    Let us know what you find challenging when it comes to feeding yourself or your family at home!! For me... the worst thing ever is when a shipment of food is spoiled by rats... especially when we have waiting on it for months and months!!! Thanks so much for watching and being a part of our island fam!! J & K 🐟🤿🧜🏼‍♀

    The size of that tuna is insane! How many people will that feed? Do you manage to store fish for a few days? Feeding a family is definitely tricky! For us living on the road in the van full time with the kids it’s tricky to store a lot of stuff so we have to find shops pretty regularly. We buy a stock of dried foods, fruits and nuts and canned foods but like you say with kids, we like to eat as much fresh stuff as possible. Meat is a treat (just once a week) and we try to find local markets or more often locals selling fruit and veggies by the side of the road where possible! Definitely easier now the summer months are here! Ps. I love that filly can tell it’s a girl from the roe. You just can’t teach this stuff, life experience 💪🏽

      Massive fish hey!!!! Yeah we fillet it down and vacuum seal portions to keep in the cold rooms at 3-4 degrees. But that amount of fish lasts quite some time if we kept just for resort guests (staff use up all the remaining bits of a fish like this so literally nothing is wasted). It must be so difficult not having cold storage. Working with things like dried legumes etc would be hard too not having powerful enough cooking appliances? I think fresh is best and whenever I can get in some variety I’m so happy. How good is Filly with her comments. It really is a lifestyle that brings soooooo many life lessons organically (the best use of that word in this day haha)

    Gosh, it's great to see how things have changed at Uepi. No internet when I was there LOL. There was no shop at Seghe either; most bulk supplies came to Uepi on the boat Liofai from Honiara. I remember seeing it come round the headland with the biggest list and I couldn't believe it didn't sink! 😂 Do you still get the local gnali nuts? And crabs? In my younger married life when I had young children like you I lived in Indonesian Borneo for four years. We had a commissary that was a touch bigger than your Seghe store. Pasta was often full of weevils so I would always make my own pasta and even bought an Italian spaghetti extruder! Of course, the flour would always have to be sifted first because of possible weevils. We could also get to local town markets by car there so, although remote, we were not as remote as Uepi. Occasional flights to Singapore were relished; we would buy and carry back to Borneo as many delicacies as we could! Mostly cheeses, cream, butter, and milk.! Dairy in Borneo was mostly the Long Life kind and my kids would love getting REAL milk for their cereal!
    BTW, is Clement still at Seghe?

      Yes things have advanced somewhat even in the decade I’ve been here now (Katie) .. we still get perished goods, weevils, mouldy food and sometimes rats spoil a lot of our shipments that come from Australia which is so heartbreaking when you wait months on end for it. We have been trying to move things through quickly as it’s mostly at ports it gets infested with bugs or ants or destroyed by rats. Crazy hey. We still use the bulk shops in Honiara (often sent on passenger ferry as freight or on a chartered ship) for a lot of items, our perishables are all sent by airfreight and still mostly long life / UHT. We do get gnali nuts but they’re seasonal so usually have the roasted tubs of them for 3 months of the year. Loads of mudcrab and crayfish too. This video wasn’t exhaustive but yes a lot is much the same as it probably was many years ago. But we are far more specific now with what we get and there’s many moving parts 😊 I love hearing of your experience in Borneo. I think there’s something so special about raising children in unique settings. I love that our children know what fish roe is.

    Hi, nice video again :) Thank you.
    We are just curious why when you have a resort are not having some kind of animal farm on this island? For chickens let say or rabbits or .. whatever will live there :)
    This way you gonna have more types of protein sources not only fish, right?

    • @TheIslandLifeofUs
      @TheIslandLifeofUs  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed it!! We are very conscious of protecting the native wildlife here not only in the water but also on land... we have beautiful birds and reptiles here and being so remote on the outer barrier reef islands we hope to preserve a natural environment as much as possible.. We have supported a small local business nearby to our island with a chicken farm and they supply us with chickens and eggs which is also a great reliable source of protein which we didn't cover in this video. This is a great set up so that we don't have the disturbance of chickens on the island :)

    Jase mentioned that people are disconnected from their food. Honestly, in a modern, globalized economy it's hard for it to be any other way. Most plant based foods are commodified, we have no idea where they come from. The farm 30min away or halfway across the planet it's all the same. The situation with meats is even worse. I'm not sure that they could sell meat if people understood how slaughterhouses worked viscerally. Sadly, what's a triumph of modern logistics and economics, is a disaster for the planet.
    Recipes are always appreciated.

      Ohh completely agree with your first statement there. The food industry doesn’t afford everyone the privilege of choosing organic / wholesome or even fresh - we do of course realise the disparities that exist. I watched a very interested documentary about the plant based food industry and the shifts to target lower socioeconomic demographics as a means to food security. Interesting stuff for sure. We tend not to eat seafood when we’re away from home and can’t be sure of the source.. we are also so spoilt for the best seafood right here so why would we but I mean to highlight, there’s incredible local options elsewhere we like to support that if we can.
      I’m so happy to hear you enjoy the recipes!
