- Even if you're perfectly happy with the way you knit, I encourage you to give this video a looksie. Portuguese knitting is kind of mind-blowing, and the resulting stitches are identical to Continental/English/American knitting, which means you can work a row of Portuguese knitting or purling in your current project, if you like.
The needles I'm using for demonstration are Knitter's Pride Bamboo DPNs.
The pink yarn I'm using is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky, in color Crush.
The nail polish I'm wearing is by Julep, color "Janie":

Staci - I am so glad you did this style of knitting - I knit Eastern European style and people tell me I knit wrong - you are showing people there is no "wrong" way to knit just different styles that end up with the same beautiful results and you can choose which is easiest for you
You need new knitting friends if they are telling you you're doing it wrong. My brain loves a new challenge.

I knit English style too, and am faster than several of my continental knitting friends. I tend to use portuguese for my purl rows, because it gives my hands a rest - an important thing now that I'm getting older!!! LOL Knit the way you like, and don't listen to anyone else!
Which is best to add cats bats n other complexr drawings then straps black n white to a sweater?
My father's family is from Portugal and originally I wanted to try this style of knitting as a way to reconnect with my heritage and learn something new. But OH MY GOD I think I just re-discovered knitting. This is SO much easier and less stressful on my hands and wrists. This is going to be my primary style of knitting moving forward! Thank you for the very clear and easy to follow tutorial. It's still incredibly helpful, nearly 6 years later.
I took what was advertised as a beginning Portuguese knitting class and left it confused and dejected. More than half the people in the class already knew Portuguese, so the instructor flew through this in a few minutes (standing at the front of the room), then dove into one-on-one fair isle and intarsia instruction, which took up the rest of the class time. Your video has been more far more instructive and helpful than that in-person class.
So, for anyone who has doubts, yes, you can learn from a video, especially when it has such a good instructor as Staci.
As somebody with a lot of health problems I find this method way easier and less tiring than any other.
I am experiencing it right now. Heard its less stressful.
I’m extremely new to knitting. 2 days in and your teaching method is amazing. I started with the English style and my hands were about to fall off. The pain was too much in my joints. This method is amazing. You’re a wonderful teacher. I knew you would be wonderful when you put your glasses on 😂😂. I was like yeah this lady knows what she’s doing ❤️❤️❤️
This style of knitting is similar to the Greek way of knitting, putting the yarn around the back of the neck 🧶.Love from Greece!
So glad to see this here! I am portuguese and of course, I learned to knit in this style. And yes it can be quite mesmerizing :)
Also, the purl stitch in this style is very good for people who have carpel tunnel syndrom, because it isn't so stressful for the hands.

Naná Oliveira I am also Portuguese and learned that way. When I am in a class to learn a project it is always a challenge to the teacher because my style is different than hers. I tried to learn continental but it feels weird! I am keeping my Portuguese knitting style :)
My grandmother taught me to knit as a very young child. She was insistent that I hold my needles “correctly”from the start and instilled in me that it was sloppy to work in a way that does not allow you to control tension and speed. This made it more difficult in the beginning but was I suppose easier than adapting a poor style and then having to relearn
Although I know there is no correct way it pains me to see people knitting in an unergonomic way and 60 years later although I am constantly learning new sewing, crochet and knitting techniques I generally cannot bring myself to learn a new style of knitting. However 5his one I just might…..
By the way IMO you have the best knitting tutorials on you tube. Simple, engaging and you get to the point quickly and efficiently. I have learnt a lot from you. Thankyou
Just learning to knit and haven’t found my groove yet. Every time I pick up my needles I end up holding them differently due to watching different videos and trying to learn. This way looks so much easier. I have arthritis and so far my hands don’t hurt but I’m sure it’s because I’m so slow. I’m going to give this a try!
I'm so very happy with this video! My grandmother is Portuguese, and she knits exactly like this, but she does it so fast that I've never had the chance to learn how to do it.

I've always found it so weird how in all of the knitting videos i saw they would always knit in a "weird way" and i just found out theres a lot of different styles...

