My favorite thing about this fight is the story that they were able to tell with it: If you fight Dark Link without relying on alternative weapons, he'll keep mirroring your moves, and the best way to get around it is to NOT use Z-targeting and just attack in his direction: the exact opposite of how the game's combat has been encouraging you to do. It conveys the notion that in order to "conquer himself", Link had to essentially stop being himself and abandon his usual combat tactics in favor of wild but unpredictable offense. And Nintendo never needed to have Navi explain this; the GAMEPLAY told the story. This game is truly a masterpiece.
I fought him without alternate weapons. I had to time my attacks. There was a SMALL window when you could delivery a hit after matching swings with him.

They seriously need to bring Dark Link back, he's a great opponent to fight. Either make him a sub-boss again or a main boss for a temple. Hell i wont mind if he's one of those enemies that you meet throughout the game where he's a bit weak at first but he comes back later in the game and he's stronger each time. Just bring him back plz!
They should have brought him back as the Boss Key Guard for Ganon's Tower, but have him much smarter and use actual strategies like using the Mirror Shield to deflect Magic Arrows, or have Boulders in the room for him to throw at you when you're down.

From a technical standpoint on how they achieved this. The reflections are just upside down versions of the models. Given the low number of objects in the room, they could afford for this added geometry.
***** The tree, for example. They made an exact copy, but inverted version of the tree and placed it upside down, right under the normal tree. The area you walk on is an invisible layer, allowing you to see the upside down tree below the main tree, cuaing it to appear like a reflection. Same applies with all the other objects in the room. The downside of this, however, is that you effectivly need 2 times the number of objects, which is why "mirrors" are so rare in games. This particular room in the Zelda game only has a few objects (The tree, the doors, ETC) so that they could afford to creat a "mirror" effect without causing the game to bog down and lag. For Link's reflection, it is the same thing, an inverted and upside down version of the main Link model, who is programmed to mimic the same actions you do. When it comes time for the reflection to "disappear", they just remove the upside down Link model.
To everyone, if you meet Dark Link and use the zoom button to look at him, he'll just stare at you. Once about 20 seconds pass, his body will become more solid and he'll start attacking.
Always remember that Dark Link's health is equal to Link's health. So if you've got a ton of heart containers you better be prepared for a long fight. You should also try and get a good chunk of his health down when he's still translucent (sort of see-through) because he'll attack you unprovoked when he's opaque. (not see-through)

As a kid, this part of Water Temple kinda frightened me. There's just something to it, the eerieness of the room, the fact that your reflection disappears, turning around and seeing... something by the tree, only to realize it's *you* when you get closer. I feel like the idea of a reflection of yourself (as in, a reflection of you on the surface) goes really well with the theme of water. Back then, this kinda flew over my head and I was more focused on the eerie atmosphere of the area.
Honestly one of my favorite temples by design. I love the walls when moving through and pattern. The tree there where you face yourself is amazing. I imagine the library from Rosemary's Stephen king book. The entire floor is a mirror and like this level has an intrinsic meaning to self like how it's better to reflect inward for extrapolated growth. A fine distinction from it moving slightly off like life's not right, as you don't need a reflection to view self knowing yourself.
You know it’s a boss battle when you walk into a big empty square room and the door closes.. Also this is so nostalgic, miss being a kid; when life was simple without stress and worries.
This terrified me the first time I played it. I was like 12. Gaming was way different in the 90s, and if you didn't have a strategy guide or something like that you were largely in the dark about games besides the manual it came with.
I just realized Link's reflection in the water disappears after he steps on the little island with the tree, which is also where Dark Link spawns.. And the way Dark Link jumps on Link's Master Sword on 0:57 kinda reminds me of how Griffith jumped on Guts' greatsword near the beginning of the anime/manga This fight feels a lot more like a Dark Souls PvP invasion-style multiplayer fight, than a Zelda boss fight #preparetodie #gitgud
“Anything you can do, I can do better! I can do anything better than you!” “No, you can't!” “Yes, I can!” “No, you can't!” Yes, I can!” “No, you can't!” *"MEGATTON HAMMER.”*
The power of the temple took your reflection via the water and created the illusion that you were fighting yourself, notice how the room is an entire illusion and, after passing the island, your reflection disappears.
If anyone's curious, you can target him to turn his direction, untarget and turn slightly right, you can hit him with the master sword horizontal swing (right to left) almost every time.
I realize that this is a common and well-known sentiment, but what a pain in the ass this mini-boss is. This is certainly one of the toughest moments and segments in the whole game. Also, I never realized how effective the hammer and Din's fire are in this segment.

