This week, I’m going to be playing some walking bass over a holiday classic that is beloved in both jazz circles and pop culture - Christmas Time Is Here. Like many young people in the seventies, I was captivated by all the jazz performances that I heard in the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Since then, this has become a must-know holiday classic that gets played on jazz and pop holiday gigs alike. As usual, I’m playing the line on Double Bass here, but this is a great one to play on Bass Guitar too! Try playing this version - the music is on screen in both notation and tablature! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Lovely!!
Thank you so much my friend! This is easily my favorite Christmas song - it felt like it needed the chord melody treatment.
Awesome tone!
Thanks! I love the sounds of multiple basses playing at the same time - for me, the combo of six string electric and upright bass just hits that sweet spot. Glad you enjoyed it!
Every piece in this song contributes to it's vibe so much. One of the best music pieces ever made in my opinion
I agree with you whole heartedly. As a kid who didn’t grow up with much music around the house, the Charlie Brown Christmas specials were really my introduction to jazz. And this song in particular gave me chills every year. It’s just so poignant and fitting for the season. Vince Guaraldi really is an underappreciated genius.
@chipboazmusic for me it's the other way around. I grew up with music. Charlie brown isn't a staple in the netherlands so i discovered this album around 7 years ago. Been a huge fan of Vince from then on!
kinda looks like youre edging
WHY IS THE SNARE SO LOUD
Ha, yes, I could have done a little more detailed mixing on this. When the bass is playing those long notes, it creates a lot of space for things like the snare to come through. I should have automated that to come down for this section. Live and learn . . .
Lovely playing 😄
Thanks so much! This is actually an older clip and I haven’t played fretless for a while. I miss it. I’ve got some free time coming up and I’m going to get that fretless back in action. It’s so inspiring.
I use a felt pic for a bit of a softer sound
This is something that I haven’t really thought about - the type of pick that I would use. The idea of playing with a pick has been so challenging for me that I haven’t gotten that far! But I can see how that would make a huge difference. I’m going to try this out - I do like I less aggressive tone, so this might be the trick. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@chipboazmusic hope it’s useful for you.
great! thanks!
Thanks, glad you liked the video! This is a pretty fun tune to walk over, such a classic too!
Super wielkie dzięki 😊
Proszę bardzo! Cieszę się, że spodobał Ci się film!
Nice technique and great tone, Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. Such a fun melody to play - love soloing on this one too. There’s a piece of me that looks forward to holidays gigs so I get to play these tunes. Happy holidays to you!
Nice solo 😊
Thanks my friend! This was a fun gig - I love when my trio throws rhythmic ideas my way, really makes things come alive!
denver colorado
Hey John! Thanks for checking this one out - there's some holiday songs that just SWING and in my opinion, this is one of them! Hope you're staying warm out there in Denver this winter!
Hell yeah
Ha, thanks Sam! It's always fun to dig into these tunes with my trio. There's ample inspiration to take the music in a variety of directions. Always trying to do something new!
More please
You bet Kent! There will be more six string info coming your way soon. If there are any particulars that you want to hear about, let me know!
While you’re working out the piano part previously mentioned, keep the music flowing. It’s refreshing to hear Jazz Standards in the 21st Century played by real people and not over-embellished. Thanks. Peace.
Thanks my friend, that's greatly appreciated. I love doing these walking bass videos because they do force me to rethink the way that I'm approaching walking and look at these tunes from a variety of perspectives - from very foundational to more advanced. And YES - music played by real people! It's such an essential part of our humanity.
Man , you look like les claypool from primus
Ha, I’ll take that as a compliment- Les Claypool is awesome! Now if only I could play like Les Claypool . . .
@@chipboazmusic he is really skilful like victor wooten
I’m eager to learn 6 string bass but can’t find a systematic curriculum. Any recommendations? Thx. Peace.
YES! Glad that you're jumping into the six string, I love the instrument. Honestly, I haven't seen a curriculum that I like for it. I mean, it is an extension of the four string, but I feel like it has a lot of things specific to it. Let me know what topics you'd like to learn about - maybe I can put together some videos!
Nice simple shapes, but you need to play the B major 7 in the penultimate measure... or get the piano not to play it.
Ha, you're right on that, good catch! That's a piano error, I'll have to work that out! Thanks!
