Maybe the Ancient King guy beyond the death line underwater is a reference to the James Cameron movie The Abyss, where there are aliens in the deep ocean, beyond where any human is supposed to be able to go, and they look a lot like 'angels' with wings.
I appreciate the opening being a fresh recording every video.
In earlier builds Makasgar was labeled as a student of Zalazane. So the theory of him being an outcast of sort, along with his disappearance on release of Cataclysm, does make some sense.
he was part of a class quest in vanilla - you had to defeat him and he wasnt easy even if you were at his level
This has to be the best "pointless top ten" video ever. Though, characters who seem completely pointless will normally be more interesting than they should be. After hearing Topper's story, it makes me wish Blizzard would do something for him, give him a full on quest line that enriches him where players voted for what he does and it be a fun multi-month event over the course of a year... But they're not gonna spend those kinda resources like that.
I would like that far more than the world is ending story we get most expansions.
Late in rpgs I always wish I could give npcs stuff. They live of things that cost amounts of copper. My non auction house playing Alts could feed all of westfall and not even notice. It makes me frustrated to see people that I know are not real suffering and despite the ease of which I could improve their lives I can’t. You might be concerned that they would grow reliant on me and no longer try to work but everyone knows blizzard isn’t going to program that
Currently on Grobbulus in Wrath, there is a horde guild called Dalaran Lamplighters. I occasionally see a female tauren from that guild rp walking around and lighting lamps. And that's all she does as far as I can tell. One time I saw her disappear in a beam of light! That was crazy! But I never understood why or even how she was just walking around lighting lamps. Now after learning about Windle Sparkshine it makes more sense!
I've seen this person many times. I used to follow em or tell em where lamps went out lol they'd always say I'll get to it when I do

When I saw the title of this video I instantly thought of Zalashji in Tanaris. From Classic to WotLK he's a naga standing near a cave, friendly, but no quotes or quests. And then in Cataclysm he was removed and his cave flodded or destroyed by the wave that hit Tanaris. Only his cave has a function, because it counts towards the Explore Tanaris achievement.
when you consider that this zep is how most alliance raids get into org from thunder bluff or vice versa, Tolwe also sucks at his job. 40 alliance pile onto the zeppelin. Oh look a bird.
The Orgrimmar-Thunderbluff zeppelin is one of my favorite little indulgences in the game. It's much quicker and easier to just fly or port, but I love sitting there and enjoying the sights, the music, and, of course, Tolwe's brilliant commentary.
Man, I never once noticed Wimbel in any version of Dalaran. It is amazing what little tidbits of lore can just slip by you; I love when games have worlds that actually feel lived in. As in, characters that have stories that aren't just there to be related to some quest or major lore event.
Jesus, an ageing, grieving father lighting up the city with images of his tragically dead daughter. That got to me.
I think Crend the pointless should have been a Tuskarr considering they have a culture related to fishing.

