You can complain about a million things with WOTC like their greed, their corporate culture or the way they treat anyone outside of the C suite as garbage. BUT I do find it a little ridiculous that people are criticizing this set for being lower on power level than MH2 after they spent 2 years whining about Urza's Sage, Ragavan and Solitude. WOTC listened and cranked it down a peg at the top end of power level... that is what people wanted after MH2... and now they get criticized for it.
I think the issue is that the people who were complaining about all that stuff stopped playing or changed formats - I know I did, and more than a few people I know sold up entirely-, and its only the people who were on-board with the new design who stuck around to talk about it now.

A lot of modern players were hoping for new archetypes to play since we're so sick and bored of the evoke elementals & Yawgmoth. Only archetype happy about MH3 are Troj variants
And then it still dies to any board wipe and with so many tokens available dies with little cost to most single target removal as well... is an okayish card which becomes better in specific decks but gets rekt easily by lots and lots of decks these days. Im gonna say Ulamog is nearly unplayable in most situations...

@@PsychoDiesel48 it doesnt apply to old ulamog for one, with regards to board wipes, but even targetted removal, its often setting up a multi card combo to set up with annihilator and sure they may have to sac some lands and be behind, swhen they solitude it theyll have to sac the solitude and a land for control, but most decks can sac 2 lands to get rid of your wincon you spent multiple cards on and like, be happy with that, and thats a worst case for them, compare it to atraxa, where you drew an entire new hand, or griselbrand, where you drew an entirely new hand, so if they answer it theyll need another the next turn, and the next turn, and so on. setting up a 2 for 3 just probably isnt game breaking for it over its competitions in combo decks, is the gist of what he was saying. its not that atraxa survives a supreme verdict, its that supreme verdicting an atraxa is not winning you the game, its buying you a turn, if you leyline binding this ulamog, then it did nothing super massive compared to those and youre in a great spot vs that deck im going to love trying to sneak attack this card and annihilate for 10 and pop off in timeless, but im not going to pretend its better than probably doing the same with a griselbrand realistically.

One other big difference with Necrodominance is that it comes with a personal Rest in Peace. Necropotence only exiles on discard, Necrodominance exiles when anything goes to the graveyard for any reason.
Just to clarify something on Necrodominance, if someone plays Bowmasters in response to the trigger you can choose not to draw cards or maybe only draw 1 or 2 to look for answers so it's not as bad as they think it is since your opponent cant play Bowmasters to respond to the trigger after you choose how many cards to draw.

I’d agree if it weren’t for the fact that it skips your draw step. Say you have 3 or 4 cards in hand. Drop down Necro, opponent flashes in Bowmasters. Now you’re taking 2 damage a draw, giving your opponent a bigger army token, and skipping your draw step entirely. With it on the field you’ve doubled the damage the bowmasters is going to do from that point on. And you can no longer naturally draw into removal. There’s no “gotcha” moment… But there is you getting potentially locked entirely out of the game
The problem is, what are you gonna do if you don't have removal for it in your hand? You must skip your draw step with Necro on the field, so the only option is to pay life to draw with necro and every card will effectively bolt you, since you pay a life, get pinged by 1 and grow the army by 1. So assuming you're at like ~15 life at that stage of the game, you get to look at like 4 cards before you die.
Idk you guys are giving worst case scenario like that's what's gonna happen all the time and even if your opponents are guaranteed to ALWAYS have Bowmasters which is just false but let's pretend it is the case then don't play Necro out without having fatal push or a grief/thoughtsieze to back it up just like you would play almost any other card that you need to resolve in modern.
You don't need brainstorm, you can use drawtwo effects: Metamorphic blast, Three steps ahead, chart a course, faithful mending, izzet charm, see beyond, tainted indulgence.

