the only playable Legends Elder Dragon, I would say that cycle is a big deal for setting up all other legendary dragon cycles, the Elder type, EDH/Commander, and Bolas as a major villain.
I almost never encountered Uro, since I almst never play constructed, but still pretty salty even so that WOTC took their sweet damned time banning him when it should have been done months early
Omnath, too. Guess we can hope that Wizards is slowly realizing that maybe pushing cards this hard isn't a good idea, huh? It's even more obvious how pushed Omnath is, considering it's the face of the collector boosters.
@@Nukesnipe I doubt they'll stop soon, considering that the overtuning problem has been with us since Throne of Eldraine. They learnt NOTHING after Oko broke the format(not to mention other ELD cards being problematic even today). The newer sets might not be as pushed as a whole but there certainly are cards which just dominate the Standard format quite easily. Sometimes even other formats are in danger! Remember companions? Lurrus is so absurdly strong it's BANNED IN VINTAGE AND LEGACY. Zirda is banned in Legacy as well.
@Najawin I don't want to be rude, but if the combos weren't banned, Pioneer could have been dead by now. I mean, how many people were unable of starting a league on mtgo?
I wish something like atarka would get printed again in standard. Like a drakuseth with haste. This is so much better as a payoff for ramp than this stupid ass value chain reaction with omnath and uro. I even played some jund ramp Darigaaz in standard just because i liked the animation it had and it felt good to just cast a 7 mana dragon with a big ass animation whon immediatly smacks into your opponents face.
Their next set will have the Elder Characters and will consist of characters from other IPs, like Fast and Furious, Avengers and Walking Dead. It will only be available through Secret Lair at the cheap price of your soul, and all the cards will have the same ability: "when this creature enters the battlefield, you win the match. If you win the match this way, slap your opponent in the face, take his deck, his car and his joy of living."
Of fucking course it's gonna be Oro, there is literally no fucking way it is anything else. Might as well call this one Oro and the 9 other most played elders. Edit: Edit: Surprise surprise, the card that literally took over standard, sees other format play, and dominanted the competitive scene to the point that variety was just asking do you want to play Temur Oro or Sultai Oro is number one, WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED THAT!?!?!?
Sure, but the problem with finding the "best" or "worst" of anything is that you need to set some objective standard to evaluate everything by or you're just picking whatever you like. Subjective lists like that can be interesting but I personally really like the objective nature of this channel, while the point system isn't perfect it does at least provide that measurement and it's reasonable to assume that "cards that succeeded in competitive play" is close enough to "best cards."
Premiere event metas do reflect a very specific meta -- the one that is created by the people the most skilled at this game, so I think it is a reasonable way to assess the best cards. You can choose other methods of course, but no matter what you do, you are neglecting some aspect of this game because there are so many ways to play it.
