• FULL 2010 Robot Chicke...
Chris Perkins DM's another celebrity game, this time featuring the creative team that makes the Robot Chicken stop-motion show on Cartoon Network. This version is a straight splicing of all 25 episodes of the Robot Chicken DND adventure (the only one so far, maybe they'll make more later?). The DM Commentary version, and my insane Blipverted version (complete with plenty of Robot Chicken clips inserted in ironic places) are coming up soon.
Chris Perkins is forever a master at his craft
David Gallo He wrote the books for the game, so it's not surprising he knows how to run a good game.
Will Young I think it's more likely that he was able to write the books because he's able to run a good game first and foremost, not the other way around. If that makes any sense. I would love to meet a DM like Chris.
This was awesome, the back and forth about which way to go and if the should take the flamethrower was priceless. Chris Perkins is truly a master, great game.
Chris is awesome. His Dungeons rule, even more so when he writes them himself. The layouts look hand-drawn and though he said that he wrote the story, I bet he drew the layouts too. I wish I could get a game together like this.
It's a mix. The DM usually starts with a plan, and tries to keep the players on it. The players try to do everything they can to find a way around it, forcing the DM to ad lib. Some great moments are born from pure chaos :)
8:38 Information on the Melairkyn Clan and the Undermountain is found in the 3.5 Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, especially pages 180-182. 22:24 Halaster Blackcloak is also discussed on these pages, but the historic fact that the DM brings up is found on p. 270.
Thank you for putting this video up. Chris Perkins is the best DM ever. Brings me back to my childhood. Cheers
This is the closest I ever come to actually participating in a D&D game... and I'm finding it VERY appealing.
app.roll20.net/home
Play some games on this. Its pretty fun if you find the most fun people :)
DarkDweeb Duo
Cheers, dude. ;~)
Mayeur000Donz your welcome :)
DarkDweeb Duo His welcome?
Colin Finch Mostlythinkihave Guys that's my welcome...
they need to make him have his own show, and do this once a week or month :)
Just want to say thanks to you, bro, for putting these clip together. Could have cut out the beginning and ending animations between each video, but I'm not here to complain, as I couldn't have done this while keeping the high quality. Oh, and the "Blipverted" version better make me laugh my a** off!!!
I'm getting D and D. I'm starting soon. I'm loving this
Thanks :) Well, one reason I'm making three version is because I don't want the dodads I'm going to add in the Blipverted version from detracting from folks who just want to watch the show. I deleted most of the episode transitions, but the different music each time started get catchy, so I left a few bars of it in. The kids going "HURRAY!" right after something horrible happened seemed like a good idea too :)
Normally I hate live plays but this one has been entertaining for at least the first half hour. Going to give Live Plays more of a chance from now on because of this.
Especially if it's Chris Perkins running it.
Chris Perkins is awesome!
LOL! Kevin Shinick isn't alone. When we were dating, my wife asked me what I did for fun, I told her "I like to play D&D." She thought it meant "Drunk & Desperate".
Now she finds loopholes in rules to exploit and DM's once in a while.
I'm trying to save up for D&D so I can play it and I am loving this. Also, seeing people from the robot chicken crew play d&d is absolutely awesome.
Is there some some special WoTC number you call to hire Chris Perkins as a DM? He seems to be everywhere. I'm not complaining, he's great. I just wish I could play a game with him as a DM.
"You hear the flapping of wings again"
"Ohhh... no jeez..."
As a DM, you have to love that reaction. Every. Single. Time. XD
I love Chris as a DM. He is so good.
Chris: "Steel, you start your turn with one attached to you"
Steel:" yay, I'm sure I be fine"
Chris:"You get 2 points of damage"
Steel:"I'm unconcious"
Me: laughing like crazy!
That was a good bit ^_^
Back again to watch. I must watch this at least once a year x
I’m back again. Always love this video.
This was amazing! I hope they continue this sometime.
Thanks for compiling this. :)
I am trying to use these videos to learn how to play, and this is my favorite one of all of them including the Acquisitions Incorporated 2010-2012, the UK, the Press Start, Gen Con, and DND Next game sessions. I think it is mainly because of the players -- they seem to have a good time, not too serious, and the way they work (or don't work) as a team as they play. It is really fun to watch.
