    First I’ve ever heard of this described as well as you did. Can’t wait to try it... have always been trying to rotate the ball counterclockwise vs. rolling it forward like this... can’t seem to get my speed up above 16-17mph but I bet this will help! Appreciate it!

    Many, many thanks JR for the most concise and clear explanation of this fundamental modern release that I have come across to date. I began incorporating the "yo-yo" mechanics today which proved successful as I bowled a 210 game and several in the 180 neighborhood. An added bonus that happened quite naturally today was the realization that pin fall ratios are intrinsically determined ball speed/rev rate compatibility. Meaning, pin fall can suffer if my ball is hauling buns down the lane so fast that it doesn't have a chance to grab the lane. Thus, the "yo-yo release" approach has graciously opened the door for this armature to one of our sport's more refined aspects. Thanks again JR!

    Thank you for this. Here in Denmark, coaches still hang on to the pure usage of fingers to create rotations and I'm starting to lose my mind. I had to teach myself with the help of various youtubers like yourself in order to learn how to actually hook a ball - and it works! It's so much easier once you get the hang of it!
    Thank you!

      Just use more reverse pitch in the thumb when you drill the bowling ball.

      Just watch Bob Vespi bowl on youtube. Note the "elbow snap" for increased revs. He has a double jointed thumb. Now use more reverse pitch in the thumb hole when you get your bowling ball drilled. As you increase the reverse pitch you can use velcro tape the rigid side in the thumb hole. As you increase the reverse pitch you'll be forced to cup your wrist. I remember Robert Lawrence 5/8 of an inch reverse pitch in the thumb hole.

    Thanks, JR. I've watched this video a bunch of times and yesterday I finally had the "click" moment you talked about. What helped me was to hold my ball without the thumb in and simulate throwing it like that. Feeling the ball roll of my hand without the thumb helped really solidify the "click." Cheers to you! 🎉

    This is truly a high level skill, less than 5 to 10% of all bowlers ever get this high rev rate technique down properly, but once you do, it's PRICELESS!! A much more powerful & aesthetically pleasing form of bowling, than the "herky jerky" wild body & foot work of two handed style. Imo

    Thankyou very much for this video! Im a 15 year old high school bowler and average only 205 right now. I threw a 257 and 200 today in a match but my thumb is torn open right now. I get the right rotation but find myself with my thumb coming out the same time as my fingers. Some days I have trouble getting my ball to even do anything. I have a trident abyss and I clean it after every match or practice. I have always wanted to increase rev rate and I think this is one of the best explanations I've ever seen.

      Unless you're playing like 9+ games, your thumb shouldn't be tearing up like that (I like to keep a small bottle of moisturizer in my bag after I wash my hands at the end of the night) unless 1) you're still gripping too much at the release and/or 2) that thumb hole needs adjustment, maybe around the side of the knuckle.

      rev rate is entirely created by getting your thumb out on time. You're gripping the ball at two points, spin can not be generated until the first point, your thumb, is released. That should happen a moment before the bottom of the swing, follow through and the ball rolls off your fingers. IMO the most critical errors are trying to add velocity with muscle and not getting thumb out on time, which is usually the result of trying to muscle the ball. The height of your backswing should be the only factor in velocity then let gravity do its job and get your thumb out. Gravity moves objects at much greater speed than muscles, use it to your advantage. I also like enough spine tilt to release the ball at about ankle height. The big losses on speed and spin are when the ball contacts the lane, minimize the loss by releasing the ball at the bottom of the swing projecting it close to parallel to the floor. My best mechanics are hand inside the swing until thumb releases on time, maintain posture, follow through with fingers to the hand shake. Bowling is customizable experiment in practice take notes on what works for you put those pieces together for your optimal swing.

    • @The77Game
      @The77Game 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From my experience if you mess up your thumb when bowling you most likely have too big a thumb hole. That will make you feel like you have to squeeze the ball to not drop it. It also allows the thumb to bend a bit more which will put all the pressure on the knuckle and therefore it will rip the skin. All of this is of course only if the knuckle is where you tear your skin. IF it is then that would also explain why you some times experience that your ball isn't doing anything because squeezing the ball that hard will make it almost impossible to get the thumb out first. If any of what i said seems like it relates to you, go talk to your proshop about what to do about the thumb hole. Either get a new smaller one or use tape in the ball.

    I quit bowling almost 2 years ago because of battling Rev-rate issues, and rolling over my thumbhole. I've been bowling for 25+ years, drilling equipment in a pro-shop for 10+ years, and been throwing countless coaching sessions. This video is probably some of the best advice I've seen/heard to correct this problem in bowling.

