  • A hostage crisis in which the media were more involved than the police. But was what they were doing criminal?
"The Gladbeck hostage crisis (known in Germany as the Gladbeck hostage drama) was a hostage-taking crisis that happened in August 1988 after an armed bank raid in Gladbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. Two men with prior criminal records, Dieter Degowski and Hans-Jürgen Rösner, went on the run for two days through Germany and the Netherlands.
On 18 August 1988 the hostage situation was put to an end in a police operation on the A3 motorway. Three people were killed during this crisis - two teenage hostages and a policeman involved in a vehicle crash. The whole episode became a media circus in Germany and the Netherlands."

This isn't the first time german media fucked with a hostage situation. During the Munich Olympics attack, the german media showed the hostage rescue attempt happening live, giving the hostage takers information on the exact movement of the involved officers, ultimately costing the hostages their lives. These are the consequences of valuing a "good story" over human lives.

Alexander Strickland it's a thing, the term is "beihilfe zum mord". it's 3-15 years - prison sentences are generally much lighter in germany and several other european countries than they are in the US. what's called a life sentence here is normally 15 years, unless the criminal is expected or determined to be too dangerous to release after this time. apparently rösner is one of those people - seems like a good call to me.

It's perfectly reasonable to use the term "beautiful" in an entirely innocent manner, and that's exactly how I was using it.

The police were on the scene since the car was bugged but chose not to act because they thought the criminals would let the hostages free later anyways.
Let me reiterate. The car was parked. In a parking lot. With the 2 hostages. The police was present. The 2 criminals weren't present, they were in a store buying food or gas, I don't remember. And the police waited.