Yeah, pretty much this every time. Seth is so optimistic and excited for the future, Richard is a MASSIVE pessimist and says everything is bad because there are potential weaknesses, and Crim has the most balanced takes when he is fully conscious.
Shifting woodlands, copy one ring, tap draw the cards, you keep the burden on the lands but it changes back. So for four mana every turn you have a one ring that doesn't deal you damage.
The main difference between the necros is that if your opponent has a removal spell you can still draw 10 off of original necropotence but not with the new one because the payment has to happen at the end step
Tamiyo + ramp, copy effects, and extra turns. Essentially tamiyo, growth spiral 1, growth spiral 2 by using her -3 and getting 2 to 3growth spiral to 4(return + g mana) to growth spiral again, leave 1 open mana. Then extra turns seems like her goal. She lets you have infinite of the same card in your deck if you use her -3 and you can have her front side and back side out at the same time, and just threaten to -3, kill flip, and be able to -3 next turn again. Its essentially a card that can loop 1 card (such as memory lapse) over and over and over. I see tamiyo as modern counter spells. And commander extra turns.
Tamiyo and Bauble Turn 1. Crack bauble in opponents turn. Untapped, draw for bauble, draw for turn, attack with tamiyo. Play second land and Crack the clue, flip Tamiyo. Seems pretty reasonable to flip in modern as well
With Mishra’s Bauble new Tamiyo can flip turn 2. I honestly think on turn 3 playing Explore/Farseek minusing to get it back and playing it again is a worthwhile play. 6 Mana turn 4 can be pretty nasty.
The interesting thing about new necro, is that since the paying of life and card draw happens in the same line of text the opp cant flash in a bowmaster in response to the card draw to "get" you. Also another small but key detail where its different than you guys mentioned from og necro is that you have to choose how many cards to draw then immediately draw, you cant choose to later pay life in response to something and then draw at the end of next turn.
Ugin's labrinth is a soul land that has Imprint 7+mana creature from your hand. That counts as in exile for Ulamog, Defiler so you'll have at least a 14/14 annihilator 7 creature when its reanimated. I think its got a very different use than the other Ulamog where its exile cast matters more.
I think what folks are missing about the card too is that many decks can function better with only islands rather than only mountains. You can still stop a win with islands
Bowmasters doesn't stop necro. You pay life and draw x cards in the same effect so you don't pick the number of cards until your opponent already has bowmaster in play. No opportunity for "gotcha"
Greenbelt Rampager is one of my top three favourite cards, I wonder if it will get more attention in Commander with the new combo. So good in Panharmonicon style decks!
In timeless, primal prayers might steal wins from show and tell. Remember, primal parayers gives flash to your infinite combo peices. Your opponent casts show and tell, you put in primal prayers, and you win on the spot even though the opponent has omnicience in play.
The one thing i haven't heard anyone talk about with necrodiminance is: How good is it as an ADDITIONAL necropotence? I belive that would be the where it would be the most likely to find a spot but i dont realy know necro decks so its just a thought.
I don't think you grasped how Ral will likely play out. Either you have him on the board before storming off. In that case he'll flip with (more or less) your second spell. You still want the discount so you +1 him and continue as if you hadn't just flipped a PW. Or you don't have him on board when you start storming. In that case you'll draw him, play him with storm count 4 or more (now with him 5) and hope with your next spell you flip him for the ult. And those are the relatively good case scenarios. So I think he might see play there if storm comes back.
This set has a lot of cards that are good in modern, but arent good in most current modern decks. Cant wait to see what spike says is good for the next few months.

