@@paullindemeyer3913 I wonder how come? I came here by "chance". I wasn't aware of this author, though I've been looking for solid arguments against the concept of diversity because I fully share his argument that the concept of diversity is obscuring the far more pressing problem of inequality. So what called my attention to him? I googled his name after I found an interview with him online in Germany's super-silly woke national daily paper: "taz" (pretending to be "left", "progressive", "ecological" and "divers") and before I could finish the interview I said to myself I have to research the background of this author first before I go on reading. And this is how I came here and I am really greatful for that. The German translation of W.B. Michaels' The Trouble with Diversity" has been published in August 2021 in Germany. Late but at least. They have distorted the title by translating "trouble" with "Trubel" which doesn't mean trouble but just "hurly-burly". Trouble would be "Problem" or "Ärgernis" (nuisance) in German. So how do you get a debate started? Publication of books, articles, translations, offering interviews particularly to those papers that support views that are opposed to your views. And the newspaper had at least the decency to conduct an interview with Michaels, which should go without saying but which is rare today.
For reference: Berea College's tuition policy: "If admitted to Berea, you will receive a 4-year tuition scholarship. This scholarship is combined with financial aid you may receive as well as any other scholarship you may be awarded by outside parties or organizations to cover 100% of tuition costs for four years of enrollment. For most Berea students, the 4-year tuition scholarship amounts to nearly $100,000 over four years."
Biggest tension is that schools need to keep power in society, and if you don't treat it as a business, then it loses its strength in the market of society. So, much like any corporation, you broaden your demographic market with wokeism, but then ignore the prejudice of your revenue and what that entails.
17:00 et seq.: egalitarianism is not meritocracy. we're right to be troubled with the idea of meritocracy, because someone somewhere is always trying to sneak in the idea that "certain human beings do not deserve the basics of life."
Seriously this lecture was given on this incredibly timely and controversial subject 10 years ago and there are only 20 comments? Everyone seems to have opinions no lack of diversity there what we have a lack of is ability to reach agreement on how to solve our many divisive social order problems. Dialogue is a good first step that alone is never enough, we actually need convergence and congruence and rebuild social and cultural consensus. I think the only good answer is not regressive mono culture or multi cultural confusion and conflict but a pan cultural (radical centrist holistic liberal) (parallel systems and culture of Democratic capitalism and Democratic socialism) universalism. We have a vision of social justice that isnt about social justice man truer words were never spoken! So long as the world is divided between the super winners and the rest of the population who are victims and losers of the class supremacist competitive capitalist game, we at looking at dystopian hellscapes as far as the eye can see.
This guy dare to talk about class in america, someone get him!
i think he "got got" well enough. Years went by without the benefit of the conversation he was trying to get started.
