They never went in the building and found him dead. The only time they got in the building was at the begging of the firefight two members of the gang entered through the front door and were met with alejo looking straight at them. With a shot gun.

The original Zetas wave got mostly wiped out because they were too aggressive with so many other cartels, and not that skilled at aligning with corrupt federal officials. They certainly started out extra brutal though, they were trained at a US military installation called 'The School of the Americas', which is infamous for training such men as Manuel Noriega and other anticommunist paramilitary forces throughout the 20th century and even today. The Zetas were created to be an elite anti-cartel task force, but when they had received their training and equipment, they pulled a classic heel turn and set up shop for themselves, with the knowledge of cryptographic transmission and improvised electronic communication and eavesdropping (cartel cell phone microtransmitters dot a great number of topographically ideal locations on hilltops and such across Mexico and the southwest USA!), IED creation with C4 and Semtex, and nightvision and composite ceramic body armor. That first wave of Zetas was pure nightmare fuel. But a few hundreds of original elites got ground down trying to fight literally endless numbers of rival cartel figures, and the brutal back and forth frequently showed up with ditches filled with human heads.

Well to be absolutely fair, maybe not that good. The guy was a hunter, not a guy who's trained in tactics and military weapons. Meaning he had a lot of experience with bolt action hunting rifles (which basically were used as sniper rifles in this situation). His familiarity and experience with said guns are what allowed him to take precise shots under pressure. And quite frankly you could have replaced him with a "military trained" shooter and there's still a good chance they would not have faired better than he did. I'd take a lifelong hunter with his trusty rifle/shotgun to watch my back in a shoot out over a cop or a standard military service member with an M4/AR any day. However, where advanced tactics would have helped him, would have been to use his scoped rifles out in the woods at further distances rather than holing himself where he could eventually be surrounded. But the man was prepared to die that day and I'm sure he knew beforehand he probably wasn't going to make it out alive when he chose to stay inside of his ranch.

What an absolute madlad, may his soul rest ever peacefully for he fought hard in life against one of the most evil forces in the modern world and he stood up to them because he believed in right and wrong and showed that you have a duty to stand up to evil wherever you may encounter it. Rest in peace Alejo Garza Tamez. You were a warrior and embodied the quote
"Through taking action a man becomes a hero
Through death a man becomes a legend
Through time a legend becomes a myth
And through hearing s myth a man becomes a man takes action."

What an unsung hero! He probably won't get a statue though. Who knows how many lives he saved between protecting his workers, shooting criminals, and preventing his ranch from becoming a drug lab and cartel base.