The only real use I can think of for birthing ritual is that maybe its decent for the info? I wouldnt say its a competitive card for modern but for casual modern or commander, knowing what your top 7 are and being able to shuffle it with fetchlands can definitely be useful. Especially since its only 2 mana and repeatable.
Ral might be a great midrange value card on top of the storm gimmick. If you can reliably flip it and -2 that's a huge amount of value right there. DRC already wants you to cast a bunch of spells, so maybe there's something there.
I'm putting birthing ritual into Henzie. I run ~26 creature's that I'd call unambiguously good hits off of sacrificing a 4MV creature to birthing ritual, which puts me at around 85-90% odds of getting a good hit from it off a 4-drop blitzer, and over 50% chance that I'll get a choice. It's also easy to cast in the early midgame (t4 ish) alongside a blitzer in the same turn. I quite like it over eldritch evolution in EDH for value in my particular build since its repeatable and going into a casual deck that doesn't run combo lines. (I also play pod in that deck too, making room for both) It's probably unplayable trash in 60 card formats.
Necropotence doesn't combo with Sheoldred. Sheoldred plus The One Ring is a great combo, because you're netting 1 life for each card you draw. The same is true for Necrodominance. You pay X life to draw X cards and you gain 2X life. If The One Ring kills Necrodominance, then Sheoldred definitely resuscitates Necrodominance. Once both are on the table, you're pretty much guaranteed to draw however many cards you want. The only thing it doesn't grant you is protection.
1:55 I think y'all were starting to get it a while back but are again missing the big picture. Modern is the new Legacy/Vintage. Just actually supported, and more controlled, for now. Thus, the commander precon cards slowly flowing into the format.
What about birthing ritual as a information effect? Just being able to peek 7 deep is worth something. Just by having ways to shuffle like fetches makes this information super valuable, can you imagine every turn knowing what your next 7 cards will be and being able to plan ahead with that information?
For as long as mtg has existed, the majority of cards in any given set have and are never going to see competitive play so why do we act like every card that isn’t competitive for 60 card formats but not bad enough to just be relegated to draft chaff fodder bins need to be looked at like it’s explicitly made for commander unless it has actual commander related text in the rules? By your standards, we would’ve called so many sets in years past a “commander set” like khans of Tarkir or Alara. “Oh this clash mechanic in lorwyn is so silly, iT mUsT bE For CoMmAnDeR”. Necrodominance also shuts off Aristocrat strategies as well. I have a Yagmowth deck that runs OG Necro and thought I needed this too but it shuts down my loops with death triggers
My worry about harbringer is that you turn on all the counter magic in the game. I rather take my chances with bolt. Also this doesnt stop show and tell like a blood moon could potentially do
Ulamog off of creativity style effects lets it see itself for its etb. Its weird as hell but it works as its a replacement effect. 17/17 annihilator 10. Could be good, could be flat worse than archon.
While i have a distinct hate for all variations of free spells, the new ones seem "kinda" ok and i am curious if there is a colorless one, considering the heavy colorless theme that is present in the set (devoid in particular).
whether ral is enough to make storm tier 1 or not, its strictly better than baral is and probably has a good matchup into decks like tron and yawgmoth so.
With how it's templated that would make the effect work infinitely, but with some rewording that would fix the card. It might also kill it, but there were a zillion balancing knobs on the card and they turned none of them.
I actually think the opposite. They said last year that bowmasters was a problem and they were going to ban everything around it. That's probably because they wanted it around to keep necro-2 and other stuff from this set in check.
I personally think Birthing Ritual will play better than it looks. You guys are too focused on combo decks that need to tutor for one specific card. You can use Birthing Ritual in a normal creature or midrange deck and then it upgrades one of your creatures for free every end step. I'm not saying it's busted but I'm interested in trying it. It's probably still not good enough because 7 deep is not a lot of looks. If it was digging 10 deep then you wouldn't "whiff" as much.
My biggest hope is that Bolt, Memory Lapse, and Counterspell get reprinted at common or uncommon in this set so that they'll be downshifted from Rare on Arena.
@@starmanda88I think there's some hope given that other Mystical Archive cards got reprinted like Lightning Helix. Helix is obviously a far cry from the other three, but it is a precedent at least.
Idk ab some people but im very glad wotc saw how badly modern horizons 1 and 2 power crept the format and decided to tone it down for 3 these cards are by no means stupidly broken like fury or ragavan but they are powerful fun cards and thats cool!
I think Modern players are right to be angry about edh cards being MH3. Especially because MH3 already has edh decks. So from my pov MH3 should have NO cards designed for EDH. That's the key word: "designed for" edh. Obviously MH sets will always have powerful cards that will see edh play, that's unavoidable. What you can and should avoid is design cards for commander in a set that's supposed to help tier 3 decks in modern. There's not many cards thankfully that you read and go "well this is unplayable everywhere except for casual commander" but there are enough to be annoyed about it.
Maybe my argument isn't super clear but I'm just saying they should have modern in mind when designing the base set cards. They should be designed, balanced and playtested with modern in mind. You can still have legendary creatures that are great for edh, but don't make them with edh in mind.
Exhibit A: Shilgengar, Sire of Famine Very cool card. Very obviously designed as an orzhov commander. It will never see any play in modern. I'm not saying Shilgengar shouldn't exist, but you should put it in a commander set and leave it out of the modern horizons 3 base set.
They need to ban bowmaster in legacy and modern and restrict it in timeless. The entire video they kept referencing it as to why cards wont see play. If a single card prevents so many cards from seeing play then it needs to go

And those are the relatively good case scenarios. So I think he might see play there if storm comes back.