love the vid Crendor. at 12:00 theres a toy you can use called the Foxicopter you can buy for 1000 gold from a vendor in the valley of the four winds, that flys for 1 min, lets you get to see things you couldnt normally see, idk if it would work with the death line but, might be worth a try, if not maybe the zepplin or steam tonk toys
at the top of the mountain in highmountain a lone female blood elf sits in a hut, watchibg the beautiful night sky. just flew across her a few days ago and sat down next to her. go check it out crendor:)
I used to spend WAY too much time lighting the lamps in WotLK Dalaran. I was so happy when I discovered that little gnome running around; I followed him until he stopped, then found his shop. I told my guildies about it, and the next night we all went to buy wands. That's when we found he has a limited inventory.
I miss that kind of thing. No one talked about it at the time; I figured most players disregarded him as background flavor. It was an undiscovered gem the devs put there purely for the entertainment of the players. The spent all that time and energy creating the model, animating it, and programming it into the world, only to tell no one and let them find it on their own.
Those were people who just loved the game.
12:34 with this angle it looks like Ancient King is standing on back of giant body or skeleton. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the reason he's there is because he looks like effect of Guardian of Ancient Kings and game requires to have actual model somewhere in the game at all times to apply visuals on paladins casting it. And devs by mistake put it there instead of GM/dev island, because coordinates were put wrongly.
That doesn't really make sense since it was added in Legion, at the same time as they removed the summon from that spell entirely (also WoW isn't like, say, Dark Souls for example, and can handle NPCs being spawned and despawned on the fly without them needing to be hidden away somewhere)
@@killerbee.13 they still use or were using not long ago invisble bunnies for spells. So having model somewhere in the world to copy its appearance and provide effect on player when casting Guardian instead of spawning new one each time? Sounds plausible to me. And as you said - they removed summon and introduced on character effect in Legion, same time as Ancient King was added to the game.
@@Kevkoss The invisible bunnies are still around, in fact there are even some they forgot to make invisible I saw in Dragonflight in the last month. But that's a scripting thing, (the game's scripting engine can react to things that the quest objective subsystem can't, so it uses invisible bunnies to "convert" script events into mob kills, something that the quest system can handle) not an asset loading thing, and I still don't understand how it makes any sense to add a dummy mob in at the same time as they remove even the theoretical need for it. Which again, WoW's engine has never needed that specific hack, it handles entities being spawned and despawned on the fly just fine. Also, the game only loads one map file (i.e. a continent) at a time, so putting things on GM Island wouldn't work to keep assets loaded anyway, since GM Island is only on the Kalimdor map (iirc).
Edit: Wait, are you saying that the mob is there not to keep an entity model loaded, but a *spell effect*? I'm pretty sure the game uses different model data for entities and spell effects so that wouldn't work even ignoring the other bits.

According to Wowhead, the "Ancient King" NPC has a combination of Tirion Fordring and Valkier sounds linked with it, so it might have had to do with him dying during the Broken Shore event. Maybe they had plans for him to be resurrected by the Valkier and just forgot to remove their placeholder npc?
04:00 Ive experienced him in a quest that Zalazane or whatever his name was (the evil Vodoo shaman quest from Sen'jin) and there you can loot a "note" that opens up a quest that he still has an assistant, and you go kill this guy standing over there. Basically thats it.
In classic WoW if you head to the north of Deathknell to the Solliden Farmstead, go west from the tower and run tword the second set of trees parallel to the garrison tower. There’ll be glowing eyes in the bushes facing you on a blink timer. Idk kinda cool hope this finds some recognition🤷♂️

Really funny that this came out today. I was questing and was like "has crendor done a pointless top ten vehicles?" like two hours ago. personal favorite pointless vehicle is the barrel in northern highmountain that takes you down to the coast.
kindy was jaina apprentice she didn't escape theramore when the explosion goes off, later when jaina get back to theramore she see kindy standing still and when she touch her kindy turn to dust, that the moment jaina snap and become what you see in MOP, the book is really good
T'chali is beyond memorable. "I AM FOR YOU" is still a phrase I use IRL in a silly-threatening context.

Windle Sparkshine is the kind of character that imo makes games special. Sometimes you play a game and it just feels... soulless. The NPCs FEEL like NPCs rather than actual beings in a world, but with characters like him, it shows the game has soul still. Not only does he have a set routine and job but he has a small backstory despite being a character with literally 0 quests, most people probably don't even know he exists, yet the devs took the time to give him something to make him feel like a character rather than a robot.
Ancient King is an interesting NPC... Makes you wonder what was going on in the devs' heads when they made him and placed him there