I imagine the library from Rosemary's Stephen king book. The entire floor is a mirror and like this level has an intrinsic meaning to self like how it's better to reflect inward for extrapolated growth. A fine distinction from it moving slightly off like life's not right, as you don't need a reflection to view self knowing yourself.
this fight blew my mind as a kid
When he gets more darker and has red eyes , he has gained independence and no longer needs to copy you.
Only if you use the master sword all the time
One of the coolest, most bad ass bosses in Ocarina of Time.
I'd say the entire series.
My favourite boss, to be honest, is more difficult than Ganon(dorf), especially if you don't know what to do. P.S I don't hate water temple.
RyoHawk i defeated him my first try it was super easy for me
the standing on your sword pissed me off to no end as a kid.
Those lizards, dark link, that boss from jabu jabu(i think i was called barinade), and iron knuckles are my favorite enemies in this game
The mini boss in jabu jabu was bigocto the boss was barinade
his Battle was my first EPIC sensation in my childhood in the n64 games
You know it’s a boss battle when you walk into a big empty square room and the door closes..
Also this is so nostalgic, miss being a kid; when life was simple without stress and worries.
This terrified me the first time I played it. I was like 12. Gaming was way different in the 90s, and if you didn't have a strategy guide or something like that you were largely in the dark about games besides the manual it came with.
Probably my favorite battle in the whole game along with Barinade and Ganon
I just realized Link's reflection in the water disappears after he steps on the little island with the tree, which is also where Dark Link spawns..
And the way Dark Link jumps on Link's Master Sword on 0:57 kinda reminds me of how Griffith jumped on Guts' greatsword near the beginning of the anime/manga
This fight feels a lot more like a Dark Souls PvP invasion-style multiplayer fight, than a Zelda boss fight
#preparetodie
#gitgud
It's like I'm really watching Dark Souls PvP.
"conquer yourself!"
dude, it still gives me goosebumps to this day
The way how Dark Link step on the Master Sword while avoiding the slash is simply epic
*3:42** BANISH TO THE FIERY BEYOND!!!*
Favorite boss!
Did he just jump on his sword like Griffith??
One of my favorite boss fights of all time
Yeah agreed this is my favorite boss in gaming lol the Fight is awesome as you level up dark link levels up best part of the water temple!
I love how equally matched he is with the real link
“Anything you can do, I can do better! I can do anything better than you!”
“No, you can't!”
“Yes, I can!”
“No, you can't!”
Yes, I can!”
“No, you can't!”
*"MEGATTON HAMMER.”*
When the mini boss theme kicks in... Goose bumps
1:42 best movement dark link
When I was a little kid, and I made it to this part of the game. I was literally frozen. 😐😶😳🤯. My mind was blown. The fabric of reality was unraveled . I was amazed. Life changing experience.
3:43 Epic Scream!
Without a doubt, one of zelda's most difficult fights but you kill him right away with the biggoron sword
When all else fails, several bottles of Green Potion and Din's Fire.
pro tip: when dark link starts to attack on his own, get some space between you and him and jump slash towards him until you make contact.
0:08 I never noticed until now that Link loses his reflection upon setting foot on the island... with Dark Link appearing thereafter.
