What ever happened to the Von Trapps?

  • The Sound of Music was one of the most successful musicals of all time, depicting the true story of the singing Von Trapp family, with Mary Martin playing Maria Von Trapp on Broadway, and Julie Andres playing the part in the classic film. The movie ends with the Von Trapp's crossing the Alps to escape the Nazis, who have occupied Austria. But what happened after the closing credits? We catch up with Sam Von Trapp, grandson to the original singing clan, at his place near Stowe Vermont, and hear the rest of the story

    Wow, what a great interview! The Sound of Music was one of the formative movies of my youth growing up in the 1960s, and it brings tears to my eyes to learn that the family survived and prospered after escaping the Nazis.

    Thumbs-UP #793 I am Thursday afternoon 13 February 2020! I was FINALLY offered (because I did not know it existed) the Deutsch version of The Sound Of Music, Die Trapp Familie, I believe it is titled and I now consider IT so much better. It shows them in the United States near the end. I still watch The Sound Of Music because it is fun and has Julie Andrews.

    I stayed at the Von Trapp lodge two years ago. The Stowe area is beautiful. The hotel needs updating. The curtains are ( possibly) from 1942, worn and tattered. The rooms, weather worn. Their idea of a handicapped room, bathroom is to add a seat that moves on top of the toilet. It's a bit run down for over $200 a night, with no breakfast. You're basically paying for the location and the view. The Maria pool leaked, so they kept adding freezing cold water. How can a pool be so cold in August? I would love to go back to the location. I'm not sure about the lodge.

    My father wrote the original von Trapp Family screenplay in Germany. Very successful. The rights were then sold to a US producer (I think), and that then became the Sound of Music. My father also wrote the (German) sequel, The von Trapp family in America, which was also very successful in Germany. I hope to visit Vermont this year and stay at the von Trapp lodge!

    The sound of music didn't depict the true story of the Von Trapp family. They left Austria ten years before the Nazis showed up. And also didn't 'escape' by climinbing over a mountain. Their singing instructor was a catholic priest, not a local empressario named 'Max'. It's all in Maria's book.

    • @lionsbru
      @lionsbru 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      True, much was different (a few examples come up in this interview). You are, however, mistaken on one point -- they DID, in fact, leave Austria after the Nazis came (which was many years after Maria & Georg had married, and added two children to the family), though they did not *flee*. (Georg was actually an Italian citizen -- the part of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire he had born in became, after WWI, part of Italy... though it is now part of Croatia -- so they were able to openly travel there.)
      For more, here is a very helpful telling of the REAL story. www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html
