I definitely skipped over some features in this video, mainly because I was focusing on the feel and sound of the synth versus what you can do with stereo width controls etc. So keep that in mind, it's not an exhaustive review of every feature in the Mantis, it's an overall feel/vibe of the sound and how it plays.
Just had my first hands on with it this weekend and was amazed by what had been missed in so many demoes...just how off the beaten path this can go by pushing it. The combination of features (almost all sat right there in front of you) really opens up when you look at it with fresh eyes and try to do things you shouldn't. And it gets aggressive really quickly...Trent Reznor would love it...felt like a Pro-1, CS-15 and MS-10 ganging up on a Grandmother. Hopefully it overcomes the pricing barrier and reaches a wider audience!
You and I agree on many things with this synth. But I wrote one hundred patches with it that absolutely blew my mind! It’s in some ways like a putney vcs 3 . And the sync is terrible which is bizarre because it is automatically detected ( or so they claim ) and in the description is discussed and bragged about as one of its super powers but sadly it’s just not accurate with external clock so I sent it back ..that said the synth is dripping with character that also sits extremely well in a mix . If Paul and company would actually give it the firmware it deserves so all modulation source’s sync to clock ( including looping envelopes) it would be a classic for sure in this category of synths ! 👽✌️
@@Farold_Haltermeyer I updated it but it wasn’t beat sync it was or is an advanced kind tap tempo which is way to start on four and it kinda works but as far as accurate sync especially with the envelopes looping the arpeggiator etc it isn’t really that great and definitely isn’t looking for external clock which it was supposed to like a super power but if it’s close enough for you great ! 👽✌️
Thank you! I just try to make it a personal conversation about the gear. Like if we were to start up a chat in the hallway about synths and music. I appreciate you watching 🙏
@@teftymusictech no sweat i appreciate the hardwork and dedication. I ended up going with a wavestate 2 instead of Mantis. Pretty psyched seems like one of the craziest synths on the market right now
Cool synth but in the price bracket wise for character synth, I think 💭 I’m going to get the TEO-5 I personally like it has a sequencer and the sound is perfect to my ears 👂 but it is a unique synth the mantis.
Ive been looking everywhere. But none of the videod have produced one sound that I liked. It seems to have potential for grand and aggressive sounds but everyone chooses organ and wah filter sweep sounds or an accordion.
I've watched and read a lot about it. TBH, I think MSRP for it is far too high for what one gets, even if that particular character would otherwise be a good fit for one's work.
Mmmm - another synth that just blurs into the rest. How far can we go go with resonant filters? Sure it sounds nice, but also do lots of other cheaper bits of gear.
Let me check my summary: 1. All synths have oscillators, filters, and keys on them; 2. Some are more expensive than others. While it's far harder to contribute than to complain (and frankly that's the job of us practitioners), I wonder if you have a particular novel architecture you're hungering to see in a commercial synth?
@@bensupper Well, I know what you mean, :) My first synth set up was back around 1978 with an MS20, MS10 and SQ10....However, I sold them for a spectacular price many years ago and I went down the modular route, ending up with the equivalent of two monster cases .... So after espaping the gas on that rabbit hole I went over to using an MPC and a modwave as my main sound sources. A bit different, though hardly 'novel'. Damn it if I didn't just order the wavestate module to go with it all! LOL I like the modulation possibilities. I will ignore the 'us practitioners' comment as maybe I am misconstruing your meaning by hinting that I am not part of that club? @@stevekirkby6570 Good to meet you. It was possibly one assumption too many, but I turned Chris's proof of concept into this product, and there aren't many of us in the trade.
@@bensupper Got ya Ben and see your angle. Keep up the great work and sorry if I seemed negative; I guess everything is expensive to produce now. Thinking back to the previous comments of structure - what would be cool is if someone made a 'west coast' synth architecture in a module or keyboard. I guess Moog have had a go as well as a few others... but Buchla style without the price is still eluding me (obviously modular got me there, at a price)... but for the mass market, a buchla style mixed with some sample/wavetable stuff would be a must buy. What do you think?
Probably the most uninspiring synth of late... everything is good but overall.... i mean ok i got it it's unique in some way but kinda... dunno, same bracket as Uno Pro or something... but if you are the fan of OSCar type sounds...than probably yes

Wavestate is a deep synth! You can get lost in that machine for years lol have fun!
Just subbed solely based on the fact you have a wife too lol and work together.