Got one of those red box starter sets, and this video just makes me wanna get into it so bad....uuughhhh
Played back in the late 70's and early 80's....made me smile..fun to watch.
"I brought some W9s". Omin would be so proud!
Chris really loves using Waterdeep and the Sentinel Shields and Undermountain in adventures
I wonder why.... He wrote them...
who else wants wotc to hold a contest where 5-7 people get picked to play a game DM'd by chris.
TL:DR could they possibly have shown more of his ass in this video? xD
i've watched a few acquisitions inc games and the uk one, i think this is my favorite group of players so far because they just seem to have fun no matter what and laugh about all the stupid things they do...plus we get to see a little more of the hook to get them to go to the adventure...it's nice these are here to learn how to play
I want to play DnD just for the coffee and donuts
I miss the guy with the many spoons and "butter" on the giant forehead dimple.
"Its time to churn the butter!" Pung the halfling rogue
My headphones make DMs voice sound amazing
It's called a Game Master's screen, the GM uses it to make rolls in secret.
You would want to use it to make a roll that the players should not know the out come. It is not NECESSARY, but some GMs like to keep hidden rolls, notes and monsters. It can be useful to secretly help out the players a little, say they take a large critical hit and would die, you just simply "change" the roll so they don't.
i think i like this more, even though they are the robot chicken guys they are much more relaxed and let chris do his thing, they dont try to be funy every second
It's a skill in 4th edition, Wisdom based. Where Nature works for knowing how to navigate a forest, Dungeoneering is the knowledge check for dungeons and underground living places, how they're made, and where to look for traps, etc.
It can breath fire.
What colour is it?
Green!
Tenshiyami13
GREEN FLAME!!!
i know its late but no one else said it
lol best running gag ever. Me and my younger brother use it in out D&d games
Its a trademark Dungeon Master's Screen. It's basically a foldable screen that has charts and graphs that the DM uses as a reference like if the player wants to break a door down. the DM looks at the chart there is a section that gives a difficulty for door breaking and tells the player if he succeeded. it also has stuff like fall damage, conditions like dazed or deafened, and can be used to hide the die roll and monsters. but its not necessary. I like to roll in plain view but hide the monsters
no usually you can either use a complete adventure including all maps and NPC or you can make a story up on yourself which is a looot of work you have to do before the game starts.
from the looks of the maps he is probably using a premade adventure.
I just noticed that Bluebell's mini is Drizzt Do'Urden
Chris Perkins, the boss
Another great game, great group and DM. Also Robot chicken is awesome.
Damn! I remember being a DM back in the late 70s and early 80s. So much fun playing AD&D.
It's good stuff :) But it's mostly an excuse to do something with friends ^_^
And also, chris perkins is fucking amazing dm.
I love that man’s King Ghidorah t-shirt! I salute you, good sir!
The torch, Bluebell! Use the torch to melt the ice on the door!
Avengers get the Oath of Enmity (roll twice and take either result if you attack your Oath target and no enemies are next to it) Rangers get Hunter's Quarry, which adds extra damage if they hit that target.Oath of Enmity is more powerful (double crit chance, half miss chance) but requires melee range and once you've declared it, you have to kill -that- target to reapply it. Hunter's Quarry can be placed on the nearest enemy anytime as a minor action. He might have just forgotten the Quarry.
i cant believe theyre taking that long to figure out to use the ballista to melt the ice on the door to open it
Ultimately it's determined by the DM, but the rulebooks/sourcebooks give you a guide on what sort of difficulties to set. For example, asking a guard for directions might have a difficulty of 5 (you'd have to be an idiot to fail asking that), but trying to kick a door down might have a difficulty of 15-20 depending on how solid the door is.
were basing our entire strategy on this some what sentient flamethrower ! God , i burst out laughing so much @1:30
Another resource I would check out is Major Spoilers "Critical Hit" podcast, it begins with a very detailed step-by-step walkthrough of the 4th edition mechanics as Orem Riverdorn takes his final Eladrin Wizard school exam.. and ends up turning into a truly epic quest to keep the moon from crashing into the Earth. Three years later, 1-2 hour episodes are still coming out weekly, it's like listening to a massive fantasy novel series on audiobook, for free. Also funny as hell :)
"You're choosing to do no offense?" - coming from the guy who is not helping with anything except telling them to attack a door...
