  • A local expressed interest in either selling me his 1967 International Scout or hiring us out to get it back on the road for him once again. The story goes that the last time it ran it developed a miss in the engine so he parked it. Let's see if we can get this one back on the road after a short slumber in a local barn! As always, thanks for watching!

The Jeep CJ5 came out in 1954, so yes it was available in 67. The CJ3B was made alongside the CJ5 until 1968. One advantage IH had with Scouts was selling through a network of tractor and implement dealers in rural areas where there may not have been Jeep/Ford/GM dealers.

I had several binders over the years. My favorite was my 62 scout 80. The 152 with the 3 speed. The wipers were individually actuated. If you were driving uphill, forget about having wipers. Downhill they would go like hell lol. The gas tanks looked kinda like a couple of jerry cans. I loved that thing.

That piece of metal hanging out of that pickup screen looks like a wire brush bristle. My grandfather had a 82 bronco with a 351 in it. It needed a rebuild and My dad cleaned the parts with a wire brush. One of the bristles made it's way down into the pan, through the screen, jammed up the oil pump gear, sheared the pin and the truck shut off from no oil pressure.

The Scout 800 replaced the Scout 80 during 1965. The new 800 model was built from 1965 to 1968. These models had many improvements of comfort and design, including bucket seats, better instrumentation and heating systems, updated dashboard, optional rear seats, and optional 196 four-cylinder (from 1966), or 232 inline-six. Beginning in March 1967, a 266 ci V8 engine was also offered. Externally, changes were limited to an anodized aluminum grille with a rectangular "International" logo placed on the grille, the IH badge was moved to the hood, the door handles became the button type, and the tailgate no longer included the "hooks".[1] The base engine was a naturally aspirated "Comanche" 152 four-cylinder with 93 hp (69 kW), of which a turbocharged version with 111 hp (83 kW) (the 152-T) was also offered. In August 1966, the turbo version was complemented by the bigger 196 which used less fuel with exactly the same power. The 196 motor achieved 20 mpg.[2] The turbo version was discontinued during early 1968. The fold-down windshield was still available, code 16536, but few were ordered because this was not advertised. The vacuum-powered wipers were moved to the bottom of the windshield frame with the fixed windshield.
    International Harvester Scout 800 Sportop
Beginning in early 1966, International also offered the Scout 800 Sportop, which had an upgraded interior and a unique fiberglass top (also available as a convertible) with a slanted rear roof and a continental spare tire kit.[2] The "Champagne Series" Scout was an upscale model offered in the Scout 80 and later Scout 800 models that featured a headliner, door panels, and carpet.

My experience with the original IH Scout is limited to 2 vehicles about 30 years ago. They both had a knock that sounded like bottom end noise. They both turned out to be distributor gear and lower shaft bushings. Replacing the parts would only fix the noise for about the interval of a single oil change.

Those magnetic spark plug sockets are definitely a great tool. I first heard about them on Puddin's channel when he was working on the Towrolla and I believe he mentioned you had either sent him one or you had told him about them. It helped me out greatly when I was changing out spark plugs on my Scion TC since they have the built in extension since Toyota likes to put the plugs like 5 miles deep into the engine

I enjoy all your videos , Duff helps so much. When I worked for Ford back in the 1970's as a mechanic , I had a car in my stall that had an engine knock, even with a stethoscope it seeemed that the knock was in a cylinder, even my service manager and a couple other mechanics agreed, so I pulled the pan and found one rod bearing almost 1 thousands off, not really enough to
knock, I put in a new bearing and reassembled , started it up and it still knocked, what the heck, after more diagnosis, it turned out to be the fuel pump knocking and sending the knock down the block, possibly the fuel pump on the scout engine is your knock. thank you

It came with a 4 cylinder 252 engine. I got it running and it had LOW power. It has 427 Dana differentials. It still had low power so I put a Chevy 350 in it. No more low power! It would go 80 mph at 4000 rpm. Now it needs 4 new tires and a new boat gas tank. It is a worthy 4WD vehicle.

She's not a bad ol rig! Of course I'm partial 👈 You can definitely tell that the Scout influenced the Bronco, and vise versa. Apparently Duff not only likes riding around, he likes riding up and down on the lift too. 🐶 Good work Mort!

My '73 cj-5 had a lot of top end rapping that sounded like that scout. I changed all of the rockers & pivots which quieted it all down if that helps you. I had previously done the whole bottom end with HV oil pump. Gets 70,lbs oil pressure. I attribute the top end ware to low zinc in oil.

My experience with a Scout from 1980 was that when going through high water at a significant speed, the distributer tends to get wet. That tends to bring things to a quick halt. Oh, yea. When going sideways across a fairly steep hill, never turn up the hill. Always turn down the hill. If you turn up the hill? You'll end 'up' at the bottom of the hill; possibly upside down.

