As a youth i played sports for fun, but never had the drive, passion or intensity i did in my early 30's. At that age i became to respect process more and got alot better with my confidence and mindset. Thusly i was able to push past all of what i thought were old "limits" by alot. At least Mark Rippetoe can't blame him for not being strong enough to do weightlifting. There's 2 scenes in this video that denote when Clarence starts taking PEDs - (1) when he's on a cycle towards the 60% of the video and (2) when Eoin hits us with the Suspicious. Everything after that is him enhanced.
I am not an expert in olympic weightlifting, but out of curiosity I would like to know if olympic weightlifters involve bench press in their training and if so why? What specific effect does the bench press have on performance in olympic weightlifting?
Many oly weightlifter don’t have a focus of bench press. Look up interviews from Chinese athletes talking about bench press. They don’t do it. To them it’s not necessary. But honestly you’re going to get a different opinion from everyone. I personally still do bench press because i’m not a competitor, have good mobility, and just do oly weightlifting for fun
Ive seen weightlifters train for hypertrophy with dips push ups overhead presses push presses and maybe close grip bench but probably never just a regular str8 up powerlifting style bench, at least not the super high level ones
Some weightlifters sometimes like to bench bc of the movement's overload potential to increase general upper body strength. I believe this would be most common in Russia. Or maybe I'm just thinking Klokov (he was certainly different when it comes to his training). The Chinese not only don't bench, they also very rarely overhead press. The only strength related pressing movement they'll regularly do is heavy weighted dips. The other countries should generally lie in between these extremes but I don't expect anyone to bench more than once per week. Like others said, benching can affect your mobility but you can also mitigate that or else there wouldn't be people who bench a lot with good mobility.
It depends really. The Russians do some bench pressing during GPP phase to increase general upper body strength (I believe Okulov does bp even during comp phase or at least close to it because he likes the movement a lot), while the Chinese lifters don't do it at all. Heck, they don't even train OHP that much according to Lu! Anyway, while the bench press might negatively affect ones upper body mobility, I'd say for us amateurs it doesn't really make any difference. The pros don't do it (at least outside of the GPP phase) simply because there's little to no carryover to snatch and c&j.
I'm glad Clarence has dedicated himself to what he loves, but God damn i bet he could've been worth 10 of millions if he played Football (soccer), he's so explosive and coordinated
Imagine having a 446 pound bench and not even training for it lol That right there is the craziest to me. Even him being on gear can't deny his crazy work ethic and genetics.
@@germanrud9904 If that were the case strongmen would be putting up higher numbers on bench, but I think most are in the 500lb range, since they don't train that movement as much. in deadlifts they're king but in bench not so much.
@@victorsoto4821 sheesh, did you read what you wrote? The reason they are in the 500s or whatever, which generally speaking linearly corresponds with their body weights, for a movement they don't train, is excellent. You said it yourself. Strongmen dont bench much. They value vertical pressing much more. Bench is the only compound that scales with bodyweight. Deadlifts and squats do not. You don't need to be huge to be put up excellent numbers at either lift, but benching statistically is shown to lie in direct proportionality to bodyweight, with some outliers obviously.
@@germanrud9904 I was responding via phone at work, so excuse the typo's but yes I get what you're saying. Nonetheless for Clarence to be walking around 100kg at most when he pressed that 446 pound bench without much training was pretty damn good. I do know that eddy hall has put up a 600+ bench press, just crossed my mind, so yes I'd agree that bench is one of the compound movements that scales best with bodyweight.
The craziest thing is that he done this without web input creativity. He was backflipping, and doing all that training in his garden whitout anybody that could push him to prove something.... having obsessession that guide you in a street unknowed by nobody around you, that's the craziest beautiful thing

Nice video, by the way - I hope Clarence has seen it
Love Clarence the dude is an absolute legend but he was clearly on the “sauce” in his teens throwing up that monstrous weight. I’m surprised it’s so hard for you fitness “gurus” to point out that someone is clearly taking performance enhancement.
@@rochoddo5380 Thats not the issue its how Clarence does it. At almost 50 im squatting over double bodyweight for reps. Is he enhanced? If so, why is he juicing as he doesnt compete? And now the dude injured his shoulder likely due to these olympic lifts. This Clarence kid should start powerlifting as it is safer.
People dont care everyone is a spectacle for someone else. I look online and see creatine is sold out at sup stores in Calgary. People want some perception of recognition, thing is recognition by self centered people is irrelevant. Now that Clarence isnt lifting huge weights overhead due to injury likely people dont care. Cold cold world.
@@5zazen He is enhanced, he's been quite transparent about that in the past. Why would anyone need to compete to justify juicing? People can juice for whatever reasons they choose.
I just don't get why he didn't stay clean longer. He is a freak of nature for the US, let alone a much smaller country like Ireland. Why not go to the Olympics once? Then you can do all the gear you want. Doing gear before the age of 25 might also limit his overall potential. I do really appreciate his integrity though.

I'm looking through your videos do you have any exercises that increase ankle mobility so as to improve squat depth
Yep! Check out these videos 👉 th-cam.com/video/jpy1c2s5F8Y/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/5CHqhFMTfGA/w-d-xo.html
I wish tricking and parkour got more recognition from other sports.
If you want to see some high level parkour check out: Tim Champion, Daryl Stingly, Callum Powell, George McGowan, and Team Phat (which has a lot of athletes).
I'm not sure who is big in tricking these days
Tim champion
Haha I remember him from ninja warrior, he was smashing it to be fair
When i earned my CSCS in 1996 weightlifting was not very popular. Clarence as a young person is great on his skills. TH-cam doesnt represent reality except to the twenty something crowd. Hopefully when Clarence is my age, 50, he isnt swamped by mortgage concerns and real world stuff.
