Plástico by Rubén Blades: Sal Cuevas Bass Line Playthrough

When you're talking about Siembra from Rubén Blades and Willie Colón, it's hard to pick a favorite track, but "Plástico" sits near the top of my list. Blades' lyrics reflect on a world that faces increased commercialization; he props up working class citizens while throwing some shade at the "plastic" individuals obsessed with wealth, fashion, and the surface. A brilliant arrangement from Colón emphasizes Blades' lyrics, makes the song exciting, and raises the bar on salsa aesthetics. The final piece of the puzzle is an inspired performance from bassist Sal Cuevas, who infuses an already complex line with his signature slapping, chords, and more. It's a rich track worth a deep study.
I've dived deep into this track with a transcription of Cuevas' bass line, learning every note and rhythm from this classic performance. There's a lot of technical aspects to the line that are worth noting, but there's also Sal's unmatchable sense of clave swing that gives the music its groove. I learned a lot from transcribing, learning, and playing this line along with the recording. There's nothing like digging deep into the music of a master and "Plástico" shows us a lot about Cuevas' bass style, as well as the depth of the writing from both Blades and Colón.