Great video! Just bought 2 10 aguilar cabs and also play electric and upright! Which do you think is better the TH or AG for both electric and upright and why? Love the comparisons
Hey Antonio, thanks for checking out the video, glad you enjoyed it! Personally, I prefer my Aguilar Tone Hammer for both electric and upright. It feels like it's got a warmth to the sound that can't be beat. I combine it with a Radial Engineering Tonebone Pedal, which not only allows me to switch easily, but also has a beautiful preamp that really sounds great with the upright. Honestly, I haven't spent a whole lot of time with the AG, so it's not a completely fair comparison. But I'm very happy with the tone on both.
Wonderful
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
😎👌🏻
Glad you enjoyed this one Ralf! I thought it would be a nice twist on the videos like this that usually focus on Walking Bass Lines. Count on seeing more of these in the future!
exactement la chaine qu'il me faut !! Merciiiiii
Fantastique ! Je suis ravie d'avoir pu aider !
I like the bassline and always love to see your videos pop up on my feed
Thanks so much my friend! I appreciate you taking the time to watch the videos! Let me know if there are any songs that you’d like to see me walk over!
Actually I’ve been looking for some inspiration for a solo over so what by Miles Davis, if you could do a vid on that that’d be amazing
@@EliasOeser-eb7sd I would LOVE to do that - I'll add it to the list, look for it in the near future!
It was also covered by one of my favorite artists, Ray Charles.
Absolutely - that’s the iconic version! I love hearing this song from anyone, but the Ray Charles version is the best. So much soul!
@@chipboazmusic right on the dot, pal!
sweet six string dude.
Thanks! I love my six string - it’s become a bigger part of my musical voice than the four string. We all have our preferences when it comes to number of string, but the six string just fits in my music!
love it! also you look a lot like nick frost, which is cool
Glad you enjoyed the video, this one was a lot of fun to put together. And I’m not going to lie to you . . . I had to look up who Nick Frost actually is. But thanks to Google, I can say, you’re right. And I’m OK with that.
I'd love to see more of these!
I could do that! I love looping on the bass and I’m still kind of working out an approach to using the technique. What I’m saying is, I do this a lot! I’ve got to start capturing more of it on film. No, I WILL start capturing more of it on film!
Thanks! I learned a lot from this clip.
Fantastic, so glad that it helped out. There’s so much that goes into playing a jazz gig . . . any gig really. It’s crazy when you think about it. If you’ve got any tips that have helped you out with your gigs, let me know!
WHY NO COMMENTS for such a great video?! Thanks for the clear comparison. I am gonna get this new gear in my arsenal!
You’re the first! Thanks for checking it out, glad you enjoyed the video. I really like the Nembrini amp sim, I think it sounds reat. In fact, I use it on a regular basis as I put my videos together. Let me know your thoughts on it - I’d love to hear what you think about it!
@ i has just purchased the bass hammer on ios. but before i had downloaded their darkglass version and was really happy with it (except the IR parts. i also had numerous guitar amp sim from them, including the rumble and the divided by 13. i think they both do well, and really sound near to the real amp (at least the divided by 13, i knew it as i owned a real one before). will dig deeper when i get back to home few weeks later. keep on going bro, your video deserves more exposure in that … shitty algorithm-ruled world
@@PK_TANG_PK Thanks my friend! Yes, I feel like they do really good work on their sims. I love the fact that you can get these sims on both Mac & iOS too - that's really useful especially since Logic is now on the iPad. Let me know what you think after you've used it for a while!
Thank you! You are helping me a lot with my bass techniques. Thank you again.
Thanks for checking out the video, I’m so glad that it’s helping out! I love putting these walking bass videos together, it’s so much fun to take a deeper look at my approach to walking and then share it with the world. If there are any tunes you’d like to hear me cover, let me know!
That is absolutely terrific! Just makes me want to practice……Dig? Yes, indeed!!!
Thanks so much - really glad that you enjoyed the video! And oh yes, I dig! There's nothing like getting that bug to practice. When I'm feeling like that, I can get going and be up all night playing bass. Time well spent in my opinion. I Dig!
Pretty Cool . . .
Thanks Steven, much appreciated! I spend a lot of time walking through tunes with long sets of changes, but there's nothing like just laying down a set of blues changes. I literally could walk on the blues all day long, so much fun!
Greetings! Is it possible to download the transcription of this bass line? Thank you very much for your videos. Best regards
Absolutely! I make these videos to help make jazz bass lines accessible to all bassists, so I would love to share the transcriptions! They don't know Steve Swallow :)
YESSS!
They don't know Steve Swallow :)
Ha, that is so true. He was a genius in the way that he played jazz on the bass guitar - from his use of the pick to his consistently tasteful lines. Such an amazing player.