I learned to knit when I was about 8 years old, from a grand aunt that came to stay a few weeks with us, I believe she thought me only the purl stitch at that time and she would pass the yarn over her neck. After that years have passed when I got to knit again. And now I picked up the habit again (40 years later...). So purling was OK since I do it (as I just found out it was a style) Portuguese way, but knit was kind of tricky so watching many tutorials (mostly continental and English styles) I kind of adapted myself to passing the yarn over my neck as usual but then instead of leaving the yarn in the front I hold it with my left hand in the back of the work and knit as usual. Works like magic and it's really fast, almost as fast as purling. By the way I'm originally from Brazil which explains my aunt showing me the Portuguese style.
I just have to say, I think you're the best on youtube as far as instructions on knitting goes! I pretty much have learned to knit because of your videos! I don't think I'd ever learn how to do socks without your videos. 😀
Your teaching style is so natural and articulate. Such a wonderful format and you have THE best close up camera person. I have been knitting and crocheting since I was about 9 or 10 but have learned so much from your videos. Thank you for being here. Stay awesome : )

My mother taught me this style (we're Portuguese) and I never knew it was actually called "Portuguese style" knitting. I couldn't for the life of me remember how to do the "knit" part, so thank you for reminding me! Can't wait to tell my Mom about this!

Возможно Португальский стиль вязания только в мире так называют. Я тоже учился вязать по стандартному способу, который в России люди изучают с ранних лет и для нас это обычный способ. Где-то это называют continental knitting.
Just a tip - instead of wrapping around your neck (and finding that your knitting keeps getting closer), use a portuguese yarn pin, thread the yarn through it - tension with your right middle finger (as you showed) and keep your yarn on a freely turning spindle. You'll find that your tension stays even, your knitting doesn't keep getting closer, and you don't have to adjust so often :) Love Portuguese style!
Portuguese style is the fastest? Which is best to do complex sweaters with drawings of cats, bats, stars, black and white stripes?

I've used Portuguese style knitting for the last 3 months. Cannot believe how easy it is and was surprised that my knitting stitches improved (so even) and with that my gauge improved also. Give Portuguese style knitting a try ladies.
This method is so good, thank you! As a crocheter with a few years experience, I was trying to learn Continental but I just couldn't hold the yarn down to pull the loop through, it kept slipping. I tried English "throwing" and found it easy (I knit one scarf in this style as a child, so my hands remembered it a bit), but clunky with all that movement in the right hand and having to let go of the R needle. This is a perfect middle-ground for me, where I can do those small movements with my nimble thumb, and hold the yarn securely to pull loops through! Alternating knit and purl in this style is a breeze, too!
a great way to keep the yarn from getting too tense between your fingers, add a second finger to it, so your index and pinkie fingers are holding the yarn in place, if that is how you normally hold it! love this!
I knit continental , but tension my yarn portugese style. Love it!!! It gives me speed and relieves tension in my hands.
I knit Continental as well and may try to tension this way… I am digging the Portuguese purling !
Now you need to show us how to perform k2tbl, p2tbl, double decreases, yo (purlwise and knitwise)ssk, and other tricky techniques which might be done slightly differently in the Portuguese style.

