Sad that he lived in the era of Semmangudi otherwise he would have reached greatest heights. His untiring effort in popularizing Muthuswami Dikshitar & Papanasam Sivan compositions to the music world without expecting any returns is a lesson for all musicians 🙏
SSI was great, but also had a great ego. That he had such success, inspite of an unpleasant foghorn voice is a testement to that ego driven hard hard work and competitive perfectionism; and also the way humans, South Indian as well as anyone else, worship the false idol of celebrity....DKJ, like his sister, was a humble person. Not everyone needs or seeks acclaim. I suspect DKJ, who did well enough for himself, was a fundamentally happy person, he always has that sweet smile. SSI? never looks happy, tbh.
I have been hooked to DKJ s Navavarna for the lat 2 years continuously. DKJ has put into the rendering such a divine effort that the listener feels it is Dikshitar himself singing. It is sad DKJ did not get his due recognition. Navavarna and Panchabhuta Linga Kritis show that he is second to none. The bhakti profusely flowing thrugh. I am guilty of not writing my thoughts.
No doubt dkj is great. And we should be indepted to him for rendering several krithis in pure padanthara. But was he a popular concert musician ? Did he display the creativity that classical music begs for ? I would doubt that seriously, with due respect to him.
Sir, DKJ spent much of his prime as a pin-pattu- to his legendary elder sister. May be he ventured out as an artiste by himself late. Leaving that aside, popularity (it is bhavat-varam) creativity or lack of it and I did not refer to popularity aspect. Also recording is an important element - for eg., DKJ's navavarna recording could have provided double myk to DKJ and the effect would have been better - with lyrics coming out more clarly. one can Dikshitar's lyrical majesty in greater measure. . My views were as a token of reverence to the way Navavarna kritis (in entirety) was sung an intensity (bhava) which took me to a trance.
Recognised or not he remains as one of my favourites.So much sowkhyam in his singing.Not all popular singers are great.Not all great singers are recognised.To each his own. Isn't it?
What a co incidence that I felt Sri thyagaraja himself is singing when I heard dkj singing his pancharatna krithis and now after hearing the kamalamba navavarnam that a similar Rasika has expressed his devotion to dkj that he hears Sri dikshitar's voice!!!! That is the best tribute to dkj the mahan !!!!!!!
There is something unexplainably divine and majestic about all these renditions. DKJ sir's sincerity and devotion clearly shines like the golden ornaments of Kamalamba. The accompanists have also done an excellent job at bringing out the sheer majestic gait of the compositions and of Devi. After hearing these renditions, not only does a student learn them easily, but we are blessed by Kamalamba herself. One feels satisfied by listening to these. Sri Kamalamba Jayati. 🙏🏻

Jayaraman & his disciples ( can recognize the voice of Smt. N.Mahadevan). The crystal clear Sanskrit diction, adherence to melody scheme with gamakas and great instrumental support makes this album addictive. Thank you all very much for sharing this wonderful gem of devotional carnatic music.
