  • Making it big in the music industry isn’t an easy task. For every musician lucky enough to find lasting success, there are thousands out there who never even come close. Then there are those who are able to record a single hit, only to fade away into obscurity shortly thereafter.
In the ever-changing music business, being a one-hit wonder is one of the worst fates imaginable. For many of these musicians, their careers could have taken off, if only they had lived long enough to make that followup hit. These are the one-hit wonders you didn't know passed away.

Talk Talk had three top 40 hits in the UK, aside from "It's My Life." "It's My Life" twice reached #13 on the UK charts. But only once hit #31 on ATF. Not a potent top 40 act. However, Hollis & Co. earned accolades from prog rockers not only for going prog and jazzy, but just as much for turning their backs on synth-pop, which prog-rockers hate. When you're a prog-rocker, the music you hate (which is most of it) is as important as the music you like. Myself, I think Talk Talk's synth-pop and the later prog-rock stuff is all par excellence!

My absolute favorite was... *Minnie Riperton* . Something seems unfair about her relatively early departure from this world. 'Lil side story... Years before I attended a high school in Chicago, CVS, I learned that she swung by to pay a surprise visit, to see for herself why our band was considered to be the best in the city for years. It's reported that she was so struck by the high quality of their performance of her music, which included "Loving You", that she was overwhelmed by emotion and cried in front of the young musicians. It was said that she didn't realise the impact she made on the youth in her own hometown. R.i.p., we're *still* Loving You....42 yrs later and still counting. Dan Hartman also had two big disco hits in the 70s Relight My Fire and Instant Replay, both tracks were huge dance floor hits and today considered classic disco records.

Blind Melon were so much more than just No Rain. The debut is a great album that went 4 times platinum in America. Songs like Change and Tones Of Home stand the test of time. Their second album Soup is the most underrated album of the 90s imo. Shannon also sang on Don't Cry by Guns N Roses and was in the video for the song.

Maybe an unknown passing to younger millenials and Gen Zers, but his passing in 1995 was VERY big news--I've always known of Shannon's passing, and I think many other Gen Xers and older millenials remember as well.

@@djdavemick It definitely was big news at the time. I had just started high school in September 95 and Shannon's passing was mentioned in our yearbook that year. Also the MuchMusic Intimate & Interactive had just happened also in September. I'll always remember watching it live.

In my humble opinion, Shannon Hoon was one of the most talented singer/songwriters in the history of Rock music. Blind Melon is my favorite band. Shannon was special, and they were only scratching the surface of what they could have been. They were a talented band full of amazing and talented musicians.