I've just tried this for the first time. I grew up an English knitter, taught myself continental and am now embracing Portuguese. I do love learning all the different styles of knitting but don't know if I will ever be a successful flicker. Lol. Thank you for all these wonderful videos. In the last few weeks I have learnt so many alternative stitches....and have passed on your site to many knitting friends.
I'm Portuguese (Azorean) and bought a book called Portuguese Knitting by Rosa Pomar. It's beautiful. Trying some socks with picot edging. Glad I watched this video. It will help.
You are the most amazing knitter ever in the history of knitdom. I don't know how you do all those complicated stitches and cast ons.
WOW ok this explains why I kept making so many mistakes and my mother couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong to help me! Turns out I was following continental knitting tutorials and mimicking her and my grandmother... but we are portuguese 😂 so my knit was a mess of different knitting and tensions all over!
I started knitting Portuguese style about 6 months ago and it is wonderful. I broke my wrist about 20 years ago so English style knitting was just too painful. I have had very good results with this style and I am making all kinds of things like hats, scarves, baby blankets, etc. Great video. I am so glad that this style of knitting is getting more attention.
l LOVE this style, thanks so much for sharing it. l was having pain issues that made me cut way back on my knitting to the point of almost giving it up completely. A friend told me about seeing this 'weird style of knitting with the yarn around your neck'. LOL Once l figured out what she meant l came straight to you! So far l've made a couple of reader's wraps (pocket shawls) and several mesh scarves for summer. Due to my fibromyalgia etc, l couldn't tolerate the yarn around my neck so l wear a leather cord necklace with a lobster claw clip for holding the yarn and l place the yarn around my left hand finger so my right hand doesn't have to do much. Too much info, but l am just so excited to be knitting again!! You gave me back my life long hobby.
This finally makes sense. I have tried to follow other videos, but this is the best one demonstrating this technique, IMO.
I've only been knitting for about 2 years and you make it so easy to learn new ways.
It took me a while to figure out the knit stitch but I got it! I knit English but this is much easier to switch to than continental. Purling is so fast too! The only thing I can’t do is hold the yarn tension in my right hand. I kind of do it with my left hand but hopefully with more practice it will become more natural. Thanks!
Gosh, I'm so glad I came across your channel today. I have hypermobility in my hands due to Ehlers-Danlos, and it made me give up knitting and crochet due to the sheer pain of it. In missing the craft, I have started looking into different ways people do fibercraft and needleworks, and your video here has given me hope. The moment you flicked the yarn with your thumb, I went "whaaaaaaat?" how cool!
Oh my god! You're a life saver. I learned how to knit like this from my Grandma back in Romania when I was a kid. Trying to get back into knitting has been such a pain because all the tutorials use other techniques . I tried following some of the other ones but they feel so awkward but I felt like I HAD to learn in that way. I would have given up had I not purchased so much yarn already! So glad to learn i wasn't doing it "wrong" :)
I use a carabiner clip hooked to my shirt. It works like the pin but doesn’t leave holes in your clothes. Also in summer I wear very light weight shirts and the pulling on the pin causes larger holes. My Dr who treated my for carpal tunnel researched the various knitting tec and he said this was the lest stress on the hands and wrists. Which is why I knit this way today
I’m Portuguese. I learned to knit with my mom when I was very young. She only knew purl stitch and casting on, but I loved just knitting for hours without a goal, just the automated gestures were so calming… but it meant I didn’t follow through with knitting (because all I could do were “scarves”, more rectangles, that I couldn’t even cast off).
When, decades later, I wanted to get back on it by watching tutorials (in English) I was so confused why nobody was putting the yarn behind their necks! When purling I instinctively threw it around my neck 😅
It took me a while to realise there are so many not only stitches and techniques to learn, but also all these different styles!

As a seasoned crocheter knitting always was frustrating and never worked out. I tried English and continental, watched so many tutorials, my aunts helping me and I always ended up angry and disappointed, throwing my knitting needles in a corner and a bowl of yarn in knots. I have now, for the first time in my life, knit 3 rows without dropping one stitch. You can not believe how happy I am to have found this tutorial. Thank you so so very very much!

How would you use this style for crochet?
Thanks to this technique I finally finished a project that had been a wip for over a year due to moss stitch being tedious because my tension is quite erratic. This technique totally solved it and sped it up tenfold. When switching between knit and purl I can still keep everything even and tidy. Thankyou!
Lol loved it, I'm Portuguese and I've Knitted this way for years, I'm also a thrower. I actually ordered a few pins to use, instead of the yarn around the neck. I absolutely love your teachings, I believe I've probably seen all you're videos at least twice...I love you're opening music, just makes me happy and for some reason I think of Betwiched, you may not be familiar with that show from yesteryear lol...all the best

Thanks for your video! It's so fun! It's like "Look how portuguese knit!", I almost feel like an extraterrestrial :O I'm portuguese and I learned to knit this way. I use a pin to hold the yarn - for me it's the best way to control tension. And yes, purling is very easy for us, portuguese knitters :) Although this might be good for your hands, it's not so good for your cervical spine... believe me ;)
I love love love ALL of your videos. I taught myself to knit by watching videos. I have to say you are the best. I learn so much from your videos. I just watched this video three times and am trying it on my grandchild's blanket. It is going slow but I'm sure I'll get better. It's definitely better than the other way! Thank you.

