    Hiking San Bernardino Peak is a bit different than most climbs in the San Bernardinos. You need a permit (easy to get), so there aren't any real crowds. It also offers some awesome camping options if you want to do the hike over two days. And of course, the views. San Bernardino Peak, at 10,649 feet, offers sweeping views of Mt Baldy, Mt San Jacinto, Big Bear Lake, and the Inland Empire.

    GET YOUR PARKING PASS AT THE STORE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE TRAILHEAD.
    Just got back from this today.
    Started midday yesterday, hiked to Limber Pine Bench campground, which is indeed awesome.
    I had it all to myself.
    Then today, up to the summit and all the way back to the car.
    There’s very little shade from trees, since most of the area burned.
    I would rate this extremely difficult if you’re backpacking camping gear.

    San Bernardino Peak should be included as the fourth Saint, it’s taller than Mount San Antonio (Baldy).

    Thanks for another great video - decided to do this hike early yesterday after watching it. The trail was in better shape than i expected after the last big fire, easily traversed with just a few fallen trees on the trail that were easily bypassed. The area above Limber Pine Camp was spared from the fire for the most part. As shown in the video, the views were awesome the entire way to the peak. Was surprised to find Limber Pine Spring partially iced over but still flowing. There are signs of the ecosystem recovering in the burned area which is neat to see. This hike is hands down worth the beautiful views you get to enjoy! Side note - The trail junction sign 4 miles in (1:41 in video) was "burned to the ground."

      Thanks and yea, this video is old, I'm due to get back and shoot an update. Hopefully can sneak that in before it gets klobbered with snow again.

      @@Hikingguy Hi Cris, looks like you missed that chance. How exposed would you say this trail is? I.e., any major cliff edges?
      I had a permit to do this on Sunday, but am very weary due to the incoming storm. I have microspikes and poles, but that's about it. I will be with someone who does not have any experience of snow hiking - though they will get spikes. If the trail isn't that exposed (I would consider the 3Ts to be exposed, particularly the climb up to Telegraph from Timber), I'd consider still giving this a go and turning around if it gets too sketchy. But if there's a lot of exposure, I'll give it a miss.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jakebrown3822 I'd give it a skip if you haven't hiked it in regular conditions first. Lots of dead trees, heavy snow, freezing, it probably won't be pretty after the latest precip.

    Looks an awesome hike, but at 10,650 feet id would think that would be high enough to pass the tree line. I like trees but not at the summit, looks like it somewhat obscured the 360 panorama views.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a pile of stones at the peak that you can climb up and see above the trees. And yea, it's not the typical peak, some low trees but still a fun one.

    Thinking of doing this as a day hike in next in 2 weeks or so, have done Wilson, Cucamonga, and Baldy. Is it safe to do solo (any animals or other hazards)?

      @tacocruiser4238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucasKimCARP The entire hike took a solid 7-8 hours (and i don't take many breaks). It was a much longer and more difficult hike than I expected. I was completely exhausted at the end.

    • @LucasKimCARP
      @LucasKimCARP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tacocruiser4238 yea, I can imagine. That is a long ass time. I did an 8 hour hike in Patagonia once and it was one of the hardest things I did. But then again I was carrying a lot of weight and had done a 5hr hike the day before. So I was already tired too. I believe I can do this though. It will be hard specially with the heat. Anything I should know? Too many gnats? Is the area dead from the fires?

    • @tacocruiser4238
      @tacocruiser4238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucasKimCARP You don't have to worry about bugs because there are no streams or lakes. Make sure you bring enough water because you won't be able to use a water filter.
      I would just recommend that you pace yourself going up. It seems like you have to ascend two different peaks before you reach the true top. I kept thinking that i was almost there but then I found out I had a long ways to go. It's one of those trails that just feels longer than it should be.
