Mate, you spoke from the heart there where you didn't have to which nearly brought tears to my eyes because you value South Africa and see its potential. Thank you 🙌🙏💚
Breaking news: The meeting has been postponed in a statement by SARU a few minutes ago. Thank god. This is egg on their faces. We, as the fanatical Bok supporters, should let our collective voice be heard in matters like these.
Excellent video Tim. Please don't do it SA.These guys are pirates...$75 is peanuts to them...they will eventually destroy the best thing to have happened to SA since Mandela.
I love that the "something" about South Africa and rugby can never be defined. It's honestly something you need to experience to understand. I'm a South African and can never explain it. Tim was intrigued by it, experienced it, LIVED it and still can't explain it. I just has that thing!
Thanks for the insights Tim, I am shocked SARU even considered this. Thank you to the unions for plain common sense. What we have in SA through the Springboks, may end up saving our great country, they are our greatest unifying force.
Completely agree with you. I would not trust ANY private equity connection. The strength of SA rugby is in its grass roots, even if poor relatively speaking, to what this deal could signify. It is a psychological/emotional paradox... strength lying in the relative absence of loads of cash. These private equity deals are useless and fake incentives. The focus should be on the ball (literally) and keep these "suits"'far away from the culture.
SA rugby has no price. It is the core. We have seen enough people pay us pennies for Our Natural Wealth. Enough. You can buy Our Clubs...you can't buy Our Minds and Souls. Tsek.
It's not that much as well, in the greater scheme of things, and even if it were multiple times more, remember it's funny money, a giant game of monopoly, credit created out of nothing, by their Fed, given to the various hedge funds and entities, to go out and make slaves, 'Pennies on the Dollar'...
Tim, thank you so much for using your platform to speak those kind words about SARU and SA in general. We as a country have our problems, but we live and breathe rugby. You're a true ambassador of our sport, and may your channel reach new heights in the future ❤
Agree Tim! Agree, agree agree. Thx for your voice in this matter and lets hope the powers that be find a better solution to the issues that face rugby all over the world.
It is so good to see that you have recognised how special rugby truly is in South Africa and to South Africans, at home and overseas. Thanks for spotlighting this Tim.
This a fantastic video and a very important conversation! Yes, I'm glad South Africa are saying to this absolute insult of a deal! Maybe 75million for 5% of the rights for 5 years would slightly more tolerable. But still
I agree with you insofar sponsorship is preferable to selling equity shares. But there is a snag. Obviously any company from any country can sponsor any team, but usually these companies are going to be based in the countries where they support the sport (think Castle Lager, MTN, Absa, Macsteel etc) And in our country, we have this 30% BBEE requirement, which serves to scare off investors - as we saw in the Starlink saga. So let's say you are a huge company like Tesla that wants to come to SA. Tesla is not going to give up 30% of their shares to "previously disadvantaged individuals" so in order to circumvent the BBEE legislation, they will instead form a new subsidiary, which we will call Tesla South Africa - a model every other automotive manufacturer has done. The long and the short of it is this: while Tesla easily has enough money to sponsor the Boks twenty times over, Tesla SA will not have anywhere close to the same financial muscle. The result? The biggest companies in our country are either too volatile (i.e mining companies that can have their net worth plummet based on commodity prices which is why you don't often see Anglo American or Murray Roberts sponsor major sports teams) or just not big enough (think Absa compared to Bank of America or Barclays). The current sponsor of the Boks is MTN and while they are a large company, they can't match the kind of coin O2 or Altraid can spend. The result is almost laughable: England's sponsorship deals is worth than twice the SA one, despite the fact that the Boks have won 3 of the last 5 world cups.
Tim, you say it as it is, love your thinking as a Brit, and will be a very sad South African if these financial deals go thru, but our national teams, for better or worse, are worth more than any deals made..Just as a matter of historical interest, the Boks, as we call em, were all originally from the Boer war against England back in the 18 hundreds as prisoners in SA, and challenged the English wardens to the game of Rugby, a town that originated the game, hence the town's name in the UK. They named themselves " Springbokken" and went on to win that very 1st game.. After the war, the"Springbokken" went on a boat, 3 months journey to England and won 91% of their games during over a year there. Gotta love your sentiment and love of the game.. Cheers boet, with high respect 🤩
I don't actually doubt for a second that there will be riots. Hell, considering that the news of this supposed possible sale just became actually public today, I won't be surprised if we see marches against this by tomorrow
Premiership rugby funding in England is an unmitigated disaster - following the CVC deal no one will invest in the league moving forward so once the exiting owners leave it’s finished. Well played SA if you’ve seen the light.
