My brothers and I just attempted that hike last weekend, and it looks much different covered in snow! It's so hard to follow the trail and switch backs, but it's also just so pretty. We're going to try again next year.
I am glad you visit all of the wilderness areas of Southern California Some people think that Southern California is just Los Angeles. I am up here in Northern California and I still just love seeing beautiful places in So. Cal.
Thank you Thank you. What a great memory jogger. I have done a summit hike 3 times with my boys. Nothing like it. It was so beautiful in 1980 85 and 95 but its a lot dryer now and not as appealing. A two day camp out hike is the best way to do it.
I’m from So cal but I live in Texas right now. We are a military family and we move all over. I really love your videos but they make me homesick, hence my name, lol. Thank u for all your videos. It’s Amazing how many cool things there are to do in Cali!
I have done this hike 3 times in the last year but only made it to the summit 2 of those as the good old altitude got to me on one of them. Great hike to prep for Whitney
I'm glad that you did both San G and San Bernardino Peak too. San Bernardino Peak is definitely incredibly underappreciated, and based on your videos, it seems like a way more interesting hike with beautiful scenery and absolutely breathtaking views as you get near the top. I grew up in Yucaipa at the base of these mountains and have always wanted to hike up both one day, but never got around to it/couldn't find people brave enough to take on the challenge with me. I've at least hiked up several miles on the Vivian Creek trail and I think the San Bernardino Peak trail we tried is called "Mormon Trail"(?). I can't be sure after all these years. Wow, that trail just went straight up up up. I thought I was in decent shape and discovered I surely was not. Summiting San G, San Bernardino, and San Jacinto is on my bucket list, for sure. Great videos! Keep 'em coming.
I did this very same hike many years ago on a weekday. I was all alone until just as I was leaving the peak two other hardy souls showed up. I remember the "false peak" where you get to a sharp bend in the trail and lo and behold you find that you have another ways to go. It's doable in one day but you need to be in shape especially if you're not acclimated to the altitude.
Thanks for another informative video. Unlike Shasta I have summited San Gorgonio - 50 years ago with my Dad and Boy Scout troop. We climbed it from the other side from Poop-out Hill. But it took twice. The first time we were denied by a late season May snowstorm. The route from the other side is quite scenic and doesn’t include as much elevation gain because you drive up into the mountains to the trailhead. One of the highlights I recall was hiking by the wreckage of a plane that had crashed on the flank. Interestingly, my Dad had previously attempted the Vivian Ck route in the 60s with an adult friend from church when I was little. His backpack had a wooden frame! Unfortunately, they were rained out on their summit attempt.
In my younger days I was a frequenter of the San Gorgonio wilderness. A friend of mien and I would usually make a three day trip out of it, that included getting to the summit of San G. We did spend the night on the summit once, and let me tell you it was the most miserable night of our lives. The wind decided to pick up and we lost one of our tents, never to be seen again. That was back in my days growing up in Riverside. I have since moved to Alaska and getting to a summit here is putting life at risk in the worst way. Both elements and wildlife can be overwhelming any time of year.
Haha I just completed this in the snow today and it was brutal for my knees. Overall very rewarding although it was extremely windy at the top. Can't wait to post my vlog about it soon!
i took the South Fork trail from near Jenks Lake. Its longer (21 miles round-trip!) than Vivian Creek but less steep. I started at sunrise and finished at sunset. The views are incredible.
That brought back memories . I did it in 3 days with 2 nights at High Creek Camp and that was over 3 decades ago. I saw big horn on day 1 while walking in at the High Creek Camp across the canyon. You did a good job of capturing it and showing the favorable spots and it looked like a almost perfect day. I don't know if I would do it in one day. I am going to do it again, thank you...
Well and nobly done! I grew up in SoCal and summited Old Grayback twice. I used to go up the Vivian Creek trail and down through Dollar Lake and to Poopout Hill. Two questions: 1) There used to be the wreckage of a DC3 on the side of the mountain (Vivian trail) 2)There were stone circles on the summit for hearty souls who wanted to sleep there all night. Are they still there?
Bravo!!!!!!! Congratulations on this great accomplishment Josh! it looked like a really hard hike; so would you do it again?? And great video, of course 😁
Thank you! It was a tough one but it was worth it. I would do it again in like a few years haha but not high on the list since there are so many other great peaks around the area.
That looks like a brutal hike! Congratulations! I can’t believe you are going to do the Rim to Rim too! Can’t wait to see that video! What a great video of the hike. Thanks for sharing.
Josh - really enjoying your vlogs of all kinds of adventures, but hikes are my fave. That is is a beast of a hike! Congrats, man! I've only done it once as an overnight. Thanks for taking us all along and giving me some great ideas for new adventures.
Love videos like this. So informative and shows you every step of the way! I'm going to start training to climb this. Have a while since the forest is closed but now I know what I'm up against!
You really should get a Gopro helmet Josh and borrow your dads walking poles...but thanks for the awesome journey, well done cheers from Western Australia
go to the good will to get a long sleeve shirt like $7 take off the t-shirt and put the dress shirt on it's like having nothing on but protects you from the sun real light button every other button lets the breeze cool you off try it

So many great wilderness areas in SoCal but I think Northern California has the best wilderness areas!

Thanks for the comment, I agree California has so many amazing things to do! I bet there are some fun spots in Texas as well?
Completed this hike 2 times in 2018! The views are great but the hike sucks when you come to realization that the walk down is a mission

Great hike done summer camp YMCA in my teens.

Spectacular. Loving our So. Cal.
I was winded and sweaty just watching this hike
Can't wait to sign that registry form on a winter hike, camping on the summit!
Beautiful 😻
Took that route a couple months ago and it was much tougher than I had expected. No acclimation before reaching altitude can wipe you out!
That is for sure true, it is a tough one.
What a beautiful place! Nice vlog! Hopefully one day me and my wife can go there one day!
Thanks for watching, it was a beautiful area.
Thank you, very nice video. This hike is in my bucket list. Can’t wait to hike it with my friends, Las Chingonas😊
Thank you! Its a tough one but it is beautiful
It’s a killer hike! Love going there & just hiking for a few hours. Great cardio & beautiful scenery 💟 Great vlog 👍🏼
That looks like a brutal hike! Congratulations! I can’t believe you are going to do the Rim to Rim too! Can’t wait to see that video! What a great video of the hike. Thanks for sharing.

Perfectness
Great video. This is an awesome hike. It's getting busy from Vivian Falls.
It really is. I had heard that it was getting really popular and I passed a lot of people on the way up and down. It's a tough hike to be so popular.
Wonderful scenery! 💙💚
wow the trails looks like a trail in BC Canada! Also great jobbing that hike!
This was AWESOME! One of your best videos thus far. LOVED IT!!! Can't wait to summit Gorgonio next year!
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say! It was a long hike and video so I am glad it was worth it.

I did this hike years ago in my early 30’s. It was a bitch, but an accomplishment.
Beast !!! thankyou for this video !! I heard this hike is hard as shit !! you just confirmed it !! Great Vid Josh !
I think when he said “ that’s a point of interest” that was Dobbs peak
I wonder if all this forest is burned down now from the Dorado fire.

Have you ever done that hike after a down pour??
Kirby is my hero
The dab master showed up in the comments!
How tall is mountain San Gorgonio because it is pretty high up from the city of Riverside faraway from the distance where I live?

Cell reception ok?
Basically no cell reception except for one or two spots on the trail.
So you dont use trekking poles and you don't buckle your pack? Try it. You'll feel the difference.
I bet your feet and legs were smoked on the way down