Thats why you add Berserkers and a troll to make up for the "easy" creatures. better yet add a leader creature that can continuously spawn more minions and annoy the hell out of your players
45:40 Arcane ballista skill challenge -- can be commanded if you know certain dwarven phrases, deactivated or gain control (46:47, 54:42) using four arcana or thievery checks.
Rhykkers Dungeons and Drogans. Got me into 4th edition. They run a game. The DM is a good one. The players are pretty good.
The reason why a lot of people hate on 4th edition is because they are used to 3.5 which was some kind of Frankenstein's monster of broken rules. But 4th edition was much cleaner and efficient. Yet they didn't know how to work the system. So if your knew to the hobby 4th edition is much better.
You deserved it Steel Diamond...not telling the party about the circle and taking the gold
There are actually four defenses in 4th edition, standard AC (poked by pointy things) Fortitude (able to take a hammer to the stomach without flinching) Reflex (getting the @#@$ out of the way of an incoming lightning bolt) and Will (not getting sleepy at the swaying watch). When you attack, the power you use says what character stat you're employing, and what sort of weapon/implement it uses, you add up any bonus, then try to strike a particularly defense of the enemy. Thag strong, but slow.
definitely should be more of these videos...
worth the four hours. Chris Perkins is boss
25-30 HP for lvl 1 characters. However, HP is not only how much hits you can take. HP is represented as how much stamina does a char have, or how is he/she keeping his/hers composure, etc. Not necessarily hits. Like in some books you have two chars attacking each other and no-one hits the other, up until that last lucky or measured hit that finally arrives and gains one of them victory over the other.
chris I just want to say you inspire me to be a better DM and have completely made me pine to play a game but I have no players...:(
Why not try to set up a group on the ROLL20 website where you can play tabletop rpgs online? I bet you could find a nice little group willing to play :)
rachel hess I'll play! Info??
same
In 4th Edition D&D you're looking at around 25-30 hit points for 1st level characters.
Yeah, thanks for compiling.
How much HP do they all have? Just wondering. Cause right now I have no idea if something is taking off a lot of HP or not, I've never played D&D but find this enormously entertaining.
I was ten minuets in until I realized I wasn't watching penny arcade playing, but it was robot chicken. God I'm a fucking idiot
Are there any other D&D videos like this where it's both funny and entertaining?
Try Acquisitions Inc,
Like he said, look for Acquisitions Inc podcasts or watch the PAX/PAX EAST Acquisitons Inc videos. You can find them in the D&D channel, at least a few of them. Older ones are a bit harder to find. Just thought I'd specify a little more xD
ragnar97 Actually you can find all of them in one list from the begining to the end just type it in YT
Jhhhhivhhiu
Node D&D call of the wild, is absolutely hilarious it's about 12 mini half hour episodes long. Or one long one.
The face has been there 600 years but Halaster forced the dwarves out in 196. Hmmmm.
what encounter is this? I wouldn't mind running this as a one shot.
Dana Nunley 2 years late but, i think he made it just dor this encounter with these guys. made up the map, story, ect.. he does that a lot.
I work in a party that incorporates aspects of several different editions. For example Ii play an illusionist which is a 1st e race who praises Luna a 3.5 deity and for part of the time used spells like 4.e while we occasionally implement 2e things like thac0. This is how if should be played. Or at least modeled after.
He should've let the dark fire door attack slide at 42:00. Technically the DM was right but that was pretty clever on Tom's part. DM was railroading.
Chris tends to railroad in these playthroughs, I think it's because he's dealing with people of varying experience and it's a bit difficult to just leap into Sandbox RP as a noob so doesn't want to leave them out.
Yeah, railroading tends to even the playing field a little but it reduces the sporadic nature of the game which can be off-putting to noobs and veterans alike.
But it's his game so I guess I cannot judge his style.
Railroading by reminding the group there was more to the door besides ice? Yeah, Tom was creative and mindful but he forgets the fun and challenge of the game. Completely bugged me the entire match.