Thank you so much for this. I recently tried to learn this style from another video and just couldn't get it down. Watched your explanation once and now I can totally do it. I am actually loving it for "knitting backwards" - knit stitch on the back side without turning my work - the yarn it in the perfect place. Works great for the mitered square sock blanket that I am working on. No more turning on those tiny rows.

And you're right, the purl stitch is easier in this method, and was the only one that i learned at that time.
In these last seven years I found that there are different ways of knitting. It was hard getting used to the knitt stitch, I had to make some adjustments, but always with the yarn around the neck and finger. :-)

That is so cool! It looks a bit rough on the carpal tunnels for those of us who already have the syndrome. I love the way you explain things. I learn something from every one of your videos that I watch. That yarn over the neck absolutely floats my boat.
I knit English style and have been getting a bump on my tight index finger after 4 years of knitting so started looking for an alternate method. I like continental knitting, but not purling. I think this Portuguese way will be the one for me! Thank you for the tutorial, I figured it out myself but didn’t get the tension right- the yarn ring did the trick!

I was almost hipnotized with the way of knit the knitting stitches LOL, I practiced it a long time ago and really enjoyed the purling, I only felt a little uncomfortable with the yarn in the back of my neck, but it was good to learn a knew way to enjoy knitting.

OMG, this is incredibly easy. I learned how to knit Continental then Russian & I thought Russian was easy but this Portuguese knitting is wonderful. It is so awesome that you've put these videos out Staci. I've been doing Portuguese Knitting off and on for about a year now and it's gradually become my primary method of knitting.
I definitely have the issue of having too much tension and pulling the work closer and closer. I've found that I can sometimes just leave the yarn inside my project bag, cinch the project bag at the top and that seems to provide good, steady tension that is not quite as tight and so less prone to the push-me-pull-you problem. This is based on using a center pull ball.

I was finding this so so frustrating and failing to learn from any videos. Then I found yours, and it was still frustrating ha. Then something clicked, I could do it, amazing. I understood from the beginning from your video but my hands didn’t want to play ball. Now this is the fastest way I have found I can knit. Thanks very much, very nicely done videos.
Thank you for this video! There are very few video tutorials showcasing this way. This is my primary style of knitting. I absolutely love it! When I began teaching myself how to knit, I tried English and continental which didn't work out very well. Throwing in the facts of being a tight left handed knitter with tension issues and fibromyalgia. Equaled a very unpleasant experience. Until I saw a brief video of Andrea Wong, purchased her DVDs and fell in love!
I use to "armpit knit" and saw a video of little elderly ladies from Norway I believe knit the same way! They knitted so fast, I don't think I've ever seen someone knit that fast before lol. I've seen the Portuguese style with the clip. Totally cool :)

Thank you so much for this video! I learnt how to knit from my grandma back in Greece right before I moved to Sweden. However, I only learn the purl stitch before I left. Once in Sweden I tried to come up with a way to do the knit stitch with the help of a friend who is a continental knitter. We came up with a weird way to do it that though it works, is no where near as easy as this!! I didn't even know my way of knitting had a name :P

imagine being portuguese and finding there's a portugueses knitting style from a youtube video. this explains why i don't understand a single stitch when I watch my mother or grandma do it. I learn it from the internet, continental style.

After watching your "Flicking" video, I now knit kind of a combination English/Flicking style. (stitches held & worked close to the needle tips and sorta flick/throw the yarn from my right fingertip without letting go of the right needle) It has really increased my knitting speed!
And I'm one of the minority of knitters who has always enjoyed purling. It just feels like a more natural and smooth motion to me, and flicking made it even more so. But this Portuguese style looks like it has the potential to be even easier/faster!
