Josh has found there are some tropical species that will thrive where he lives, in Perth’s hot, dry climate.
He visits Coast Road Palms, a 4-hectare oasis of green, started on a dry dusty horse paddock over 30 years ago by founders Lou and Connie Varischetti. Now their son Daniel manages the business.
Lou was obsessed by palms and planted taller Bangalow and Canary Island palms to protect the understory from frost. There are now hundreds of species - and flocks of peacocks and guinea fowl to keep snails, slugs and caterpillars under control.
Silvery foliage is a good indicator of a dry-tolerant palm, such as the Bismarck palm from Madagascar. Once established, these only need watering once a month, so they are also a good choice for areas where there are water restrictions or low annual rainfall.
Another pick is the triangle palm (named after its triangular-shaped trunk) - also from Madagascar. Daniel recommends this super-hardy palm for beginners.
Foxtail palms, native to northern Queensland, will also tolerate drier conditions.
Smaller option palms include the miniature date palm from Asia, which only grows to 2-3m and has an interesting, textured trunk.
Palms transplant relatively easily, will do well in pots, and some will cope with indoor conditions, including the lady palm, cascade palm and bamboo palm.
    Featured plants:
    Bismarck palm (Bismarckia nobilis)
    Triangle palm (Dypsis decaryi)
    Foxtail palm (Wodyetia bifurcata)
    Miniature date palm (Phoenix roebelenii)
    Cascade palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum)
    Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa)
    Bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)

oh so sweet the son. very shy. amazingly created and cared for nursery/garden considering the climate. although the amount of irrigation needed is unfortunate for such a dry area.