Jay Bond I think you misinterpreted that situation. He wasn't reminding Tom that there was a door behind the ice, he pulled out the fucking manual and slapped him in the face with terminology and grammar specifics.
Like I said, DM's in the right but he's still a little bit of a prick for being like that.
plasticbazooka can you point me in the direction of a better dm ?
Never played this game before, but does that bald guy just make up the whole story line right off the top of his head on the spot?
What am I watching and how did I get here.... looks pretty fun though.
You meet Halastar in the Hordes of the Underdark expansion for Neverwinter Nights.
Do they do it in videos like this ? Because I can't quite keep up if it's only audio. I've never played dnd, but I found this so incredible I'll have to check it out !
I grew up playing AD&D 2nd edition... 4th edition is awesome and I ding to get a group together to play again.
On a side note: D&D will teach you study skills that make school assignments seem ridiculously easy by comparison. Kids, stay in gaming.
I am borrowing the isosceles triangle question for my own campaign
extremely jealous of the first time players it would have been awesome to have chris perkins as my first dm
(edit) except for the fact they're playing 4th edition
totally skipped 4th ed went from 3.5 to 5 e and im so so so so so so glad i did.
but thank you cause i knew something was off but i couldnt pick it! they were swimming in the filth of 4th XD
Lol. I know it was 'fudged' a little bit, but a warforged crossed with the help of regular rope? Ah the power of a DM rofl.
Question- regarding a hit/miss, is it dependent on the enemy or weapon used? Say you want to hit with a greatsword and you needed a roll of 15. Would you still need a roll of 15 to hit with a ranged? I've heard of people using different requirements.
Oh of course never on the first day. I was just explainig how to properly use minions. but let me tell ya the most epic battle ive ever dmd for had 4 berserkers a necromancer leader a bunch of minion zombies that we completely lost count on how many were summoned. it was somewhere between 16 to 25. and the coup de grace, a sleeping black dragon that was zombifyde. the party consisted of 1 dragonborn paladin an elf ranger, an eladrin avenger, and a human weaponmaster all level 4. it was epic
Thanks for the tip. I think I get the idea, but I would really like to be the DM because I have a good plotline in mind so I will have to practice and have a good idea of all the checks and the combat rules. Watching this helps, but it would be nice if there was some more detailed explanation. Wizards of the Coast should consider doing more of that to attract more new players.
it will be great to start a series with random players and chris perkins as DM . think about it !!!!
beginner question: how is every success defined?
is it written somewhere in the questbooks, does the DM determine which score you have to roll or is it a standard rule, like: success everytime you gain 14 or higher?
Had so much fun watching this. They had me LMAO.
I'm working on a Full version of Press Start right now, should be out in a day or two :)
I don't think so. I believe that Armor Class or Fort/Reflex/whatever is the same vs. any kind of attack.
4th edition. Or it could be made by someone who got paid for ease of play. I have always used cards. Tier based loot. I roll (as dm) a d20. That d20 plus information from the room, like if it is just a standard room or if its like a dragons horde room, to decide which loot pool to draw a card from. Or spells and abilities. Or important names my characters would remember. Its just a note taking system. But simple.
Match dot parchment. brilliant.
Gotcha. Thank you so much.x3 I'm reading the handbooks and what not, but I find it just a tad confusing at times, and my mind finds it hard to stay on track at times lol.
Wait, he's a ranger? Why does he not swear oath of enmity?
my sound s very whispy, is there a higher sound quality video somewhere? 4 hours of that may give me a headache xD
Where can I get a DM like Chris? Or just have him DM my games? I've seen several videos of him DMing and he just does a fantastic job every time!
What's the open box thing the dm has infront of him?
Still at the beginning and im hoping for a Beholder
Love this video!!!!!!!!
whats the show theyre talking about at the end? is it happening
17:24 Even a novice sees the problem with Perception checks: "I never noticed that, until I rolled."
Those are some nice chairs
What's on all the different cards each player has?
Where can you get those maps at? I really want to get some maps for my friends and me to play on. Will be a lot better for visuals when I DM.
"Put ze kendle beck!" hahahaha
Did they ever continue this in video?
Create a character with the official character builder, you have to subscribe to use it though.