    The easiest way is to increase the reverse pitch in the thumb. I remember Robert Lawrence (PBA member) used to bowl with 5/8 of an inch reverse pitch in the thumb hole. Remember you can always use velcro tape (the rigid side) in the thumb hole. Many PBA members did this like the late Dave D'entremont.

    to be honest...its not only a cupped wrist. with a straight arm you have no chance coming "under" the ball like most pros or 2hands. Its the "ellbow snap" and a well trained timing to do it. At the end you need less strong wrist as before with twice of revs. As somebody allready post down below. alot of japan/chinese videos you can find about that. And if you check this Video here from JR you can clearly see what iam talking about. Check 1:12 ...straight arm, just let the ball fallin..... (beginners revs) check 1:32...straight arm, a bit cupped wrist, focus on thumb comes out first....(most regular playing bowlers you can find on the lanes)......Check 1:47....a split second after backswing, bend elbow, dropping shoulder, cupped wrist and the release....check the right Video at the moment of the release...while the ball is swinging and at the last swing of the release its about 8 inches lower. this is because of the dropped shoulder. This art of release takes alot of practice and time.
    what i only wanted to say: its not just cupping a wrist. took me also some time believing some guys had terminator wrists ;) But its not. Its -just- a perfect match of timing =)
    my revs (checked with bowler ID) switched from 250/280 to 420/450.

      This is what i try to explain to my pupils, they all think it's about a strong wrist, while it's not. If you are doing it wrong, it will take a lot of power on your wrist, but once you can master it, you will notice it's taking less effort on the wrist. I got a few with wristband that are afraid to take it off

    • @teamx-bladz

      Couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s ALL about the ‘elbow snap’ and timing it properly. I have the skinniest forearms and wrists but I have 19 mph ball speed with a 500+ rpm rev rate. Even though I mostly use a slightly cupped wrist, I can still put a ton of revs on a bowling ball with an UNCUPPED wrist a la Mike Fagan. Which further emphasizes how important it is to have a properly timed elbow snap.

    Another tip is to do wrist curls in the gym with barbell with as heavy a weight as possible while maintaining perfectly form. Stand with barbell behind your back and rest on your hamstrings and held by your fingertips. Now curl the barbell and all the weight up until your wrist is in a cupped position. Repeat. 40lbs+ should be the goal. It will help with power of the release and give you more control on the ball.

Maybe even a spreadsheet charting rev rate increase/progress throughout the lessons. It'll feel more natural if you slow down your approach a bit and really work on making your arm swing a lot smoother. Also, as long as you can at least somewhat easily eject your thumb out of your bowling ball, you just need some extra faith that it will leave your hand; you shouldn't have to grip too much to keep the ball in your hand throughout your swing.

    I feel like this may be something I'm missing. I've always built up some pretty serious callouses on my fingertips because of how I learned to "lift" with my fingers through release. I'm going to try to focus on rolling out of the ball instead next time I hit the lanes.

If the lanes are dry it hooks just fine, however, if there is medium oil the Cutting Edge Pearl doesn’t hook much at all. This may be to my low rev rate at age 72. My question is if I purchase something like the STORM OMEGA CRUX will I be able to control the hook on medium to dryer lanes? What do you recommend? Thanks in advance!

    I don't think I change the release.

    • @christ9359
      @christ9359 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rev rate on a particular ball depends on the RG (radius of gyration), which is basically a measure of how much the ball resists being rotated. Asymmetrical balls have three different RG's, and are designed to be released rotating along the high RG axis and precess to the low RG axis. This means the rotation will be slow when released but pick up speed as the ball moves down lane. The difference between the high and low RGs is known as the differential. Symmetrical balls don't do the same thing, so typically the RG at release will be a lot smaller.

    hello,
    could you help me please? I don't own my own bowling ball but i like to go play in my local bowling area. I kinda developed my own way of throwing the ball using only two fingers with the thumb out. I mainly did this because with all the bowling balls at the center when i go in with 3 fingers, my hand is not stretched at all. the thumb hole is maybe 6 cm away from the other 2 holes, which makes it completely impossible to hook the ball using 3 fingers (at least to me that is.)
    problem is that when I use 2 fingers, i can't really lift the ball up really high because it will fall out of my hand (i fixate it on my arm usually). Second problem is that I can't seem to release the ball close to my foot it's always around 20-30 cm away..
    is it possible to properly hook (using 3 fingers) with bowling balls like the ones I described? All pro bowlers I see have their hands quite streched out when using 3 fingers.
    THanks for the help

    It's not how it "should" be, it's just a cheat if you don't have natural hand speed. I have always kept my wrist firm, and my rev rate when I was younger was around 480. Now that I'm over 40, it's down to about 420. Some guys just don't have natural hand speed. I get trying to generate more revs, but I disagree with breaking your wrist. If the wrist is broken, even for a split second, the release can fluctuate wildly. And not every pattern dictates the need of this type of release. With new tech, do you really need to generate crazy amounts of revs to hook the ball? Especially with the new ball layout rules?

Every professional bowler will tell you that the yoyo thing is very effective. And when i say that you could make an argument that you lose accuracy this way it is only in the beginning. When you practice a lot you will be plenty accurate. Sure, if you only bowl one or twice a month then maybe this isn't the way to go for you because you have to practice it a lot to get a good feel for it.

      Essentially you are allowing the ball to run off your fingers at release which gets the ball onto the lane faster, with more roll, & less energy being lost during the downswing by getting hung up on the thumb. It eliminates loft, too, which can cause your ball to slow down and not have a consistent lay down. This is something I teach my players, especially ones who have been bowling longer and have learned at least a firm wrist position in the downswing.
      This is also the reason I have gone to a 2hand approach, myself - more revs for my already high ball speed, as well as a more consistent lay down.
      Well done JR.