I love the idea of you being on the draw, your opponent plays show and tell, and you drop primal prayers and combo off on their turn...
The only real use I can think of for birthing ritual is that maybe its decent for the info? I wouldnt say its a competitive card for modern but for casual modern or commander, knowing what your top 7 are and being able to shuffle it with fetchlands can definitely be useful. Especially since its only 2 mana and repeatable.
Ral might be a great midrange value card on top of the storm gimmick. If you can reliably flip it and -2 that's a huge amount of value right there. DRC already wants you to cast a bunch of spells, so maybe there's something there.
Tamiyo only needs a draw 2 to flip, for example it synergies really well with chart a course.
I'm putting birthing ritual into Henzie. I run ~26 creature's that I'd call unambiguously good hits off of sacrificing a 4MV creature to birthing ritual, which puts me at around 85-90% odds of getting a good hit from it off a 4-drop blitzer, and over 50% chance that I'll get a choice. It's also easy to cast in the early midgame (t4 ish) alongside a blitzer in the same turn. I quite like it over eldritch evolution in EDH for value in my particular build since its repeatable and going into a casual deck that doesn't run combo lines. (I also play pod in that deck too, making room for both)
It's probably unplayable trash in 60 card formats.
This set is do exciting to me, because the cards seem powerful in specific strategies. Not much looks format warping.
Necropotence doesn't combo with Sheoldred.
Sheoldred plus The One Ring is a great combo, because you're netting 1 life for each card you draw. The same is true for Necrodominance. You pay X life to draw X cards and you gain 2X life.
If The One Ring kills Necrodominance, then Sheoldred definitely resuscitates Necrodominance. Once both are on the table, you're pretty much guaranteed to draw however many cards you want. The only thing it doesn't grant you is protection.
1:55 I think y'all were starting to get it a while back but are again missing the big picture. Modern is the new Legacy/Vintage. Just actually supported, and more controlled, for now. Thus, the commander precon cards slowly flowing into the format.
I'd be more excited about MH3 if 1) there were more older cards printed into modern, and 2) there were cards that cleanly answer Ring and Bowmasters.
What about birthing ritual as a information effect? Just being able to peek 7 deep is worth something. Just by having ways to shuffle like fetches makes this information super valuable, can you imagine every turn knowing what your next 7 cards will be and being able to plan ahead with that information?

For as long as mtg has existed, the majority of cards in any given set have and are never going to see competitive play so why do we act like every card that isn’t competitive for 60 card formats but not bad enough to just be relegated to draft chaff fodder bins need to be looked at like it’s explicitly made for commander unless it has actual commander related text in the rules?
By your standards, we would’ve called so many sets in years past a “commander set” like khans of Tarkir or Alara. “Oh this clash mechanic in lorwyn is so silly, iT mUsT bE For CoMmAnDeR”.

Necrodominance also shuts off Aristocrat strategies as well.

Ulamog off of creativity style effects lets it see itself for its etb. Its weird as hell but it works as its a replacement effect. 17/17 annihilator 10. Could be good, could be flat worse than archon.
While i have a distinct hate for all variations of free spells, the new ones seem "kinda" ok and i am curious if there is a colorless one, considering the heavy colorless theme that is present in the set (devoid in particular).

you have to pay 1 energy*, so with a card that gives an energy on ETB. like the new one drop its infinite.

I actually think the opposite. They said last year that bowmasters was a problem and they were going to ban everything around it. That's probably because they wanted it around to keep necro-2 and other stuff from this set in check.

I personally think Birthing Ritual will play better than it looks. You guys are too focused on combo decks that need to tutor for one specific card. You can use Birthing Ritual in a normal creature or midrange deck and then it upgrades one of your creatures for free every end step.
I'm not saying it's busted but I'm interested in trying it. It's probably still not good enough because 7 deep is not a lot of looks. If it was digging 10 deep then you wouldn't "whiff" as much.

My biggest hope is that Bolt, Memory Lapse, and Counterspell get reprinted at common or uncommon in this set so that they'll be downshifted from Rare on Arena.

@@starmanda88I think there's some hope given that other Mystical Archive cards got reprinted like Lightning Helix. Helix is obviously a far cry from the other three, but it is a precedent at least.
Idk ab some people but im very glad wotc saw how badly modern horizons 1 and 2 power crept the format and decided to tone it down for 3 these cards are by no means stupidly broken like fury or ragavan but they are powerful fun cards and thats cool!

Modern hasn’t had any thunder to steal for 20 years. MTG is commander. If you play any other format, you do so knowing you’re the niche sub-community.
I think Modern players are right to be angry about edh cards being MH3. Especially because MH3 already has edh decks. So from my pov MH3 should have NO cards designed for EDH. That's the key word: "designed for" edh. Obviously MH sets will always have powerful cards that will see edh play, that's unavoidable. What you can and should avoid is design cards for commander in a set that's supposed to help tier 3 decks in modern.
There's not many cards thankfully that you read and go "well this is unplayable everywhere except for casual commander" but there are enough to be annoyed about it.
Maybe my argument isn't super clear but I'm just saying they should have modern in mind when designing the base set cards. They should be designed, balanced and playtested with modern in mind.
You can still have legendary creatures that are great for edh, but don't make them with edh in mind.

Very cool card. Very obviously designed as an orzhov commander. It will never see any play in modern. I'm not saying Shilgengar shouldn't exist, but you should put it in a commander set and leave it out of the modern horizons 3 base set.