Good Day Tim i don't let my option see the day of light . But this is a happy opinion. I'm so glad Dr.Rassie is directer of rugby because he knows we cant sell the last thing that is valuable in south Africa. all S.A want are to be reconiced as good competing club teems. The supper rugby union kick us out to there demise. we(Dr Rassie) decided we need a top comp to compete in ,and the urc was right for the picking. the northern teams wanted to know how the southern team played. We both learned how each anther played. The reason why we wouldn't sell the springbok is because its SA. and the urc gave our club teams the money to get the spring bucks back playing for South Africa teams. i love seeing the star stated team running out for the bulls and sharks and stormers. all big names feels like the Currie cup of the 80's/90;s. And then you have a lions team not a lot of spring bucks. But wow what a team. raw talent. Hope they have enough money no keep them for two years. Very well structured argument. We need to see our stadiums filled like years gone by with supporters, investigate streaming deals with the big players. Not give away i.p for a short term gain that cripples SA Rugby long term.
Absolutely brilliant analysis Tim, this is what happens when you let the old amateurs run a professional game. Our big unions (Lions, Bulls, Sharks, WP) all have private equity partners, proper businessmen with a passion for their union and SA Rugby, from what I understand it is them that threw a spanner in the works. They have made a proper business decision to keep control - how on earth can anyone sell the rights to their national team. The UK is properly cocking it up in their sport though, how many of the Premiership and Championship Football teams are owned by foreign investors ? Too many
Thanks for explaining, Tim. I did always wonder what happened after all that Silver Lake noise in NZ and the CVC noise in Europe. Now I know. Hopefully we steer clear!
I KNOW it will be a bad deal! Within no time the money will be gone, nobody will be able to explain where it went, and then Saru will have to share 20 percent of profits.
Tim couldn't agree more - The Boks are special and enjoying a real brand resurgence. Priceless is the right word. You only want ppl in decision making positions that truly love Bok and SA rugby.
The attempt to stop this deal is gaining momentum. I read the letter sent to the President of SARU by Minister McKenzie, requesting a postponement of the meeting due to a growing public outcry and his Department being flooded with objections. Extracts of the letter are on the SA Rugby Mag website. At least the Minister is doing his job. This is a serious matter and the public's response is heart-warming. It seems that SARU will be going ahead with the meeting to vote on the matter. Let's see what happens next.
Might i add... There are very greedy people in this country that have a history of putting their pockets before the people... If the higher ups want money in their pockets, common sense will not prevail. Hope corruption doesn't win this time. 🙏
NZR Union sold equity to silver lake. But where is the revenue silver lake promised? POINT you never sell equity, you sell a share of the revenue in a commission like structure. NZRU stuffed up!
Love this content. You are the voice to the many voiceless South Africans. This is bad from the beginning!!! "Forever more!!!" Why were they even considering this offer in the first place to begin with?
I hate to raise politics in my beloved game, but let us not be naive. The ultimate owners of the Springbok brand is the government of the day. The Minister of Sport ultimately calls the shots. In this case, the corrupt politicians of the ANC. As in all the ruined semi-state corporations in SA, follow the money: SA Airways, SA Railways and harbours, Eskom, etc.
One may sell commercial rights, broadcasting rights etc. for any given defined time period. OK with me, as long as the price is right. However, selling WHATEVER forever (!) looks to me like a genuine deal with the devil...
I agree, but then the people should get more involved, not just watch the Springboks on TV. In all unions these decisions start from the clubs, the clubs appoint an EXCO and elect a Chairman, The Chairman goes to the Chairmans Council Meetings at their local Union, an EXCO for the Union is appointed from the Chariman's Council, The EXCO elects a President who represents the Union on the SA Rugby Council. etc etc... more people need to get involved at club level and work their way through, Rugby needs people to help it grow off the field as much as on the field
Absolutely NO DEAL, totally bad deal for SA Rugby, why would they sign up to such a terrible deal. Agree it will be rinse and repeat of the England and NZ

Hi Tim. I can tell you that the tremors started when the Bill Beaumont of SARU, Mark Alexander (who is on the list of a litany of disastrous SARU Presidential appointments including Jurie Roux and Oregon Hoskins,) announced the idea. I call him that because he is a hangover of an age that South African Rugby left behind a long time ago. I support the local Unions opposing the idea of selling the rights, because SARU seems incapable of generating, handling or disbursing in a responsible manner the now unreal income that the Springbok brand has delivered, because of one man and a team that bought in to it: I say this not because he is an incredible Coach. But if anyone can turn SARU around, then its him. And if anyone can turn the IRB around, then its him (but only after he retires as Bok Coach!) Then he can become President of the IRB and fix it. Because I tell you now, Rassie said "No. It's a kak idea." I'm not kidding: Rassie for President of the IRB.