The Shaman totem quests (were) amazing! Tedious, but amazing 😂 The Druid quests for your forms was also pretty neat lol
Kinndy Sparkshine was Jaina's apprentice int the novel Tides of War. She was an overall lovable and good person. If i remember correctly from the book she invites Jaina home for dinner where Jaina meets Wendle. After dinner he goes out to light toe street lamps. It is a job he has been honored with for his years of service int he kirin tor. Kinndy always loved joining her father as a kid when he lit them cos he would do it in a very pretty way. Kinndy was in Theramore when the manabomb was dropped. Jaine found her afterwards, she was still intact, like a purle statue. When Jaina touches her she shattered into dust. This was one of the tipping points that made Jaina almost drown Orgrimmar in a huge tsunami och water elementals. Wendle now lights the lamps in remembrance of his daughter.
I believe makasgar was planned to be part of the Troll's Rogue Quests somewhat like the one Undead have in Tirisfal where they need to slay the undead pathing the road from UC to Silverpine.
Okay, Windle being pointless made me extremely sad. I cried while reading Jaina's novel and absolutely love that he's got a tribute going for Kinndy.

I had no idea about the Ancient King - wowhead has a closer up screenshot of him, and he is very cool looking indeed. One thing I noticed across the video - with the exception of the No.1 spot - these are all Human's or Trolls (maybe the Ancient King is not but he looks at least humanoid), and even including No.1 they are all male......I propose a new challenge - a pointless top 10 NPC's of each race....or at least one that includes female NPC's.

#2 might be a reference to the movie The Abyss when the main character has to go down and disarm the nuke and pretty much knows he's not going back. He's effectively stuck on a ledge on the side of an underwater cliff.
That Makazgar guy... When I was like 5-6 years old in vanilla, I was swimming around out there kinda wandering around, and I bumped into him, he scared the crap outta me, I tried to swim away but he caught and killed me. Years later In wod I finally have a max level character, I think to myself "I'm gonna go get revenge on that guy", I fly down there and he's not there. Threw me for a loop, Thought I'd gone crazy. But nope, turns out he was just removed in Cata. I did finally get revenge on him in classic though, when I took him out with a lvl 6 shaman with dragonslayer/warchiefs blessing world buffs.
watcher towle is honestly one of my fav NPC's on Horde side. his dialogue always amuses me to no end.

I just did the T'chali quest last night! It was funny AF.
I thought that number one slot had a real backstory. I had heard that it was in memorial to a developers daughter or something like that
If you do an episode on funny names in the future, I highly suggest the Loamm flightmaster, Avogadro. It's a really nerdy joke (look up Avogadro's number/constant)
I once was fishing on the beach near Darkshore and was PVP, another player came up to me and tried to start a conversation but I just kept answering like a NPC, FOR TEN STRIAGHT MINUTES. Not even a role play server. Ah good times.

Most of these NPCs are indeed pointless. I've been playing since just before the start of BC, and I hadn't heard of or noticed them before except for two. And one of those two I learned about from Crendor when he made videos about the Dragonflight beta. I don't know about that fishing guy, though. It's like he's there, but not intended to be content. Like, if "non-content" were a thing, it'd be it.
A bit late to this, but just outside of stormwind if you head northwest towards burning steps just to the left in the mountain there is a gnome with like 15 sheep chilling. He has no dialogue he just sits in a small house in front of a fire place.

I'm not too sure if you read my comment from the "pointless top 10: weirdest NPCs" video but I was stoked makasgar (3:35) made it onto this NPC list, since I pointed him out in a comment. Regardless of if you read it or not, most people miss that guy because there's no reason to ever go over to where he is, not even for gathering

The troll hookah one is like the energy of Borderlands quests.
A lot of these NPCs I am wondering if they were meant to have quests associated with them but they just never got to it.

I swear during vanilla i misread Topper as Trooper and called him Tropper Mcnabb thinking he was a veteran from wc3 who ended up on the streets because stormwind treats its veterans like crap.

I really love the rando npcs that don’t serve a specific quest cuz it makes it feel like the world is actually lived in. Like not every Npc is there to center around ur character, just like irl. Just kinda doin their thing lol