For got the decay
Ha, yes, that is the missing piece of the sound! When I talk ASDR synthesis, I always include that. I find when talking to musicians about the sound of an instrument, it does muddy the point a little bit, so often exclude it. Yet bassists should know about this - especially when dealing with some effects. Maybe another video? Let me know what you think!
You should work on getting every note to ring out as a full crotchet. It would make your lines sound better.
Definitely a good idea. I tend to play somewhat percussively, but those long notes make it swing so much more. Thanks for the advice!
Have you covered any Charles mingus?
No, I haven't, but I should! Mingus was such a brilliant bass player AND a brilliant composer. Any song suggestions?
these videos are awesome thank you so much!!
Thanks so much, I'm glad that you're enjoying them! They're a blast to put together - I love walking through all these standards and making the videos gives me a chance to really take a magnifying glass to my bass lines. Fun stuff!
Bass players always seem leagues ahead in developing ideas and melodies in their solos. I can hear the hard work! keep it up.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It is hard work! There's a lot that goes into finding a solo voice on the instrument. Not everyone thinks about that process, they just hear the product - but the process is what makes it work. So thanks for noticing, it's appreciated. And I agree, bass players are pretty awesome!
Fellow upright player here and love the solo bro
Thank you my friend, that means a lot coming from a fellow upright player. It's always a blast to play with my trio and see what inspires the next solo - always lots of ideas flying around. Fun stuff!
Great walk!
Thanks Pablo! I do love a good walking bass line!
Not easy though... We need to have some muscle memory reflexes to count on... And that comes with the hours and hours of practice. Cheers!!!
Truth. We need to have put in those hours to build some trust in our playing and our abilities. Without that, it's really hard to just let go and live in the moment. It's all about being OK with where we are at musically in that moment and just working with what we've got. It's not easy, but it's essential!
Why on the 3rd chorus bar 6 you don't do di E07 but instead you stay on Eb7?
Great question Roberto! The Edim7 is unique to the melody and is generally played behind it. Once the solo cycle starts, you can stay with that chord change, but it's often nice to fall into a more traditional blues form, which is what I did here. I've heard recordings of Monk doing both with this tune, so there are options. If it's not discussed before hand, it's always good just to leave your ears open - it's easy to walk a line and figure things out as you go as three out of four chord tones are the same for both chords. That's the beauty of the blues - it's so flexible!
Always great stuff to jam Chip - this is to much fun.
Awesome! Thanks, I'm glad you liked this one. I love playing over blues, I don't think I could ever get tired of creating walking bass lines over the blues. There's just something so human in it and it's just such a core piece of jazz. This was super fun to put together - glad you're enjoying it!
Love your stuff and enthusiastically watch! I never realized the extent to which people have their on walking style until studying the very brief intro to walking basslines of some of the greats in Janek Gwizdala's book "Iconic Lines". That was a vocabulary game changer for me. Tons of ideas from the greats. I took the time to transcribe the recordings and play them in all 12 keys 🔑 rather than sight read them. It helped my writing/ transcription and gave me tons of ideas. Keep up the hard work. I appreciate it!!!
Thanks Justin, I really appreciate your support! It's so true - every jazz bassist that I've met has their own way of approaching the music. The interesting thing is that they are all coming from the same foundation and they are trying to fill the same role. It's the magic of improvised music and a reflection of who we are as human beings. A really beautiful thing. I love the work that you've put in - that's the way to really find your own voice. I think that none of us actually come from an original point, it's more the choices we've made about who influences us and what we've decided to take from each player. I could go on and on . . . thanks!
This is a fantastic lesson. The performance and the explanation of what you are trying to get across in your playing. I think this helps everyone know is practical and giggable and what is you finding a new voice and new ideas using this as a practice. Super!😊
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! There's so much that goes into creating a solid walking bass line - it seems like every time I play in this style, I'm thinking about a world of possibilities. And it all changes based on context, style, song, and more. It's really exciting - it makes me look forward to picking up the bass. I'm so glad that you connected with this!
Thanks man. Uplifted my spirit.
Glad to hear it my friend. There's nothing like some bass talk to raise that spirit - does it for me too!
Hahaha i wad waiting for you to sing
Ha, be careful what you ask for! I'll stick with the bass . . .
i think good advice denver colorado great great
Thanks John, glad the video was helpful! Over the years, I've found that there are so many things that go into every gig - from the moment you book it to the reflection that happens afterwards. I could talk about this for days, it's something I think about every time I do a gig!