Quirky rig. My dad used these as teenager at sheep stations in Idaho, he swears by em. Great dog, I love Brittanys. Neighbor had one and a Field Lab the size of a Great Dane. That Brittany was always at the fence giving kisses and playing with us, she was a good girl.

Old school way of checking rod knock was with a broom stick against the block where the piston should be. Can hear and feel the vibration. Saves on busting out the tools

The beauty of the crude nature of the Internationals is that they're so dang simple to work on. Even for a novice like myself I've been enjoying learning working on my dad's 71 Scout.

Also, definitely hadn't watched the full video when I made this comment. Quite a bit of difficulty here, with the V8 crowding the engine bay and chasing that knock around. Quite a bit easier with the inline six I've been working on.

That would be the 152 cid slant four. Actually the right bank off the 304 V8. Offered 93 hp. Just crazy how they built those little rigs! Makes a guy wonder how far the old boys from back in the day would drive those Little Scouts!! Thanks for the IH content Mortske and Duff!

Had the same rig for a few years. Sweat little buggy with the top off. Once needed a hose and called the local International Truck Center for part number etc. Thought the guy would be excited when I told him I had a 1967 Scout 800. He replied, "Why?".

It’s a real shame you didn’t know that the knocking was a permanent option that came with the vehicle. Shot a lot of labor for nada. Still a great video as 100 percent of the time. Thanks for sharing brother. Big Al.

I have to agree with the found in a barn = barn find as well. Many times they aren't like the used to be though. Back in the 80's & 90's people used to pull the true barn find, an original survivor car that was put away years ago by the 1st or 2nd owner. Nowadays we are seeing these weird barn finds that were saved years ago, restored, then parked in a barn and forgotten again. How many times can a vehicle be pulled from a barn and still be a barn find I wonder? 🤔

I inherited my dad's 62 Scout in 1986 and drove it back to Minnesota from Grand Junction, Colorado in December. That was a long, cold drive. Had to replace the water pump in Nebraska, found that at the IH dealer. Slant 4 cylinder, 4 speed, awesome rig till it wasn't.

I had a 68 scout 800 all wheel drive about 15 years ago.. that critter was a tank.. never left me stuck and went every place I wanted to take it. I didn't push it on places I questioned either.. it was a good vehicle.. only issue I had was them cold winter starts.. ya better give it a squirt of happy juice to at least get it to fire.. sometimes a second shot was needed for it to run.. but a great vehicle never the less for a 196 ci 4 cyl 4 SPD. good to see one and someone working on it..

The Dana 20 twin stick was standard, 4 speeds are super rare both my 66 & 67 scout 800’s were three speeds. I’d give almost anything to have that scout I had to sell mine in 08 to save my house while I was finding a job after the economy crashed.

My Dad told my a story about buying an old Ford pickup with "rod knock". Ended up being the fuel pump arm slapping the cam eccentric because of a broken return spring in the pump. Cheap easy fix, drove the truck for a long time before trading it in on an 1979 Ford Fiesta!

I had a '64 Scout 80. It had the slant 4, 152 cid, and it was definitely underpowered. I attempted to upgrade it. I did a power steering upgrade, and that went well. I was going to install Toyota 4.10 rears and a Toyota 22r engine in it, but due to health problems, I was not able to complete it. Another Scout owner bought it for parts.
The factory rears were 4.88, so not suitable for highway driving. Mine had an all range overdrive in it, and the tallest tires that could fit under the fenders.

Hello Lord Duff and Servant Mortske I enjoyed seeing the old Scout even with all the flexihoses. I know this comment too late for you to check. I had an older GMC with a very similar knock. The problem was eventually traced to the mechanical fuel pump. There was good contact and spring pressure on the push rod. It seems that on the return stroke of the pump it was hanging momentarily causing the knock. When pump replaced the knock stopped. The knocking fuel pump still worked. If the Scout returns maybe check there to appease Lord Duff.

I checked absolutely every thing you did for that same type of noise. I was in denial. Mine was an automatic ,but the 2 flex plate bolts were found in the bottom of the cover and the torque converter bolts were loose. And in a chevy 2.8 you can get the flex plate bolts back in without pulling the motor. Righty Tighty - no more noise.

Our 62 was for snow plowing the freight yard and for my sister's college practice teaching. My baby brother and I would select an empty tank with the floor selector valve and switch the dash gauge switch to the other side (full fuel) tank. Sister Susie would run out of fuel, not understand why the gauge indicated "full", call Dad, Dad would correct the problem and scorch the daylights out of the guilty brothers. Susie was not a quick learner, so this happened a few times !!!

Yes Mortske, yielding to a train is a good idea. Last year I was on an Amtrak that hit a garbage truck in Iowa. Amazingly, the driver survived the impact, and got airlifted to Des Moines. However, having gotten off the train to render aid to the driver, I can assure you that yielding is highly advised.