I'm a simple man, I see video on strong anime irish man, I click
simplicity that excites
Clarence my beloved
For reference, and he's talked about this. He started enhancing with PED's after his triple bodyweight squat.
Fire like always 🚬🔥
Clarence 💪🏽 my favourite lifter.
Dude half the comments under his videos say "Ah, my favorite hydraulic press channel" love it every time
Great video!
How does a typical week of training looks like for Nicholas Singleton?
Thanks
clarence is around 100kg/high 90s and this is without a weight cut , clarence has snatched 190 now is his all time best 225kg c&j or he might have done 227.5 cant remeber but can confirm 190 snatch is real he literally is around wr if he cut down his weight and competed but it is to note he does take peds but we know all the top do as well, CLARENCE IS A BEAST GOD BLESS THST MSN I HOPE TO SEE BIGGER LIFTS FOR HIM. especially i thik hes got a few more kgs in the c&j
also lets not forget clarence has stayed motivated all these years putting up close to the worlds best without competeing
His PR is 195
Clarence Kennedy is a Ninja. You see him move you will feel that he is the Mike Tyson of strength sports. All rounder. Lifts world level heavy weights and moves like an gymnast with strecthing n mobility is not even in his routine.
Could you also make a video reacting to Toshiki Yamamoto? He is also a phenomenal back squater
Great suggestion!
That would be interesting...
I only started attending olympic weightlifting group because of Clarence. Seriously.
His form is so beautiful its like he was built for the snatch and C&J
Clarence is something else
Quality content, thank you.
11:11 I think this is when he starts cycling lol
aside from all the activity he did in his youth, there has to be massive genetic potential here. I mean such a massive lifts at only 17. And all the heavy training through the years without breaking his body...amazing
juice notwithstanding, he's the definition of built different
This guy’s amazing. Lifting serious man weights as a teen. Damn!
Clarence is a f**king super hero.
Clarence was also a really accomplished hurdler and sprinter. Think he might have won national u18 110m hurdles
Really? You know his 100m time?
I've heard someone say before that tricking is an artistic expression of martial arts movements
That's exactly how i started weight lifting 😇
11:08 is when he hopped on gear. He said this in a Patreon video - hence the random "cycling" clip.
Great, my 35 years old’s PRs are his when he was 16. Not sad at all.
I'm pretty sure the scene where he's riding the bicycle and Eoin says "suspicious" is when he started on cycle.
There's 2 scenes in this video that denote when Clarence starts taking PEDs - (1) when he's on a cycle towards the 60% of the video and (2) when Eoin hits us with the Suspicious. Everything after that is him enhanced.
I don't really care about snatches and am trying to improve my clean. Would snatches improve my clean or should I just focus on the clean?
I would focus on the clean and its variations
If you wanna get better at cleans you do more cleans
If i remember correctly, Clarence said he started taking gear around the time his snatch was 160KG, im like 95% sure.
I am not an expert in olympic weightlifting, but out of curiosity I would like to know if olympic weightlifters involve bench press in their training and if so why? What specific effect does the bench press have on performance in olympic weightlifting?
it decreaces range of motion temporarily
You also need to be good at football
Imagine having a 446 pound bench and not even training for it lol That right there is the craziest to me. Even him being on gear can't deny his crazy work ethic and genetics.
It's not THAT crazy when you think he can lift that overhead
I get he's not training bench but stabilising that much weight overhead is much harder
bench scales with bodyweight and overall strength
Clarence is just too powerful
The craziest thing is that he done this without web input creativity. He was backflipping, and doing all that training in his garden whitout anybody that could push him to prove something.... having obsessession that guide you in a street unknowed by nobody around you, that's the craziest beautiful thing
Great video man🙌
You should talk about kettlebell
any specific to kettlebell training?
I'm interested in KB sports but it doesn't seem to be popular outside of the former USSR. But anyway I'd appreciate anything that you want to share on this piece of equipment
Do you have any programs that are not monthly?
We do. You can check out our Program Library here 👉 www.garagestrength.com/pages/program-archive - You can scroll down to our weightlifting programs
When I watched the video I noticed that around 2015 he is on bike and then some dude says suspect. I think this could be him noting that this is where he stopped being natty and started "cycling".
11:10 clip of him "cycling" and the other guy (sorry forgot his name) says "suspicious". I think this is him hinting that this was when he started taking gear lol.
Some people just don't like competition and would rather just fk about for fun. I'm not saying that Clarence falls into that category but for me personally, the thought of doing anything remotely competitive has me almost going into a panic attack. Nice video, by the way - I hope Clarence has seen it
id also like to know what age hw started using PEDS.
I'd love to see Clarence and Juji do a collaboration!
They have done several videos together :)
@@HerbanFarmer420 cool! Thanks for letting me know. I'll go check them out.
He had the world's fastest natty or not responce, someone asked in a live stream if he used PED's and he said "yes"
Kind of curious if Larry Wheels could possibly beat clearance at powerlifting if he trained for it for 3-6 months
Larry is alteady way stronger at powerlifting than clarence since clarence is not a powerlofter
Such a cool guy, hes definitely got good genetics. good mobility. 100% taken performance enhancing roids. Would be cool to lift with him though.
Hi coach can you make a new expolisive lower body workout for 100m sprinters
thanks for the suggestion!
Btw Clarence was asked in a Q&A video if he was natty, and he said no...
ong same and i was 8-10 years old addicted
second scene of him on his bike is when he started cycling.
Amazing lifter
Rumor has it Clarence trained Jiren for the tournament of power.
I love Clarence, he is honest about his PED use, he lifts crazy numbers, he is asthetic af and his lifting is just as asthetic.
He explains it all in some of his videos about why he didn’t want to compete even when he was clean. Mostly IWF/WADA/IOC corruption.
