70 MPH Storm In A Van At Mizen Head - VANLIFE IRELAND -12

As we travel along the Mizen Peninsular on the Wild Atlantic Way we find the history behind Marconi's testing in Ireland BUT we get the van scratched as we come to a halt down a narrow lane. Jane goes wild swimming ion the sea at Galley Cove and we head towards a great visit at Mizen Head where we discover dramatic cliffs. A 70 - 80 mph gusting storm keeps us up at night as we front it out at the visitor centre before visiting Dunlough Castle on the 3 Castles Head walk. We relax and set up our campervan cinema for the night whilst the storm gathers outside.

We saw so many wild swimmers. It would take me 20 minutes to get in and alot of hyperventilating and arm waving 😂 everyone else just plodded straight in without flinching. Dont know if you get used to it the more you do it. But I just cant see that. Jane ☺️
Well done Jane for the dip. Haven't braved my pool for an age. The swim is always amazing...its the taking 3 hours to get warm again that's the issue. Can't imagine trying to do that in the van.🥶🐕🚙

That seal is a Grey Seal. Much bigger than the Harbour or Common Seal. About 2x as big. You can identify them from the line of their head and snout. A Harbour Seal has a definite step down from their skull to their snout. Like a dog. A Grey Seal has a straight line from their skull to their nose. More like a horse.

Great video. Laughed when you put Band of Brothers on in Harry, that's what we did in our van. We actually went over to Bastogne in the Summer, it's well worth a visit. We visited the woods where all the foxholes were, it's very moving.

Years ago in Australia there was an elderly couple in a motor home who parked at a secluded beach. The husbands wife went for an early morning swim and her husband was looking on. Anyway she got pulled by a current away from the shoreline and her husband got worried so he ran into the water to help her only to see his wife get taken by a giant white pointer shark. The white pointer shark circled his wife only to attack her and tear her body apart which caused a huge amount of blood to spurt into the sea from his wife's torso. Her husband suffered shock and he collapsed on the sand before paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital. The authorities never located his wife's body and it was never found.
God David how awful 😱 I lived in Australia for 9 years but never swam there once (didn’t start swimming till my return back to the uk) and I have always regretted that I didn’t get to swim there, but youve just removed that regret in one message 😂. How sad 😞. Thanks for watching. Jane

Can you two believe, I've had conversations about your channel at a school , others who watch ye too,randomly came up in conversation, all positive chats. Great adventures ye were on, Mizen is near always windy, that bridge scares me crossing. Three castles is a beautiful place,only visited it for the first time last Summer. Isn’t Mizen head stunning. The view halfway across that bridge was on another level. Apparently there’s a mythical white lady who haunts the lake at Three Castles. Good job I didn’t know that while I was there 👻👻 I really loved the swimming - sure does wake the body up once you manage to get in that is lol. Yes Mizen is another world with its views, when you get over the height of the bridge ha ha. Oh sea swimming is my passion,all year round,not wetsuit,cheaper than therapy. Hi Debbie. Its so invigorating. I wish I lived near somewhere to do it back at home. I was so hooked on it. So different to pool swimming. I’d have to have a wet suit in the really cold months I think. The wild swimmers we saw were fearless and just walked straight in 😳 Tips - remember it will be fine once you are in 😂 leave your dignity on the sand and pick it up on your way out - be prepared for alot of gasping swearing and arm waving 😂. But its oh so worth it. I hope you enjoy it ☺️ Jane

the castle is definitely worth seeing and the rock formations seen from mizzen head bridge are spectacular for sure
I must admit I never realised how big the site was and nearly didn’t allow enough time. The view from the bridge and then right from the top was breathtaking.

Hi Jane and Stew, the Mizen bridge looked like a ideal spot for daredevil Jane to jump off into the water. I've had a few sleeplessness nights in the caravan in Dundee when the wind was blowing up the Tay. The scenery just keeps getting better on the west coast way. Don't worry about the scratches, they'll buff out.😂😂

Stu I am concerned about your posture in terms of long term health and the ability to keep travelling?
Is it because you are too tall for the van? Maybe you could lower your driving seat and straighten the back? It might feel awkward at first but will add years to your travelling life!

Your French friends may have had an additional reason for being at Three Castle Head. I’m not sure if you’ve come across the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder before. There’s been a podcast series and 2 television series about it. She was the wife of a famous French film director who had a holiday home near Schull. She visited Three Castle Head regularly and had been there the day she was murdered. Nobody has ever been brought to justice for it. It’s a famous case in Ireland and France.
Now I am intrigued as I hadn’t heard that story - that’s me googling for the next hour

I watch you guys every now and then. Thank you for sharing your adventures! If you are heading to Galway you can park your van on the prom in Salthill. I usually see 3 or 4 camper vans there during the day. It's not a bad spot and you can walk into downtown. Also, Silver Strand Beach is a good place for parking too. It's on the Atlantic Way not far from Salthill Prom. Your van just needs to fit under the car bar. Good luck and Happy adventures! PS. Like that gale force wind on Wed. and Thur. it was crazy!!
